Bristol Palin Worth $262K Compensation: Foundation

Bristol Palin

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Bristol Palin was well worth the $332,500 she was paid to be an ambassador for a foundation aiming to prevent teen pregnancy, the organization's founder said Wednesday.

In her 2009 debut with The Candies Foundation, the unwed mother and daughter of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was paid $262,500 for 15 to 20 days of work, and another $70,000 for a less amount of work last year.

The money spent has been "an amazing investment," according to foundation founder Neil Cole.

The fact that the 20-year-old Bristol Palin was a teen mother herself shows the problem is a national epidemic, not one limited to inner cities or minorities, Cole said.

Her work advocating abstinence through public service announcements, media interviews and TV and radio spots amounts to more than a billion impressions on people, he said, citing a study conducted by the foundation.

"Someone said in our organization today, Bristol's the gift that keeps on giving," he said.

Palin family attorney John Tiemessen did not immediately return requests for comment Wednesday.

Bristol Palin was 18 when she took the job with the New York-based foundation in 2009, months after giving birth to son, Tripp. She and the boy's father, Levi Johnston, are no longer together.

Her pregnancy was announced days after Sen. John McCain picked her mother to be his Republican vice presidential running mate in 2008.

Bristol Palin told The Associated Press last year she "wasn't prepared at all" for the dramatic changes in her life since giving birth in December 2008.

"It changes literally every aspect of your life, and if girls realized how hard it was to be a teen mom, they would think twice about having sex without the proper education and proper knowledge," she said.

Palin is no longer on the payroll, but she remains a friend of the organization, Cole said.

"She has done incredible work," he said. "She's been bold enough – yes she's been paid for her work – but she's bold enough to get in and talk about it."

Public service announcements by Palin and another celebrity, Jenny McCarthy, are far more effective than those featuring non-celebrities, according to a survey of 1,000 teens commissioned in January by the foundation.

A third of respondents said Palin's message made them consider the consequences of teen pregnancy, compared with 16 percent for non-celebrities. Among those surveyed, 57 percent said Palin got their attention and 41 percent called her message powerful, compared with no more than 28 percent and 11 percent, respectively, for non-celebrities.

The Candie's Foundation is a division of the apparel brand Candie's. Cole said there were 1 million teen pregnancies a year when the foundation first started in 2001, compared with the current rate of 750,000 annually.

Bloggers have criticized the organization for paying Palin more than seven times the $35,000 in grants it issued in 2009 to two organizations that tax documents called "public charities providing services to teenagers at risk." Cole said there is no basis for that criticism.

"That's not what we do for a living," he said. "What we do for a living is create awareness."

Bristol Palin making $262,000 per year to preach abstinence is far more appalling that the CEO of Ford getting a huge bonus for turning that company around. Could anyone possibly be more hypocritical? Watch - she'll probably get knocked up again by some other guy and go 'Oops - I did it again - but you shouldn't because your mama isn't famous.' When I think of all the people who work so hard in the country - around the world - for so much less, it just makes me nauseous.

My daughter is a co-valedictorian, a Fulbright scholar finalist, a state track medalist, and graduated college in 3-1/2 years and has not gotten knocked up and actually practices abstinence. Somehow, she gets by on her $25,000 fellowship doing genomic research. And Bristol - you earned this money how? This is why people are cynical. This is why people want to milk the system - because so many scam artists like the Palins make large amounts of money, while people who work their tails off their whole lives don't make that much and then get a pink slip from the scam artist owners once they reach 50.

This is the person who is supposed to be giving advice to America's teens:

We're done here. There's nothing more to say. I'm tired of this farce. We've endured close to 3 years of her mother's con game. The 2nd generation is no more worthy. We're done here.

This is a public service announcement for every teenage Mother and every unwed Mother too!

Your trials and tribulations are over! Instead of trying to get the child support from the child's father that your child is entitled too you may tell your story to the people at this address: http://www.candiesfoundation.org/

Maybe you will not receive a quarter of a million dollars to deliver a short talk about the horrors of delivering a child instead of having an abortion in your teens but maybe, just maybe, they will help you with the rent, the diapers, the baby sitter for when you go to work!

But they may just GIVE YOU A MERE 1/4 MILL. for having a child "out of wedlock" like they did for Bristol! Are You white? were you 15 when you got pregnant? Was your Mother a politician totting her "Morality" and the benefits of "Family"?

No matter! Its all a joke anyway! Send a email to www.thecandiesfoundation.org and maybe you can have a $250,000 payday! They probably need people of color to help spread the message!

Wait... is she a "celebrity" or not?

This article implies that she's not... but her defender (the anonymous source that also brought up Sarah's fake pregnancy for some reason)... said her income was not out of line for a "celebrity."

Sounds like the Palins figure their knocked up, high-school drop-out, living-with-a-man-now daughter is a "celebrity."

At least she's shut the hell up about Levi trying to cash in a bit on the situation... although she hasn't apparently started letting the Johnston family see Tripp again...

So someone who couldn't practice abstinence despite her family's conservative values, preaches abstinence to other teens........

My 17 year old daughter laughs everytime she sees anything about Bristol. In fact her friends and her think Bristol is the worst type of example.

This is an outrageous amount of money paid to Bristol Plain by the Candie's Foundation. This "Foundation" sounds like it is front for tax write-offs. It is a tax exempt organization that does solicit donations. The tax exempt status of this organization warrants an investigation by the IRS on how it handles those charitable donations.

It certainly appears that in some right-wing circles immorality pays. And it pays, big time. And to think, Bristol's pregnancy could have been avoided by a simple heart-to-heart with her parents about sex and birth control. After all, the Palin family believes that the family, not the government, should be responsible for sex education. The ironies abound, the poster child for celibacy is an unwed teen mother who made a nice $330,000 for her sins.

Jesus dies for our sins, while Palin profits from hers...

Amen to that. Like so many republican's today it's, do as I say...not as I do. I wonder if there are any more openings for a job like that? Get pregnant and make 300,000.00..and then preach against the same thing happening to you...sign me up!

Some 42 years ago I was a teen pregnancy. Perhaps they are misguided in who they have come and talk about life as a teen mother. I have life as a teen mother, a 20 year old a 30 year old, etc., etc.
If they want to have people come and talk about ramifications why not get someone that has lived more life than having a toddler in diapers. Its illogical to use a person like that she cant tell them what the rest of their life will be like she has only lived it a couple of years!

I don't mind a teen mother telling youngsters to be careful about sex. I do mind Bristol preaching abstinence when the biggest lesson from her experience is that having abstinence preached at you doesn't work.
