John Ensign Announces Resignation [UPDATE]

John Ensign Resigns

First Posted: 04/21/11 07:12 PM ET Updated: 06/21/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Embattled Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) confirmed Thursday night that he will resign his seat amid an ethics probe.

"It is with tremendous sadness that I officially hand over the Senate seat that I have held for eleven years," Ensign said in a statement. "The turbulence of these last few years is greatly surpassed by the incredible privilege that I feel to have been entrusted to serve the people of Nevada. I can honestly say that being a United States senator has been the honor of my life."

Ensign was under investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee and the FBI in the wake of an admitted sexual relationship with campaign aide Cindy Hampton and accusations that he tried to steer lobbying business to her husband, Doug, a former Ensign top staffer.

His resignation means the committee will not issue a report detailing his behavior.

“As is its right, the Senate Ethics Committee is continuing its investigation of issues into which it has been inquiring for the past year and a half," Ensign said. "Indeed, the committee even decided recently to devote more resources to its investigation by hiring an outside counsel even though the issues have been viewed and reviewed by so many others."

In a statement issued Thursday night, Ethics Commitee Chair Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Vice Chairman Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) wrote, “The Senate Ethics Committee has worked diligently for 22 months on this matter and will complete its work in a timely fashion. Senator Ensign has made the appropriate decision.”

Ensign's departure could clear the way for Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval (R) to appoint Rep. Dean Heller to the seat, giving the GOP an incumbent in 2012.

It also would allow Nevada Republican leaders to name their own candidate for a special election to replace Heller in a seat that covers most of the state north of Las Vegas. Such a move could marginalize Sharron Angle, the problematic Tea Party candidate who lost to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) last year.

Angle, however, has a devoted following and the ability to raise money, leaving her a potential complication for party officials.

A Democratic campaign operative was disheartened by Ensign's resignation, given that it will likely make the Democratic chances of picking off the Senate seat tougher.

But Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesman Matt Canter took a more upbeat stance, plugging Rep. Shelley Berkley (D) to succeed Ensign.

“There will be a very clear choice for Nevadans between an uncompromising extremist like Dean Heller, who wants to end Medicare and cut loans for small businesses to give more tax breaks for the very rich, and Shelley Berkley, a true fighter for Nevada’s economy and middle class,” Canter said. “Nevada will remain a top target for Senate Democrats.”

Ensign announced last month that he would not seek reelection, admitting that he had strayed.

“As I have learned through my mistake, there are consequences to sin,” he said.

When Ensign announced he would forgo a reelection bid, he said the investigation into his affairs was not a factor.

"If I was concerned about that, I would resign," he told reporters.

This story has been updated to include excerpts from Ensign's statement and the statement from Boxer and Isakson.

Too Little Time

Imagine a person who calls himself The Messiah visits and then vanishes after one week.
Whose story do you trust? NBC,CBS, RAI, Al Jazeera, CNN, Bloomberg News, a guy named Paul, France 24, Euromaxx? Now consider someone translating that story into another language after hearing it once. Push the story 2000 years ahead through many lands ,languages, wars, and many peoples. The story claims to represent truth. Now that story becomes the basis of one’s belief system. Faith, vanity, fear , and your brand of logic fuel your perspective. But we come full circle back to the question of what can we trust?

The Truth of Easter is that one does not have to denounce what one is.

Well, it took him long enough.

What ever happened to "family values" conservatives?

I think that politicians (no matter which party they belong to) have no business talking about religious values, ethics, and morality. Such topics are better left to theologians, Rabbis, Priests, Pastors, and other philosophers in our society.

A politician speaking of moral values is like a butcher writing a vegetarian cook-book.

John Ensign is a disgraceful coward. Why is he afraid to face the Senate ethics committee. Typical Republican.

The scarier thing is that the secret evangelical Fellowship Doug Coe runs (http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/09/13/100913fa_fact_boyer) has penetrated and corrupted all levels of our government.

Yesterday I commented that Ensign's real crime was cuckolding his friends wife, with emphasis on the fact that it was his friend and therefore a real issue of trust. i got one reply that said he had apologized and shold be forgiven because of al the good works he's done.

So I looked up what good things he'd done and I found a guy who seems to have a talent at marginalizing and scapegoating minorities like homosexuals and African Americans. Supposedly doing all of this on the basis of his and his constituents "RELIGIOUS BELIEFS." All the time he's spewing his religious hatred on blacks and gays/lesbians he's having sex with his best friends wife. Sounds like Focus on the Family's hypocritical gay co-founder and founder. Can't walk the walk, but are great at talking the hatred.

He's a religious and moral hypocrite. Congress is filled with them, in both parties. At this point I'd say the Democrats are slightly less hypocritical. But not be much.

Regarding African Americans, the ratio of African Americans in congress is 20-1 Democrats over Republicans. When it comes to morality and minorities Mr. Ensign is a good poster boy for the Republican Party.

The major importance of the Ensign 'affair' is the light it brought to The Family of C St.
Yet more light needs to be shed on this very secretive organization, which has been very successful at working it's way into the inner circles of power in DC. Their goals, however extend far pass the influence they seek to have over our government.

Ensign is unusual for a Republican,

1) It was a woman.

2) She was not underage.

So we should expect Senator Hopper (R) to RESIGN next, right?

Per Mrs. Hopper:

"It is correct that my husband, Randy Hopper, started an affair in January 2010 with a then-25-year-old Republican aide. This affair has caused great emotional pain for my children and me. Randy moved out, without attempting marital counseling, as of May 2010 and now lives mostly in Madison."

Hmmm, how interesting that his "official" last day of office is the day before he was to sit before the Ethics commission and answer questions.....

To think that we get to pay this disgraced man a generous retirement package and healthcare for life...and other goodies.

Someboy should make a new law about this.

had he done the right thing and quit when this came out, he would have a couple of years on his new job by now. but since he has no morals or shame, doing the right thing probably never even occurred to him.

The thing that stands out first and foremost about these Family Values Republicans is Hypocrisy. Whether it's Gringrich, Packwood, Einsign, or whoever, the all have difficulty admitting who they are. We are all Human Beings, and we understand human frailities and weeknesses. And we are a forgiving nation. There is also prescident for this. Barney Frank has consistently been reelected, all the while admitting exactly who he is, a smart, out of shape, gay, middle aged Congressman. Now that is courage. These family values guys build their reputationds on being somebody other than who they are. It's a Con Job. And their constituents keep falling for it.

Uh huh! Oh, yeah! Where are the baggers when their GOPer quits over a major sex and political scandal? After all the hate towards Charlie Rangel who stood up and took his punishment like a man! Forgetting rent checks is a little different than scrooing your best friend business partner's wife and then getting mommy and daddy to pay him off! Instead they are on the post blaming college students who can't find jobs for moving back home.
