Arab World Protests: The Week In Libya, Egypt, Yemen And More

Libya Protest

First Posted: 04/10/11 01:11 PM ET Updated: 06/10/11 06:12 AM ET

Syria's nearly month-long uprising entered a grisly new phase this week, with protesters reporting casualties after security forces opened fire onto thousands on Friday.

Elsewhere in the Arab world, Egypt's protesters stepped up their challenge to the country's military, with tens of thousands demanding the persecution of ousted president Hosni Mubarak for alleged corruption.

Relying on the AP to tell you what is going on in the ME is like relying on Fox to tell you what is going on in the US.

The filtering, spinning, and torquing is so bad, what gets through only compounds existing ignorance of reality, while those who have managed to become informed despite the efforts to 'inform' people have (thanks to the internet) access to sources that actually are informative, so they don't have to take the articles and use the skills that eastern europeans (amongst others) developed during the days of the Soviet empire to slip beneath the surface and find what is hidden underneath.

I agree. It's really hard to determine if the Arab sources thr AP uses are lying or not until it's too late! But NYT writer Judith Miller "got it right" from her Arab source,Curveball, about WMD? OOPS..he and Chalabi LIED! No shock!

Wondering how American news gets massaged?
How AP works
"Since most newspapers don't have their own reporters in Israel or the Palestinian Territories, they obtain their news on this region from wire services. AP is usually the only global wire service taken by U.S. newspapers.
Although AP is a cooperative, which means that it is "owned" by all the news organizations that use its news, in reality there is almost no oversight of its work. Editors around the country simply accept its reporting at face value.
The trouble is, however, that its reporting is consistently Israeli-centric.
The "control bureau" for the region, through which all news reports are funneled, is located in Israel. Its editors are living in Israel, their families are frequently Israeli, and quite often they themselves are Israeli citizens.
Even when an AP report carries a Palestinian dateline and even a Palestinian byline, in the large majority of cases the article was actually written in Israel, frequently by an Israeli editor.
A study of AP's reporting found that it had reported on Israeli children's deaths at a rate seven times greater than they reported on Palestinian children's deaths – even though Palestinian children were killed first and in far greater numbers"
http://israelpalestinenews.wordpress.com/2011/04/08/israeli-army-strikes-gaza-after-school-bus-hit-%E2%80%93-deconstructed/
This blog will deconstruct AP's daily reporting on Israel-Palestine: it will discuss its editors' word choices, editorial decisions, and headlines. It will especially explore which "context" AP's editors on this beat have chosen to include and which to ignore.

Mallarky! The AP uses Arab/Palestinian sources when covering stories all the time. A lot of the time it is later learned that the Arabs LIED about what actually happened...even though the AP reported it as fact! VERY BAD TRY!

Thinking Americans who note the one-sided reporting of AP and the bias of MSM towards Israel might disagree with you. It's 'Malarkey', btw.

On Sunday (now yesterday), the Arab League met in Cairo and decided to ask the U.N. Security Council to convene an emergency meeting regarding Israel's air and artillery attacks on Gaza. They plan to ask that a no-fly zone be initiated and enforced over Gaza in order to protect civilians. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/world/2011-04/11/c_13822345.htm

With every week my respect for the people of the Arab world rises.
Their non-violence uprisings show that the picture that was usually painted of them in our media was completely upside down.

And they are not duped by fake-changes like Mubaraks step down. I hope their amazing courage will pay off.

The Middle East seems to be heeding that old adage from India;

Those who beg in silence starve in silence.
