India vs. Sri Lanka: Cricket World Cup 2011 Final Highlights (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets to win the 2011 Cricket World Cup on Saturday in Mumbai.

The victory marked India's first cricket world cup title in 28 years and followed an historic semifinal match against archrival Pakistan. India was also able to avenge its loss to Sri Lanka in the 1996 World Cup.

"It's the ultimate thing and I'm experiencing it," said Indian great Sachin Tendulkar. "I couldn't have asked for anything better. It's the proudest moment of my life."

The Guardian outlined the meaning of the victory for India, a nation of more than 1 billion people:

India was desperate for this victory; the humiliation of the Commonwealth Games corruption scandal was still fresh; the country's recent diplomatic successes – not least towards a permanent seat on the UN Security Council – has been overshadowed by fresh concerns about its aspiration to be regarded as a first world nation.

I was fortunate to be invited to a World Cup watch party held by my Indian work team mates, and it was an amazing experience. I will never forget it.

Congratulations, India!

It is especially significant that at 31 for 2, with Sehwag and Tendulkar gone very cheaply, the new generation stepped up. Due to this, this is another defining moment, like 2001 Aus in India.

AT 31 for 2, India's self-belief was severely tested, but the 'New India' stepped up, and hit a SIX!!!

This turn of events makes the victory far, far better than if Tendulkar or Sehwag had carried the day.

Loved the celebrations which start around the 14:00 min mark in the video. These last few moments will be replayed many, many times across the country. For many Indians, cricket has been *the* sport all through their lives and this World Cup, won through skill, guts, and hard work, is the culmination of a dream. The scenes of celebration in the slideshow will have been seen in thousands of cities and villages and on this one day, the country believes it is problem-free and at peace. That is how much cricket means to Indians.
