PaidContent Names The Top Digital Media Companies

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/31/11 08:35 PM ET   Updated: 05/31/11 06:12 AM ET

Few can question the rise of digital media, but arguably just as few can tell you who's leading the pack.

But paidContent did just that, ranking the top 50 digital media companies in the U.S. based on a number of factors, namely digital sales. If the sales figures were publicly available, that's the number they used. Otherwise paidContent established a reasonable estimate based on a variety of reports.

Overall it's a pretty solid list, but check it out for yourself to decide if you think these companies are leading the way.

Perhaps most telling is how these companies generate their revenue. Of the 50 companies on the list only 13 made their money be selling subscriptions or services (notably Netflix). The other 37 generate most of their money the old-fashioned way, through ads.

On a smaller scale the one thing I have observed with alot of start ups is free services. Once they get enough traffic flowing thru the site they become Subscription based sites. Take a site like auctiva.com. I remember doing ebay several years ago, this site was absolutely free. Until their free subscriber base grew. Then they begin charging for their service. Thousands of sites do this. Its actually a smart approach to business. Many marketing and advertising sites will give you much better exposure than you local newspaper. Just my 2cents!!
