Prince William & Kate Middleton Step Out In Blackburn (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 04/11/2011 8:12 am   Updated: 06/11/2011 5:12 am

Prince William and Kate Middleton stepped out in Blackburn, England on Monday as part of their last official trip before they swing by Westminster Abbey on April 29.

According to the Associated Press, the two inaugurated a community academy, rolled out a youth award named for Wills and checked out a country park.

True to British form, it was a rainy day in the northwestern town. Royal bride Catherine opted for a sleek navy skirt suit with hook and eye closures by Amanda Wakeley, paired with a clutch and pumps. Her hair was up (possibly secured by a banana clip? Would she wear such a thing?) and she accessorized with an umbrella.

The Associated Press report by Martin Benedyk:

BLACKBURN, England (AP) - Prince William and fiancee Kate Middleton brought their electric smiles to northwest England on Monday for the last trip in their pre-wedding tour of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Adoring crowds in Blackburn ignored a steady rain and lined up early to get a glimpse of the royal couple, who plan to marry April 29 at Westminster Abbey in London. One of them, Lillian Sleigh, braved the weather in her wheelchair, which was decorated with Union Jacks and pictures of the royal couple.

"I came here early, even though it's pouring with rain, to make sure I get the best chance of seeing William and Kate," she said. "They're a lovely couple and as for William, his mother Diana would have been so proud of him."

The trip marked Middleton's final introduction to the royal duties that will become a regular part of her life and gave people across the United Kingdom a glimpse of their likely future queen.

Most observers agree the four trips were a big success, with the youthful Middleton showing an adroit touch with Britons from all walks of life. She also won style points for her fashion choices and won people over with her easy smile and relaxed demeanor.

William, in a blue suit and dark tie, played the role of proud husband-to-be to near perfection. He let Middleton take center stage most of the time even as he handled public speaking duties, including a brief speech Monday in support of an educational charity.

The royal couple arrived first at the Darwen Aldridge Community Academy, where William launched a "prince's award" for the educational charity SkillForce.

They then visited Witton Country Park in the afternoon as part of William's commitment to protect outdoor recreational spaces. Crowds swelled there despite the damp, leaden skies and police were out in force.

The sun came out, as if on cue, when William and Middleton arrived at the sports field.

"It was absolutely worth the wait," said Linda Gregson, 52, of Darwen, after spending 2 and 1/2 hours in the rain with her son to briefly see the royal couple.

Middleton looked elegant, with her hair partly swept up and wearing a navy skirt and matching tailored jacket. She carried a matching clutch bag and wore high-heeled shoes despite the damp weather and mushy athletic field, where she started a race for teenage girls by dropping a white flag.

She and William mingled easily with youths competing in a series of athletic events, including a cycling competition for disabled teens. They shook hands several well-wishers and accepted bouquets of flowers, and Middleton showed her sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring to two young girls who asked for a close-up look.

The couple also met with some Olympic hopefuls who had been invited, including pole vaulter Holly Bleasdale.

"We had a bit of a chat about how my training was going," said Bleasdale, 19. "They were very interested in how I got into it. Kate said that she used to be a bit of a high jumper, so that's good to know that they're quite sporty."

The couple showed no obvious signs of pre-wedding jitters, although William has said he is getting nervous as the big day approaches. Middleton has still managed to keep her wedding dress details secret from Britain's ravenous tabloids.

Gosh she is beautiful! I cannot wait to see what her wedding gown looks like! She's handled all the pressure very well. She might not be Diana but I do think she is well on her way to becoming a style icon; I am already a big fan of her fashion choices. William got a good one!

I agree; she's a lovely woman. They seem like a modern couple who realize they're in a sort of absurd situation but are handling it well.

In an earlier post I remarked on the fact that Kate Middleton was carrying her own umbrella and pointed out that here in the Republic of Ireland our president has been pictured with someone else holding the brolly and that this would be common with celebs and royalty. A letter in today's Irish Times is critical of the fact that a senior Army officer carries President McAleese's umbrella whereas Queen Elizabeth has been photographed carrying her own! Another newspaper pointed out that the Queen often has a see-through umbrella whereas poor Kate had to hold her brolly up high so that she could be seen. This story could run and run - especially in countries renowned for their rainfall.

Love how everyone speculates Diana would adore Kate. I am sure she would sympathize with the media scrutiny the girl faces but I am not sure she would approve of her one stint at a job in the last eight years. Here's a Diana quote:
"People think at the end of the day that a man is the only answer. Actually a job is better for me."

I'm really not so sure, seeing that the only job that Diana ever held was as a nursery school teachers aide (i.e. upper-class child-minder).

If Diana hadn't married Charles, I doubt that her professional life would have turned out any differently to Kate's.

Diana worked with the qualifications she had at 19 and held two jobs! One as nursery school teacher and one as full time nanny. It's actually not as easy as you think. She didn't use her name to get them, the mom of the boy she babysat did not even know she was aristocracy. There's so point wondering what "would" have happened if she didn't marry Charles. She held two jobs, then job married and gave a guy who didn't deserve her two boys and became an international donor. She also wanted a job from the Parliament as humanitarian ambassador and the PM was thrilled but the queen wouldn't let her, so she did it unofficially and worked tireless to use the press attention she got for the good. I don't see her slacking around for eight years in any period of her life.

i think in light of the problems sophie encountered with work conflicting with royal duties that kate was counseled. this relationship broke off for a while and for them to reunite there would have been some very difficult conversations that followed.
i don't doubt their feelings for one another but if the monarchy is to endure they know that there cannot be mistakes made.

not to mention that fact that kate will be HRH and it wouldn't do for a subject to be dishing out orders to her. And nothing worse than people selling their story to the press about what kind of worker kate was
i think very early on this was all thought through so there could be nothing to tarnish her reputation.

I like that she's pulling her hair back and not letting it hang in her face. I wonder what Kate would look like with a chignon.

On a different note, you can tell that she's lost quite a bit of late with what might be wedding stress. In some of the photos that I've seen of her, the skirt looks baggy, and she's not a big woman. I hope she has some ice cream or whatever sweet treat she likes on her honeymoon so that she doesn't look so bony in Canada.

Finally, she needs a different fabric, the skirt became very creased and wrinkled while she was on walk about with William.

a chignon? she would look 20 years older. These hair are freedom and modernity.

It's interesting to speculate about the nature of the relationship Diana and Kate would have had if Diana were still alive.

On the plus side, both women love William and that (plus the next generation's "heir and spare") should make for a very strong bond between them. They also share a love of style and fashion, as well as outsider status in that both would marry into the royal family, Kate as rich commoner and Diana as a member of the aristocracy.

On the minus side, it's hard to know how Diana would react to a younger and equally glamorous woman in the royalty spotlight. Today, Diana would be a few months shy of her 50th birthday and no longer the vibrant young woman she was when she tragically died at age 36. Plus, once Kate is married she'd actually outrank Diana, since Diana sadly lost her HRH status when she divorced Charles. These facts could make for a bumpy relationship, especially since Diana frequently dropped the very people who were closest to her (Fergie, Elton John, Versace etc.) as friends.

So in short, I would think Kate would have needed to watch her step with Diana, just as she now needs to be on her guard with both Camilla and the Queen. I'm sure Kate would have done anything in her power to please Diana, but unfortunately, that might not have been enough.

Nancy, I have thought that all along. Kate is lucky that Diana is a poignant ghost, annoying as it may be at times, rather than a living, breathing m-i-l. I think Diana, who was a bit of a narcissist, would have been very difficult for every reason you described.

I agree. Diana didn't like competition, and Kate would've been competition. Also, Elton John has said publicly that Diana was very "airy fairy" with her friendships. So, it might mean that Diana wasn't as solid a friend as one would hope.

As much as every little girl grows up wanting to be a princess, I don't envy this young woman. The worldwide press scrutiny is going to be BRUTAL, for the rest of her life. She will be under the microscope for every detail of her life, from her choice in handbags to the way she raises her children, and heaven forbid she gain or lose 10 pounds. She seems like a lovely woman and the relationship she has with William seems to be a good, solid one. I hope so, because she will need a strong defender and a true friend to endure the blitz. Good luck, lady!
