The New York Times:

On May 26, 2009, Robert Lustig gave a lecture called "Sugar: The Bitter Truth," which was posted on YouTube the following July. Since then, it has been viewed well over 800,000 times, gaining new viewers at a rate of about 50,000 per month, fairly remarkable numbers for a 90-minute discussion of the nuances of fructose biochemistry and human physiology.

Yes, we should all eat the most basic, bland foods necessary to live. Give me a break!

No, I was commenting on all the "you don't really need this in your food" hype/scare tactics about SO many things by certain people.

This is an excellent lecture. Very good points made, particularly about the engineering of food to override the human satiety circuitry in the brain. This is really sickening. I have been hooked on this crap my entire life and it is very hard to change.

I have read Many studies stating that HFCS does not satisfy one's desire for something sweet the way cane sugar does & actually makes one eat MORE of it to feel full. HFCS is the toxic food, Not Cane sugar.
There are also some good studies showing strong correlations between the rise in Obesity in the U.S. and the higher use of HFCS as opposed to cane sugar. HFCS doesn't break down in the body the same way (no matter What they try to tell us).

Gee. not many comments by the anti-HFCS crowd today. ahhhh..wazzamatter? There has been a lot said on HuffPost about how high fructose corn syrup (45% or 55% fructose) is suppose to be bad.

BUT, as the article points out, that "healthy" cane sugar is 50% fructose. 50% fructose!!

hahahbahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I never got Migraines until they started loading up things with HFCS & they put it in EVERYTHING. It's not just "sweet" foods like ice cream and soft drinks (& it makes THOSE very Thick Tasting, coating my tongue), but it's in breakfast cereals, bread, yogurt and Many more "healthy" food types! I can't afford to go to a "natural foods" store because the prices are higher so I'm stuck with paying BIG MONEY for migraine meds. It's the big money farmers get for corn subsidies which makes it cheaper to use than cane sugar. SUBSIDIZE Cane Sugar Farmers, PLEASE!! I'm SICK of having headaches every day & REFUSE to starve to death!

Actually, almost anything ingested in too large a quantity can be toxic. It would appear from the linked article that there is plenty of evidence that sugar is directly responsible for insulin resistance, which means that it is toxic over a long period. However, there are insufficient studies of sufficient longevity to determine that definitively at this time.

Neither is alcohol - in moderation. I think the argument is that our diet is being engineered for us to create plenty, but the plenty is very poor quality and bad for us. Personally I believe there is no substitute, nor should we choose it if there was, for the natural human diet.

Yes. Look up hyponatremia. People have died from drinking too much water too fast.

This is OLD news. "All substances are poisons; there is none which is not a poison. The right dose differentiates a poison and a remedy." Paracelsus (1493-1541).
