Barack Obama 2012 Campaign Announcement Expected Monday

Barack Obama 2012

First Posted: 04/03/11 11:30 AM ET Updated: 06/03/11 06:12 AM ET

President Barack Obama is expected to announce that he will run for reelection in 2012 on Monday, CNN reports.

Democratic sources tell the network that the president will alert supporters of his plans in a video sent via email or text message.

Mike Allen wrote in Saturday morning's Politico Playbook that Obama would likely make his plans known on Monday; however, officials would not confirm a specific date "in case some transcendent event in the world would overshadow the kickoff."

Obama aides want to tell their supporters first, and so are not encouraging preview stories by the press. The president's announcement will be transmitted directly to supporters through text messages, e-mail and social media, not with an appearance by Obama, the sources said.

The AP reported on Saturday:

Democratic officials familiar with the president's plans said Saturday that Obama intends to file papers as early as this coming week with the Federal Election Commission to launch his 2012 re-election campaign.
...
The officials asked not to be identified in order to speak before the papers are filed.

That widely anticipated but formal step of registering with the FEC will free Obama to start raising money for the re-election effort, which, like his 2008 campaign, will be run from Chicago.

CNN reports:

Two sources tell CNN the campaign team hopes that in total their bundlers will raise $500 million, leaving the campaign to raise another $500 million and amass a record-breaking $1 billion war chest.

Obama secured $750 million in his 2008 political operation for the White House.

For his 2012 reelection campaign, Obama's team will be based at One Prudential Plaza in the Windy City. The location sits just a few blocks away from where the president delivered his victory speech in 2008 at Grant Park.

Jim Messina, who served as deputy chief of staff to Obama for two years until last January, will be Obama's campaign manager for his operation in the next election cycle.

Obama is not expected to face a serious primary challenger for the Democratic presidential nomination. He will likely face off against one of a number of potential Republican candidates currently testing the waters in a general election match-up for the White House in 2012.

Voted for O in 2008. If we are either in Iraq, Afghanistan or Libya or some new place next year, I am staying home. There is no point.

I said that he doesn't use it TO TELL THE TRUTH, only to rationalize his capitulations to big corporate interests. He never once made a moral case for single payer or even public option....he couldn't because he had capitulated to the big insurance interests before negotiations even began. Yet, he permitted people to have a faint hope for public option. He asked people to communicate with him, yet he never answers any communications, but he invited big insurance CEOs to the White House and promised them that they wouldn't lose their power to cheat people...sure there will be more policies issued but insurance companies will still be able to wriggle out of honoring the policies, because ERISA will still not allow people who got their policies at work to sue.

Look at what he actually says in these public statements.....never any kind of moral initiative of the kind that were so easily advocated during his campaign. Those are GONE...it is all about how he is stuck and can't do anything because of his circumstances. Apparently, nobody ever told him that a real leader uses the bully pulpit to advocate for the public good, not to try to weasel out of abandonning the public good in order to keep corporate support.

Take a look at the people he chose for his administration....not one single one who knows how to achieve any positive changes, if, indeed, they wanted any changes, which clearly they don't. Rahm Emanuel, indeed.

It does not matter now.

Even now the president and his people are expecting him the wave of support to carry him through the election.  And it probably will.  Most people are not going to criticize their guy.  You saw it with President GW Bush and you are seeing it now.  No matter how much he is screwing up he is still their guy and they have to support him.

I don't think there is a list of words, but rather personal attacks that are frowned upon. The slimy Limbaughbots get around this by criticizing all liberals and calling them the usual silly names, , and it seem unfair not to be able to retailiate by calling them "dolts" or something like that.

And I hope that people who sat on their cans waiting for hope and change will continue to support people who have brought us nothing but greed and fraud will continue to do so. Seems that the public needs a more dramatic lesson of right wing governance before they realize that hope and change takes citizen participation and advocacy and not posting in pajamas to move the country forward. Nice try though.

Abraham Lincoln led the North to victory and slavery was ended.

Of course the party has changed a bit since then

The election of Abraham Lincoln precipitated the blo_odiest w_ar in our history. Perhaps a less controversial leader could have talked the South down...and avoided this very difficult conflict...even the first Republican president brought war and suffering to this country albeit for a noble cause...the more recent Republican presidents love wars that are meaningless. Ask any one who lives in Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Maine, New Jersey and now Pennsylvania if they are sorry they elected GOP governors and the unqualified answer is yes...polls indicate that the GOP governors could not be elected today. I believe buyers remorse will lead to a big loss for the GOP in 2012.

uhm...wait, Richard Nixon created the EPA back in the 60's (?) and he was a Repub - now the Pubs are busy trying to tear it down and pretend it was the Democrats idea...so thats one good thing that has come out of Pubs but other than that, they only serve to show how badly we need a Democratically run govt

Yeah, another one like Jimmy Carter. Ask people that were adults during that period how great things were. There have been bad Presidents on both sides, and plenty of bad politicians on both side. Unfortunately it is always having to choose between the lesser of two evils.
