Volumes Of Success: Chicago Bookstore Tutors Thousands Of Kids

Open Books -- known as "the most beautiful bookstore in Chicago" -- houses more than 50,000 books and countless stories of student achievement.

Stacked with secondhand books donated by the community, the store brings in about half the money needed to support a literacy program that provides tutoring and mentoring for kids.

The program, founded by Stacey Ratner, has helped more than 2,300 students so far, NBC reports.

Ratner tells NBC lagging literacy rates motived her to start the program.

"If you can't read the bus schedule, how are you going to get to work? If your kids don't know how to read, how are they going to grow up to have the kinds of lives they want to have?

Open Books also sends volunteers to schools for weekly tutoring sessions.
