walletpop.com:

Flying the friendly skies doesn't feel so friendly these days.

What seems like a mounting list of hidden and not-so-hidden airline fees can make travelers feel like they're being taken for more than just one kind of ride.

And you're not just imagining that flight-related fees seem to be buzzing through more and more of your travel budget. It's a sign of the times.

These airlines nickel and dime us to death, too bad I have to use them, but sometimes I cannot drive where I want to go. Its just too far and bridges have not been built yet, to Europe.

At this point, it's just obscene. I traveled on Delta last week, and on my way home my checked bag was 54lbs--4lbs over their limit. They wanted to charge me $90 in addition to the $23 that I already paid to check the bag. For 4lbs--I was fit to be tied!! Instead, I had to purchase a second bag and pack that bag in the middle of airport with not a bit of privacy. In the end, I paid $35 for what Delta calls "excessive bags." It's hard to travel for more than a few days with just carry-on luggage, especially when all your toiletries are no longer permitted through security and a pocketbook is considered carry-on. I know that they're all bad, and it's merely which one's worse, but I'll never travel Delta again. It's just outrageous.

54 pounds?! I could travel in perpetuity with under 30 pounds, including camera, laptop. I ride in jeans and a Harris Tweed. Pack another pair of jeans, khakis, and dark dress pants. Take two pullover shirts, a dress shirt, and a tie, and some socks. Buy toothpaste and disposable razors when I get there, If it's cold weather, take an overcoat on board. If it rains, buy a cheap poncho somewhere.

54 Lbs of luggage? How long were you travelling for? I've gone on a 2 week trips with less than 35 lbs of luggage...

Your options:
1) Fly Southwest Airlines (not just my opinion, read the article).
2) Take Amtrak
3) Stay Home

Or learn to pack lightly which is what I've done. I haven't checked a bag in years.
