Chris Christie Faces Slim Support For Hypothetical Presidential Run Back Home: Poll

Chris Christie Poll

First Posted: 04/14/11 10:55 AM ET Updated: 06/14/11 06:12 AM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is often mentioned as a presidential contender, but fewer than one in four voters in his home state would back him as a candidate, a poll released on Thursday said.

Two-thirds of registered voters "oppose Chris Christie for president in 2012," according to the Rutgers-Eagleton Poll.

Fewer than half of Republicans and a quarter of independents support Christie as a candidate, the poll found.

"This does not mean a future try would be opposed, just that New Jerseyans aren't joining the national media's storyline that Christie could take the nomination in 2012 if he wanted it," said David Redlawsk, director of the Rutgers-Eagleton Poll and professor of political science at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Christie, a former prosecutor, has been seen as a rising Republican party star since taking office last year and pushing a lean-government, low-tax agenda. But he has said he did not think he was ready to be president and did not plan to run in 2012.

New Jersey voters are unconvinced the buzz surrounding the governor's political future is good for the state, the poll found.

Nearly two-thirds of those polled said having a governor on the national stage makes no difference or hurts the state's image, while a third of voters said it was a good thing for New Jersey.

The poll of 773 registered voters was conducted from March 28 to April 4 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Apparently you forgot why corzine LOST...cause he was gonna raise them dramatically, and Christie KILLED that raise in the RATE...he cant help the county and local tax increases only the state portion and that is what he did not raise, but I think that you already know that, and you are probably a union guy who doesnt like him reigning them in a TINY little bit!
--------------------------------------------------------

Two things:

My property tax bill INCREASED this year over what it was last year. John Corzine lost the election last year and Christie won. Do you REALLY need for me to connect the dots for you on what that means?

I've only had one union job once in my entire life, and that was literally decades ago. I don't belong to a union in at my current place of place of employment. And I can say from first-hand experience that with only TWO exceptions, the majority of non-union companies I have every worked for did not hesitate to use the leverage they had in running slipshod over the employees when it suited them--which it often did.

The jury is still out on my current employer on whether I can add them to my life-long short list of exceptions....

Let's see if he can win his governorship re-election first. This is a guy who will be go to party in Cacun when there is a terrorist attack in America and will tell Americans the Homeland Security people were capable of handling the situation. If pressed further, he will say my wife made me go!

12:13 PM on 04/17/2011
Agreed. He is very bad news. Unfortunately, Jon Corzine was a horrible candidate for New Jersey Governor and he lost a BLUE state. This guy Christie came into office with bear loaded and all guns blazing, thinking that the people of New Jersey wanted what he wanted, which was to blow the whole apparatus of state government up. It's the same situation as with the ignorant and rabid Tea Partyers who vote for right wing anarchists. Instead of carefully listerning to political candidates and analyzing their positions the Yahoo electorate votes are based on mendacious sound bites. Then, when they get their candidate of choice as elected official they cry in their beer and say, "hey, this isn't what I signed up for".

I am disappointed with the comments on this story. I thought liberals were open minded and intelligent. All of the comments are either insults about Mr. Christie's size or a vague statement that say he is against the middle cast and for wall street. No one has make any comments about his policies or laws that he has passed that have failed and "hurt the middle class". I guess that as long as he has an "R" next to his name it is acceptable to insult Mr. Christie's size.

I listen to people's opinions and look at their performance. Although I usually vote republican, I did vote for Clinton in 1996 because I felt that he was doing a good job.

I feel that Barack Obama has done a poor job as president and can list the policies or laws that I disagree or failed.

If I typed a comment on an article about Barack Obama where the only statement entered was an insult about African-Americans referring to President Obama, i would be chastised by every liberal on this size (and rightly so).

It seems that insulting heavy people and conservatives is acceptable to liberals.

Liberals claim to have compassion for people, but it appears that depends on an individual's opinion.

Yet another comment with no substance and just another insult. This is really that difficult to identify Mr. Christie's policies or law passed that have hurt the middle class or you disagree. This is not quantum physics. It is a simple question about your opinion. There is no right or wrong answer. Other than his political party is there anything that Mr. Christie has done that has failed. He said that he would balance the budget without increasing taxes during the election and has kept that promise. I find it difficult to believe that there are no democrat party members or liberals who can articulate their opinion without using the same vague Republicans are harming the middle class and helping wall street. If you feel that they are doing that what policy or law has resulted in your opinion

A post from a Jerseyan:
Christie nearly tripled the yearly budget deficit last year, if you include not paying into the state worker's pension. It will be 13 billion with no pension funding this year, which would make it 16 billion./ Christie defunded education to a level so low that a judge recently ruled it unconstitutional. Christie gave that money he cut from education to 16000 millionairres, himself included. / His wife, who has no function in government, has three personal, 100,000 dollar a year aides, on our dime./ Unemployment has increased drastically due to the failed trickle down theory. / He has attempted to destroy the unions for cops, teachers, and firefighters. I am a teacher, and I had no problem with his cutting our salary and forcing larger pension contributions; it's the right thing to do. I do have a problem when he proposes a law that would cut my salary about another 8000 dollars while capping my raises at 200 dollars a year, which means that in 2051 I can again make what I make this year. I also have a problem with walking into a classroom that has no books because the budget didn't have the money, and where I start my year spending a thousand dollars for basic supplies to survive while the person who did this to my classroom of 180 kids a day laughs and his wife's cook makes them dinner while they watch their tax payer sponsored gardener trim around the house.

As a fellow New Jerseyan, I would first like to say that I do not agree that personally insulting anyone is an effective debate strategy. I completely agree with Christopher and would like to add the fact that our real estate taxes have increased by 10% in 2010 and may be going up again this year. Our state already has the highest rates in the country and I see little or no discussion about this. I am a senior citizen and this ia a serious issue for myself and my husband. Also, we are in the real estate industry and I was recently told that New Jersey has more houses for sale than any other state. I do find it disturbing when I hear praise heaped on our governor. Is anyone actually checking the facts
