NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- California authorities have arrested a man suspected of stealing more than $280,000 from a 98-year-old widow who was deaf, blind and senile.

John Windsor of Costa Mesa was arrested in Newport Beach on Wednesday. He remains jailed and has been charged by Orange County prosecutors with forgery, caretaker theft from an elder, and other crimes. Windsor could face more than 11 1/2 years in prison if convicted.

Windsor's mother was the live-in caretaker for a Newport Beach woman who died in 2009 at age 99.

Prosecutors say Windsor, a Vermont prison parolee, moved into her home in 2007, obtained her power of attorney, used her credit card and emptied her bank accounts to buy cars and other items.
