MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Afghans protesting the burning of a Koran by an obscure U.S. pastor over-ran a U.N. compound Friday and killed at least seven international staff in the deadliest-ever attack on the United Nations in Afghanistan.

Thousands of demonstrators flooded into the streets after Friday prayers and headed for the U.N. mission in usually peaceful Mazar-i-Sharif, a city considered safe enough to be in the vanguard of a crucial security transition.

The governor of Balkh province said insurgents had used the march as cover to attack the compound, in a battle that raged for hours and raised serious questions about plans to make the city a pilot for security transfer to national forces.

The confirmed dead were three international U.N. staff and four international Gurkha guards.

In New York, U.N. peacekeeping chief Alain Le Roy told reporters after briefing members of the Security Council who convened an emergency session to discuss the attack, that some of the protesters seemed to be more than demonstrators.

``Some of them were clearly armed,'' Le Roy said, adding that they appeared to have targeted the foreigners at the compound. ''We are not sure at all that the U.N. was the target.''

``Maybe they wanted to find an international target and the U.N. was the one in Mazar-i-Sharif,'' Le Roy said, adding that an investigation of the incident was in progress.

The attackers overwhelmed security guards, burned parts of the compound and climbed up blast walls to topple a guard tower. Five protesters were also killed and about 20 wounded, some after trying to take weapons off U.N. security guards.

``The insurgents have taken advantage of the situation to attack the U.N. compound,'' said Governor Ata Mohammad Noor.

He told a news conference that many in the crowd of protesters had been carrying guns. Some 27 people have already been detained over the attack, he added.

Le Roy said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's chief-of-staff, Vijay Nambiar, and head of U.N. security Gregory Starr were heading to Kabul Friday night. He added that U.N. security in Afghanistan would be reviewed.

Ban and the U.N. Security Council condemned the attack.

DEADLIEST ATTACK

The attack was one of the worst on the world body in years.

``It is the worst incident ever for U.N. staff in Afghanistan. Mazar mobs were active in the 1990s, repeatedly ransacking UN offices ... but so far as I remember, they never actually killed anyone,'' a former U.N. employee in Afghanistan told Reuters.

The worst previous attack was an insurgent assault on a Kabul guest house where U.N. staff were staying in October 2009. Five employees were killed and nine others wounded.

The two largest recent attacks on U.N. compounds in other countries are a 2007 bomb in Algiers that killed 17 U.N. staff, and a 2003 attack on the Baghdad hotel that was the U.N. headquarters there, which killed at least 22 people.

Christian preacher Terry Jones, who after international condemnation canceled a plan last year to burn copies of the Koran, supervised the burning of the book in front of about 50 people at a church in Florida on March 20, according to his website.

He told the British Broadcasting Corporation he did not feel guilty over the deaths in Mazar. ``We are not responsible for their actions,'' Jones said, when asked about the attack.

Thousands of demonstrators marched through western Herat city and about 200 in Kabul to protest the same incident, but there was no violence at either demonstration.

Long-standing anger over civilian casualties has been heightened by the Koran burning and the recent publication of gruesome photographs of the body of an unarmed Afghan teenager killed by U.S. soldiers.

'COWARDLY' ATTACK

The Afghan police and army, whom the United Nations rely on for its first line of defense, were apparently unable to control the crowd. The NATO-led coalition said German troops answered a request for help, but it was not clear when the call was made or answered.

U.N. officials in New York said earlier that as many as 20 U.N. staff may have been killed. They said later that figure had included people who turned out to be Afghan demonstrators.

An Afghan police spokesman said two of the U.N. dead were beheaded. Le Roy said no one was beheaded, although one victim's throat was cut.

The head of the mission in the city, a Russian, was injured but was now in the hospital, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. Russia called on the Afghan government and international forces to ``take all necessary measures'' to protect U.N. workers.

Romania's Foreign Ministry said preliminary information suggested a Romanian citizen was among the dead, the Norwegian U.N. mission confirmed a Norwegian was one of the dead and Sweden confirmed a Swedish man was also killed.

U.S. President Barack Obama, Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai and NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen joined condemnation of the attack. I have never heard of such an oxymoron in my life: "American soldiers endangered by words in a hostile environment."

We sent them over there to defend people from thugs.

Our military is taught to kill people & break things. Their Bibles were confiscated & burned, they are not allowed to pray or share about Jesus. If they cannot defend themselves, they need to come home & be dis-honorably discharged, or just brought home.

Terrorism, can only be dealt with terrorism. The people of Afghanistan love the terrorists or they would rise up against them...we are awaiting their response.

Denying free speech to a Bible Preacher? That's so un-American!

The Koran, supposedly give by God to Prophet Mohamed, can only be judged with the Holy Bible, 66-books written by over 40 authors...all of whom are descendants of their Father Abraham, as was Mohamed. They are equal only in that respect.

But like one Islamic speaker said this week, "The Bible is about Jesus."

I like the translation in Shakespearean English(The King's English).

The actions of the Rev. Jones does not justify the Muslim action in Afghanistan. It is simply a mob out of control. No such actions took place in America when 300 Bibles were burned in public in Afganistan. Each time a flag or bible is burned by Muslims an equal action should take place. This is the only language they understand. The wimpy and non-responsive actions to their rage just make them believe we are weak. You can be sure most Taxpayers believe it a waste of hard earned funds to occupy that country. Please get out, America cannot afford such a waste of money anymore, there is no ROI to the majority of US citizens.

It is GOOD that Jones burned the KORAN.

The Islamic mob killed men who had nothing to do
with the event the mob was allegedly provoked by.

It is GOOD the world sees that Islam/Koran

causes people to become criminally insane.

It is GOOD the world see the "TRUE criminaly insane FACE" of Islam.

So the world can know such as GWBush and Obama

and many more "big shots" who honor Islam are morally sick/perverted.

So later no one will be able to claim

"I didn't know how criminally insane Islam was."

Shall we annul freedom of speech due to fear of Islam ?

The pastor thought he was just making an evaluation--instead he incited murder.

Is there a punishment to fit this crime?

What a strange task to assign to the American Judicial System.

You give more respect to the killers than our Constitution.

General Petraeus stong condemnation of the exercise of liberty guaranteed by The United States Constitution places General Petraeus in the untenable position of strongly condemning the right to exercise liberty all while acting under his oath to defend the rights of US citizens to exercise liberty.
Since, General Petraeus condemns liberty in the strongest terms possible, then it is painfully apparent that General Petraeus has directly violated his oath and no longer acts as a member of the United States Armed Forces, but as an individual and he must be immediately restored to individual civilian status.,

General Petraeus has betrayed us...

Terrorism can only be dealt with by terrorism.

Our United States of American Military is trained to kill people & break things...that's why we pay them.

I think if they can't get the job finished, they need to come home.

It's funny how when there's a rouge Christian organization acting on his own behalf and doing despicable things people are quick to stand up and say "this person and/or organization does not represent Christian values, he/they is/are not Christian." But when a rogue Muslim organization does despicable things on it's own interpretation of the Qu'ran, all of a sudden all Muslims are evil Christian-hating heathens that should be eradicated from the face of the earth.

Funny how that double-standard works...

Well, that seems to be the difference. Because many Christians and Christian organizations have said "this person does not represent Christian values" and disowned him, but where are the Muslims and Muslim organizations saying "these killings do not represent Islam values".

Their reaction would depend upon which era of Mohammed's writings are being tweaked.

He was so much more benign toward the end of his life.

I agree completely and I am a muslim. I condemn these killings as they are not one iota in keeping with true muslim ideals.

This self-ordained pastor is no Christian. Apart from 20 poor souls in the cult, he has no following (if we discount 1000 stir-crazy reporters). No mainstream, midstream, tiny brook of a stream denomination claims him. And his actions clearly have nothing to do with what Jesus would do, say, advocate or encourage. We can certainly add his name to the hundreds of years of a fine tradition of Christian violence as a very minor footnote, but that does not legitimize him by any stretch. Nor does it make that history any more representative of the teachings of Christ than play-doh resembles the materials of a Gaudi cathedral.

His actions are despicable, and the reaction in Afghanistan represents nothing more than the cruel depth of despair in this benighted part of the world.

We see many posts claiming Jesus would do this or Jesus would do that, but if Jesus viewed Mo as a false prophet, he might actually not think too highly of his followers.
03:00 AM on 04/06/2011
Actually Mohammad would be equally disgusted with what his so called followers are doing in the name of islam.

If he submits to a supernatural force it certainly is an evil one. Christians in name, as history so richly shows us, are often not Christians in deed.

Though Christians in name are often Christians in deed too; witness the charity work around the world. And in the USA where every city has a Mission where the homeless are fed, housed etc. Whereas atheists do little charity work but purely atheist philosophy has led many states to wholesale genocide.

Such a Violent Race! The Preacher was wrong to burn the Koran! America is wrong in allowing this violent race admission to America, at this time! The hatred between the two 'religions' are too extreme! A race or religion that causes threat & danger to America must be considered our enemies. The horrific attacks & deaths of their own women & children is a crime against all humanity. Until they change their way of thinking please KEEP THEM OUT OF AMERICA! For their sake & ours. May Peace & Justice Reign on Earth! Till that time, only chaos reigns for us all. What has happened to humanity?

We need to remember that Religions are made up of Human Beings. Religions may aggregate hateful individuals, and for some justify hateful actions, however the blame rests squarely with those who carry out the hateful actions.

It's like blaming the Constitution, and hot his own stupid, willful lack of self restraint for Terry Jones' hateful actions.
11:16 AM on 04/04/2011
Terry Jones as said before he should unite those who believes as he does and fly to the middle east and begin his crusade . They can call the NUT HOUSE.

When you do something that you know ahead of time will provoke a deadly response as Terry Jones did you are unbalanced.

We know how the radical of any religion will act in the past centuries .

We know in the past radical leaders and beliefs have costed the mutilation and lives of perhaps millions of people over the last thousand years and more just because of a religious teachers who had prevailed over there followers.

Today in extreme islam we all know this wold happen including Terry so yes we invite Terry to be brave with his followers and go somewhere else to fight your crusade.

No, we need Pastors to take notice & speak the truth without compromise, like Rev. Jones.

Let's send the "Largest Entitlement Group in The History of The World" to fight for their freedom, housed in our Nation's prison system....I hear they can be very effective at-times...
10:59 AM on 04/04/2011
Terry Jones said that he burned the Qu'ran to prove that Islam is a religion of violence. Ummm...as an up-close-and-personal witness to the horrible attack on 9/11, I did not need Terry to publicly burn a Qu'ran to prove to me just how radical and dangerous this small but powerful segment of Islam can be. I think most other people also paid attention to the events of 9/11 and are now aware of this fact.

Here is why I would not publicly burn a Qu'ran: because I know that American citizens are risking their lives and opening their hearts both here and on foreign soil to try to make strides in defeating radical Islam, and my actions would surely come at the the expense of other people's lives. Why would I want to do that? To make a point that most people already agree with? Just b/c it is my "right"? I'm no lawyer but I do understand that even though some things are protected by law, common sense should prevail.

If Mr. Jones wants to conduct his own personal crusade against radical Islam, both he and his congregation should fly to the Middle East to the frontlines instead of hiding behind our military and Western laws. And he can take Westboro Baptist Church with him.
