Obama Taxes & Income: President & First Lady Paid $453,770 In Taxes On $1.7 Million Income

Obama Tax Returns Earning

TOM RAUM   04/18/11 09:19 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is making less money than he used to, though it's still a lot: He and wife Michelle reported income of $1.73 million last year, mostly from the books he's written, according to his just-filed tax return. That was down from the $5.5 million of a year earlier.

The president, who has been campaigning to raise taxes on the wealthy, paid the government $453,770 in federal taxes, about a quarter of the income. Just last week, he renewed his push to end Bush-era tax cuts for households with annual incomes above $250,000 – noting that that would include him.

The White House released tax returns for the Obamas and for Vice President Joe Biden and his wife on Monday, the deadline for Americans to file.

The president for the first time drew his full $400,000 salary in 2010, since in 2009 he didn't start drawing pay until after his inauguration in late January.

Through withholding and estimated tax payments during the year, the Obamas paid $466,104 to the Internal Revenue Service. That was an overpayment, so they are getting a $12,334 refund.

The first family's adjusted gross income for 2010 was $1.728 million. Their taxable income after deductions was $1.34 million.

The income for both years was mostly driven by royalties from books written earlier by Obama. They included his 1995 memoir "Dreams From My Father" and his 2006 political book, "The Audacity of Hope." Those were followed by a children's book last year, "Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters."

Obama is a former law school professor and U.S. senator. His book sales slacked off some from 2009, when they surged after his inauguration. But last year they still netted him nearly $1.4 million.

The president and first lady donated $245,075 – about 14.2 percent of their adjusted gross income – to 36 different charities. The largest was a contribution of $131,075 to the Fisher House Foundation, which provides humanitarian support to members of the United States Armed Forces and their families.

They also made a $15,000 contribution to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund and a $10,000 gift to the Boys and Girls Club of America.

Their contributions were below the $329,100 they gave to charities in 2009. That year, Obama also donated his entire $1.4 million Nobel Peace Prize award, which wasn't counted as income since it went directly to 10 charities.

Although the White House released the returns on the deadline day, Obama signed his 1040 form last Tuesday. Michelle Obama signed it last Wednesday.

The first family also released their Illinois income tax returns showing they paid $51,568 in state taxes.

On their federal return, the Obamas claimed itemized deductions of $78,269 for state and local taxes and $49,945 for home mortgage interest on their home in Chicago.

Vice President Biden and his wife, Jill, reported more modest earnings, a combined adjusted gross income of $379,178, on which they paid $86,626 in federal taxes for 2010.

Withholding from their salaries came to just $79,446 – so they had a tax bill of $7,180 to settle.

In all, the Obamas paid 26 percent of their adjusted gross income in federal income taxes. The Bidens paid 23 percent.

The Bidens paid $14,479 in Delaware income taxes and $3,515 in Virginia income taxes. Jill Biden is an adjunct professor at Northern Virginia Community College. The Bidens contributed $5,360 to charities.

Obama last week revived his campaign to attempt to end the Bush tax cuts of the early 1990s back to the levels of the 1990s, although he would leave them intact for joint fillers earning under $250,000 a year and individuals earning below $200,000.

The top income rate now is 35 percent. Recent studies show that the wealthiest Americans pay a lot less in taxes than they did two decades ago, and that about 45 percent of U.S. households pay no taxes because the nation's tax laws are packed with breaks for people at every income level.

The right wants you, of course, to focus on the $457K in taxes...and the American people, too often, do....they think "Wow! That is a lot of money to pay in taxes!".

When what the American people should be thinking is: "Wow...you mean they could have blown $100.00 every single hour - awake AND asleep - of every single day last year and still had enough money left over to pay my family's rent, car payment, food bills, and health insurance - FIVE times over? I thought rich people had it tough?".

There! Did the rich people pay enough for all you lefties? Happy now?

He paid 25% with a 35% tax bracket - almost as low as Bidens at 23%. Our tax system benefits the wealthiest and just raising the rate doesn't work. Only tax reform with lower rates and limited deductions will work.

See this how you lead, and not follow. He could have found loophole after loophole, and paid next to nothing. Here's a leader that actually paid taxes. The lot of them would rather spend a few hundred thousand dollars to "re-elect" some guy to gut the tax code for them. To have acutally paid nearly a half million dollars in taxes should really shame his Jobs Czar and many members of the Chamber of Commerce.
08:18 PM on 04/20/2011
Uh, you might want to re-read the article. They took almost $400K in exemptions, otherwise known as "loopholes".

Exemptions aren't loopholes. Exemptions are claiming children as dependents when you have children, claiming losses and expenses that you actually have. Loopholes are where you can get out of paying what you should because the tax code was written poorly.

Now that the president has paid almost a half-million dollars in taxes, would it be wrong to ask General Electric to pay at least one dollar in income taxes. My point is most of you are here waisting your time on the president while you should be looking at those who get away with not paying taxes and make more in a day than what Obama makes in an entire year.
08:34 PM on 04/20/2011
One more time: taxes are paid on profits. GE is still working through losses from the financial collapse. Tax law allows them, and ANY other business, to spread those losses over subsequent years (carry forward) so that they don't have to file bankruptcy. In the meantime, they pay ample amounts of taxes as do their employees, who would not pay any taxes had they lost their jobs due to a GE bankruptcy.

More to the point, why do we have a tax code that actually makes it worthwhile for companies to employ squadrons of accountants and tax specialists to navigate it? What a waste of time and capital.

uh...how much (billon dollar bills will do nicely, thank you) is GE holding offshore pending Citizens United enabling them and their peers to purchase enough seats in Congress to reduce the tax liability on offshore earnings so they can bring it all back and distribute it in "bonuses" for the e-suite?

And to answer your question as to why we have a tax code that makes it worthwhile for companies to employ squadrons of tax accountants and tax specialists:

http://www.publicampaign.org/reports/artfuldodgers/telecom

Quick Facts on General Electric

Campaign Contributions: Total Over 10 Years (2001-2010), $13 million
Lobbying Expenditures: Total Over 10 Years (2001-2010), $205 million
Government Contracts: $3.9 billion in 2008; $24 billion from 2000-2008
Profits Over Last 5 Years: $26 billion
Tax Refund for Last 5 Years: $4.1 billion

'Cuz those companies BOUGHT that tax code from Congress.

2011 AMT married filing jointly
$0-$74450 0%
$74451-$150000 26%
$150001-$229960 32.5%
$229961-$447800 35%
$447801 or more 28%

notice anything funny? If you make above $447k your tax rate drops 7%. AMT is designed to screw the working class.

Don't know who started making this a racial blog. IT IS NOT. It is about the amount a US citizen (I think) paid in taxes and nothing else. Only Racists would start shouting the race card.

If I', not mistaken. Doesnt our president only make $400,00.00 a year and he made last year 1.7 million. Thats quaddrupple his salary ?????? He should let us all in on how he managed to pull that one off so we all can quaddrupple our base salaries. And when did the presidents salary go from $100,000.00 to $400,000.00. I dont every remember voting on anything to increase his salary.

I can't believe the idiocy of some people in these comments. When you overpay your taxes, the government gives it back to you, so you can't just overpay. Also, you can't 'donate' money to the government like you can a charity. The charities need all the help they can get when they have to help even more people thanks to the government cutting social programs (which equivocate to a miniscule amount of the budget). Obama is pushing to raise taxes on those that make as much as he does - he's TRYING TO PAY MORE.
As for the person equivocating the 'tea party' to black people as a minority, please get a clue. Black people were oppressed because they were black, the tea party is full of racist idiots. They are in no way being discriminated against and treated unfairly like black people were. They are the ones trying to do the discriminating, or did you not see the article about the monkey email? Perhaps they don't buy billboard space in your area that says "MARXIST" or "NARCISSIST", like they do in my state. Tea partiers show up to rally's protesting against taxes and entitlements in the scooter chairs that MEDICARE bought them.
06:15 PM on 04/20/2011
just to let you know, you can donate money to the government, just like you do a charity.

http://www.fms.treas.gov/faq/moretopics_gifts.html

as far as the monkey email proving "the tea party is full of racist idiots" is idiocy. to claim the whole of a group as large as the tea party is defined by a single or a few members.

Unbelievable!! You are aware that you can give as much as you want to the government, right? Unless the only reason that you are giving is to get a tax deduction.

No, FaerieJ is right. You can give to any charity, but you cannot pay a tax to the government without filling out the proper paperwork and making the numbers add up. They don't keep a little kitty for volunteer over-payers who claim they want to make a gift. If you over pay, you will get the money back.
02:45 PM on 04/20/2011
What is the point of this? I suppose it is good that it is legal to report things like this, and that this is public information, but why is there an article about it here? So I can feel good about paying much less in taxes or bad about earning much less?

I think the time has come to STOP using capital letters when mentioning the "tea party". They have proved over and over that using hate and divisiveness precludes them from a serious seat at ANY table. Perhaps the kid's table, maybe the table outside, the wobbly folding one you set up under the tree during a lightning storm.

It's past time to turn them into the marginal party of court jesters that they deserve, if that isn't too good for them. The majority are on the far side of whacked out of their minds, and need to be exposed on a daily basis. The HP does a great job in the Comedy section of doing that. We all need to forward all that to Facebook, Twitter and directly to friends. Lets marginalize THEM!!

Your post sounds the same as when people were uppity about African Americans. "Don't listen to them, they are a minority!" "Let's marginalize THEM!"

How times have changed now the folks who preach tolerance are the ones spewing the racism, social, and class warfare. YOU PEOPLE can do better! Come on, we are all AMERICANS who might differ a bit on paths but are ALL good people.

Marginalizing dangerous and ill-conceived political views is hardly the same as marginalizing people because of the color of their skin.

The tea party exists entirely on the basis of white racism. Not one of the issues they go on about now bothered them enough to make them form a party until we had a black candidate running for POTUS. Despite record debt and tax breaks only for the wealthy, despite record illegal immigration, and all for the previous eight years, not ONE of these issues were enough to create the need for a tea-party. Until ignorant white people got scared they were losing control, and smart white people with plenty of money funded their so-called grass movement.
05:51 PM on 04/20/2011
The tea party Express was funded in part by mega-millionaires like the Koch Bros, etc, who managed to escape paying any tax whatsoever, just as GE, Pratt, Bank Of America Et Al, who SHOULD be exposed! At no time was I inferring that any individual's belief's system should be marginalized, only the corporate funded "movement for the people" that allegedly has their best interests at heart. If you truly believe that Paul Ryan cares if you live or die, you're fooling yourselves. The way things are going, there'll be a LOT of death in the US, if these draconian cuts happen. Pesthouses and pestilence await us.
That President Obama actually PAID taxes is something that most people in his income bracket do not do, and that is also borne out by the FACTS. When the B Of A ate my 401K plan three years ago, I lost over a quarter million bucks, overnight. Just who do you think got that money? JP Morgan and all the other bailouters got it. Surprize?
Now they'll steal the little that I've contributed to the Social Security program, in order to pay for more wars, the "War On Drugs" being the most egregious waste in history, and shows what NOT to do if you can find funds to support it.
Soon I'll be moving out of the US, to a Caribbean nation where I can live at a low cost with universal health care, and much more. Cannot Wait!
