Texas Wildfires: Evacuees Keep Tabs On Homes From Afar As State Burns 'Border To Border'

Texas Wildfire

MINERAL WELLS, Texas -- Since evacuating her lakeside Texas home, Jackie Fewell has turned her hotel room into the information hub for one of the state's largest wildfires, working the phones and using the Internet to get the word out to worried residents.

Fewell, her husband and several friends have been updating a blog she created about the fire around Possum Kingdom Lake, a community of mostly weekend homes about 70 miles west of Fort Worth. The fire has burned for nearly a week, tearing through several communities, consuming 150,000 acres and destroying about 150 homes and a church, according to the Texas Forest Service.

CNN quotes Texas Forest Service spokeswoman April Saginor: "We're actually seeing Texas burn from border to border. We've got it in west Texas, in east Texas, in north Texas, in south Texas -- it's all over the state. We've got one in the Dallas area that's four fires that have actually merged together."

Fewell, a partner in a real estate company, said residents have been desperate for accurate information – even sending as many as 100 emails an hour. "It's because they weren't living there to begin with full-time and they didn't know what was going on, and they were hearing these crazy reports," she said.

Armed with cellphones and laptops, Fewell and her team have been chatting with some residents who refused to evacuate, listening to a law enforcement scanner and even watching live feed from a security camera at one of the homes. By Tuesday afternoon, nearly 62,000 people had visited the blog in about 12 hours – up from about 800 visitors on a regular day.

The Possum Kingdom Lake fire is one of several massive blazes across the state that firefighters were battling Wednesday morning, adding up to more than 1 million acres of land burned in a little more than a week in drought-stricken Texas.

Firefighters were being called in from around the country to help fight the Possum Kingdom fire starting Wednesday, said Haven Cook, a spokeswoman for the Southern Area Incident Management Team. Local crews that have been fighting the fire can stay on if they choose, Cook said.

Another team dispatched by the same national agency is managing a large fire in West Texas.

The funeral for a volunteer firefighter killed last week also was set for Wednesday. Eastland firefighter Gregory M. Simmons, 50, apparently was hit by a vehicle driving through a smoky area after he had been battling a wildfire.

But weary firefighters had some reason for hope as rain and higher humidity levels were forecast for the rest of the week in parts of the state.

A 20 to 30 percent chance of rain was forecast for Wednesday and Thursday in North Texas, said Daniel Huckaby, a forecaster at the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

"Some areas will get some rainfall, but unfortunately most will not. And with the chaotic wind that thunderstorms can produce, and the lightening they can produce, that can make matters worse," Huckaby said. But as the humidity levels rise, "even without the rain, conditions are looking more positive."

The fire that started Friday in the Possum Kingdom Lake area and spread into two other counties still was raging well into Tuesday night. That's when authorities ordered the 400 residents of Palo Pinto, about 50 miles west of Fort Worth, to leave because of the advancing flames, said Trooper Gary Rozzell of the Texas Department of Public Safety. The county's jail inmates also evacuated, as did the nearby community of Graford and the small town of Strawn, south of the lake.

Several roads in the area were closed, and boating access to Possum Kingdom Lake was closed Tuesday to everyone except emergency workers responding to the wildfire. White ash was falling from the sky in several nearby towns throughout the day, and National Guard helicopters from Austin and heavy air tankers could be seen dumping water to aid ground efforts.

Fewell said her blog has kept her from worrying about her home, which she found out Tuesday was not in the path of the fire.

"We've just pushed it to the back of our heads," she said. "It is what it is, and we're all in this together."

Is it true that the Governor, Mr Perry, fired all the undocumented workers fighting the flames, just before he asked for federal funding?

He fired all American firefighters, he keep the illegals because they work for peanuts and get no benefits.

I was in Texas a couple of years back and a couple of Baptist minister said the blizzards up North were "God's way of punishing the sinners" and a lot of Texans agreed with that. Well, I guess God is punishing the sinners in Texas.

Could it be that General Sherman is back from the dead, taking care of unfinished business??? ;) ...Seriously, I do love my Texan friends!

This is not some chili cook-off BBQ contest gone wild I hope!

The fires are adding the state's outrageous deficit of $27B. Perhaps it is time to call the Obion County, Tennessee fire department for help putting out the fires.

Just think of the savings - had Texas outsourced or privatized the fire department they could have saved a whole lot of money. No guarantee of saving lives or homes doing that, but saving money is the real priority in America, right?

I remember back in the 1970's there used to be alot of oil drilling in the state of Texas but I wonder did those emptied out underground oil wells get filled up with cement? I wonder if those emptied oil wells could have been used to collect and store rain water for irrigation purpose. Sometimes Texas get alot of rain or floods and other times drought. Maybe there is some more remaining oil left to be drilled up in Texas and see if those emptied out wells can be left open with a screen over the hole to allow rainwater to fall in.

What a great idea, and really it is great, but my husband is a driller and logically your plan would not work. These holes can be 1,000 to 20,000 feet deep. And if you're thinking this could help put out the fires, well, anything would help, but with the exception of the West side of PK lake there aren't that many wells on the East of PK lake going towards Mineral Wells where the fire is headed. And in West Texas, which we are not a part of, there's not really much to burn anyway. They don't have but 3 trees in all of the Panhandle and West Texas. West Texas and the Panhandle are where the great majority of our drilling occurs.

We are people just like you. We have families, children, friends, churches and homes. Have you all forgotten that fires kill people and destroy homes and land? Are y'all even thinking about the children who have to deal with loosing everything they were used to having or live without their mother, father, grandfather, or grandmother? Have you even taken into consideration how this will affect children and people in general? The only reason y'all are making rude comments is because it isn't at your backdoor right now. You don't fear loosing your home and family. You didn't stay awake at night like my students who had to pack up their houses in the middle of the night so they wouldn't perish with the fires that were headed their way. You didn't have students or a family member who had to run from their homes and take anything that was important to them. You didn't have children who missed school for three days in a row because they were too concerned about their homes, family, pets and livestock to concentrate. You didn't have to hear rumors that some of your students' houses burned and that is why they are not at school. Get over your politics and opinions and show some compassion for people. Innocent children and adults who never asked for anything like this to happen. Who cares that we are in Texas. In the big scheme of things, does it really matter? Texans would come to your rescue.

Texas is as diverse as any other state, it's just the ones who talk the loudest drown out all the rest of us. I never voted for either Bush, nor for Reagan. The attitude may be shifting here. During W's reign, you couldn't say a bad word about him or you'd be practically stoned to death. Now most everyone's just a little embarrassed about him, so you don't hear his name much in conversation - as if everyone's wishing he never happened. There's a frontier mindset here and a misguided nostalgia, that if we could all just revert back to the old frontier ways everything would be OK again. Who was it that said, "There'll be no gentle return..."?

To the man who was running for Gov.of Texas, standing outside the Captiol building and pointed to the American Flag and shouted how he hated it and hated the United States of America too and that he wanted Texas to secede for the Union. To this man, I hope he and his family are safe and he realizes we are all Americans and we help each other and the United States abbreviated is "US". Yes it is US, together.

Hopefully some rain and humidity will ease the flames in Texas, but unfortunately we are seeing some real climate change, and can only expect more heat and drought throughout the South and Southwest, so as a nation, need to look at solutions that will ease suffering for the people in those areas.
The "solutions" will not be magical, and will only come about with governmental support and planning, as is appropriate. Now is the time for the shrill voices who condemn government, taxes, and "socialist" programs to be quiet and think about our communities and our nation, and to understand that "united we stand, divided we fall".

We want to help Texas and all citizens who find themselves in trouble. We just ask Texans do remember that our taxes and goodwill came when they were in need, so that we have no more talk of secession, of cutting taxes on the wealthy. We are one nation and when one suffers, all suffer. All of us pay something so we are all taken care of. Let the fright wing stop trying to divide the country and let us live together as one nation, with liberty and justice for all. Let us come to the aid of all who are in need right now.
