According to an eight-hour preliminary court hearing Monday, University of Virginia lacrosse player George Huguely did not realize that his savage beating of former girlfriend Yeardley Love last year had killed her.

"She's dead, George, and you killed her," Detective Lisa Reeves told him hours after Love's body was found face down in a bloody pillow by her roommate May 3, the lawyers said.Huguely responded that he did not believe the police and added: "There is nothing I did to her last night that could have killed her," they said.
According to police documents, the 6'2, 209-pound Huguely said that he swung the petite Love by her neck and shook her. Love was discovered by a roommate face-down in a pool of her own blood. Her death was ruled a homicide in July.
Huguely's lawyer, Rhonda Quagliana, said that the student "did not believe such a terrible thing could have happened." The defense maintains that their client had no intention of killing Love. In court, they said that a hand-written note from Huguely to Love reading "You are my best friend" was found in Love's bedroom.
A grand jury is expected to decide later this month whether or not to indict Huguely.
