Western Hills High School Baseball Players Allegedly Sacrificed Chickens

Baseball Chicken Probe

03/31/11 02:11 PM ET   AP

BENBROOK, Texas — Police in the Dallas area are investigating whether two high school baseball players sacrificed chickens in a bid to improve their games.

Police in Benbrook, Texas, say a 15- and 16-year-old "engaged in acts that caused the death of two baby chickens. It appears that superstition relating to a slump in baseball performance could have played a part."

Western Hills High School baseball coach Bobby McIntire says he has not had a chance to talk to the students about why they did it. He told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that "baseball is very superstitious" and the idea possibly came from movies they say.

School officials say the boys have been kicked off the team.

So if you kill animals for fun in the sport of hunting, that's okay. You don't even get arrested if you are terrible at it and the animal suffers greatly. If you eat chicken at a sporting event, that's also okay. But, if you kill a chicken to improve your performance at sport, that's not okay. It seems the judeo/christian lawmakers can't handle the hint of voodoo. I guess the kids should have lit a candle...that would have done as much good as the chickens, but it would have kept them out of the hypocrites' courts.

If torture or cruelty were involved then yes, there is a difference.

Many hunters are trained to be humane in their hunting. I doubt these little punks were as kind to their prey.

there was nothing in the story that says they tortured the animals. I do not presume facts that are not in the story. There is no qualification, except for firearm safety and a license, for hunting...some hunters are good, some are not. I see the quality of work most people put out in their jobs, there is nothing that indicates they are any more careful in their recreational pursuits. I am not against hunting (although I do not believe the myth that most hunters do it for the outdoors experience rather than the killing ). If so they would be hunting with paintball guns. I am a meat eater raised around farms and know what the nature of raising and killing food animals is. I am against the idea that it's okay to kill an animal for one kind of enjoyment or religious ritual and decry it for another. The hypocrisy is clear cut.

I doubt what they did is one tenth as bad as what happens at CAFOs every day and you hardly ever hear about it. Many Americans have a knack for turning a blind eye to animal suffering.

If you are that worried about how you play maybe you should be at batting practice instead of raiding a chicken coop.
