On April 20, university quads and city backstreets alike fill up with smoke in celebration of marijuana. The unofficial holiday follows Bicycle Day, which commemorates the first LSD trip in 1943. In acknowledgment of these dates and the influence of recreational drug use on the arts throughout history, the slideshow below presents works from Hirst to Dalí that were inspired or informed by the smoke, snort, shot or gulp.
