Axilase Procedure To Stop Sweating: Would You Try It? (VIDEO)

Pit stains -- we've all had them -- but what if you could be rid of the fears of ruining your favorite gray shirts and publicly displaying your perspiration problem forever?

Dr. Mitchell Chasin of Bridgewater, New Jersey, has come up with Axilase, a procedure that uses a laser to destroy sweat glands for those with hyperhidrosis, or extreme sweating. The operation lasts only 30 minutes and rings in at $3,000 -- an amount worth dishing out for the twenty people who've tried it so far. (It's not covered by insurance.)

Kris Marra talked with "Good Morning America" about her decision to go under the...laser. She confessed, "When I'm nervous it's the worst. I'm pretty nervous socially, so a lot of times when I'm with a group of people, I'll be sweating, when I'm in class I sweat. The only time I'm not sweating is when I'm sleeping." Two weeks later, she sure looked like a happy camper.

Check out the report and tell us what you think.

Quick Poll

Axilase:

I'd try it! Where do I sign up?

I'll try it when it comes down in price and/or is covered by insurance.

Count me out! Sweating is natural.

I also suffer from hyperhidrosis. To get off of it, I tried nearly everything: sage helped at the beginning, but soon it wasn't enough. Now I have a new try with medicine. For all Germans who suffer from hyperhidrosis, there is a objective website full of information: http://www.stark-gegen-schwitzen.de with a lot of useful hints.
Some antiperspirants are introduced, perhaps you find somethin useful. But be careful if your skin is sensitive, then perhaps it is better to take some medicine.

Would absolutely try this and be rid of antiperspirants that have aluminum.

I love the way my girlfriend smells when she doesn't wear deodorant, and she knows it.

I crave sex with her when she gets like that... Hooray for the weekends -- she stops wearing it on Fridays

The problem is that when we block our ability to sweat from one part of our bodies (like our underarms), our bodies tend to compensate by sweating more profusely elsewhere -- our bodies know what they need...

You are correct Cynth. I suffer from hyperhidrosis of the armpits. It's really embarrassing, and difficult to deal with. I protect my clothes with sweat protection pads, and this usually works ok. My doctor suggested everything from botox treatments (injected into the sweat glands), which would provide about 6 months of relief. My other option is to have the sweat glands removed. Neither option is viable for me, nor is this laser treatment, precisely because the sweat has to pour out from somewhere. This would most-likely cause profuse sweating of the feet, forehead, etc. No thanks. I'll stick to my "garment guards" and continue to sweat it out.

Thanks goodness for armpits, then! :-) Good luck with your condition -- it sounds like you're doing the sensible thing.

I don't like sweating but I would find it really weird if I finished an intense workout but didn't sweat. Sweat is necessary.....it's one of the body's ways of excreting waste.

As someone who has suffered with extreme hyperhidrosis for the last 48 years, I would recommend trying something I started using 4 years ago: a drug called glycopyrrolate. Since my sweating mostly affects my head and upper torso, topical substances like Drisol are of limited use. My doctor prescribes up to 6mg per day, taken orally, although I usually take less. If taken in excess, the drug can cause extreme dry mouth, to the point where I have experienced trouble sleeping. My pharmacy has supplied this drug from two different manufacturers, and I have had the best success walking the fine line between effective sweat control and dry mouth with the oblong pills rather than the round ones. If excess sweating is ruining your life like mine had been ruined in the past, you owe it to yourself to look into this drug.

Don't do it! Sweat rids the body of all sorts of things it needs to get rid of.

And if it doesn't come out under your arms, it will come out somewhere else!

Just bathe daily and don't worry about sweating! It only stinks after you let it build up, or on unwashed clothing!

C'mon people! Every part of your body has a purpose! Some a SPECIAL purpose!

Totally true. I would never let cosmetic surgery take priority over an essential bodily function.
09:14 PM on 04/20/2011
This isn't a cosmetic procedure. Hyperhidrosis is a serious issue. I watch my daughter suffer every day. I would gladly pay to have this procedure done for her. Maybe she could have a normal life.

Your first point is correct. The rest of it may be correct for you, and most people, but not for everyone. Bathing daily doesn't save you from social embarrassment or ruining your clothes with pit stains. And the concept that "it only stinks if you let it build up" is absurd. Everyone's body chemistry is different and somewhat in flux.

Personally, I like having a built-in excuse for purchasing a new shirt or two, now and again - and a legitimate excuse is the best excuse of all!

Botox helps for that.

I have had the same issues for yrs. It is a deciding factor in which jobs I take (freelance), I have had to turn jobs down if it requires a shirt and tie since I overheat so much I sweat right through it all. Ive even had to shove napkins between myself and my undershirt to soak up some of the sweat.

Botox works for about 6-9 months. CertainDri didnt work for me, but Sweat Block wipes (found on amazon) worked for a limited time, after about a yr those too are losing its affect. Worth a try for others though. Def. thinking about the surgery though.

Stick with Botox, the surgery was a nightmare for me (I had it in San Antonio from one of the three doctors in the US performing it). I was left with massive holes in my arm, which took months to heal (during which I had limited arm movement) and now have major scars. The sweat glands "repair themselves" and, for me at least, I managed to get a year out of it. Wasn't worth it at all.

However, google "MiraDry". Its a new non-surgical method my Derm is really excited about. It uses a microwave to "zap" the glands. It was just approved by the FDA, too, so hopefully insurance will cover it.

unless you suffer from this condition, don't judge. I used to have sweat stains through my suit, down to my waist. It could be freezing and I would have huge pit stains. Thank God someone told me about Certain Dri, and it did the trick, otherwise I would have tried the surgery. Have a great day!

Same here! CertainDri is the only thing that has done it for me. I used to sweat no matter WHAT, where, the temp, etc. It was sooo embarrassing, especially as a teenager. It was *debilitating* as a teenager. I'm so glad I found CertainDri a year ago!
