iPhone 4 Poised To Be Most-Popular Camera On Flickr

The Most Popular Camera On Flickr Is...

Smartphones like Apple's iPhone 4 helped put Cisco's Flip video camera out of business. Will point-and-shoot cameras be next?

According to data from Flickr's camera finder, which displays the "number of Flickr members who have uploaded at least one photo or video with a particular camera on a given day over the last year," Apple's iPhone 4 is about to overtake Nikon's D90 point-and-shoot, as well as three other digital cameras, as the most popular camera among Flickr users. (See graph below)

The iPhone 4 claims over 4,000 daily users on Flickr and to-date around 5.8 million photos have been uploaded with the device.

Flickr's charts suggests that the popularity of point-and-shoot cameras is on a steep decline. Moreover, the situation for these standalone cameras could even more dire than it looks: Flickr notes that its data actually under-represents the usage of cameraphones as automatically detecting the camera with which photos and video were shot is usually tricky with cameraphones.

The iPhone 4 is the most popular cameraphone among Flickr users, followed by the iPhone 3G and 3GS, as well as the HTC Evo 4G and iPod Touch. On average, around 9,400 Flickr users use iPhones (3G, 3GS, or 4) to upload media to the photo-sharing site each day. Apple's iPod Touch and iPad 2 are far less popular when it comes to photo sharing: an average of 428 users per day use iPod Touches and an average of 9 users per day use iPad 2s to post media to Flickr.
