Vince Hernandez Breaks 'Code Of Silence' In Final Moments, Accuses Friend Of Shooting Him

Dying Man Breaks 'Code Of Silence,' Accuses Fellow Gang Member

It's a fact of gang culture that frustrates law enforcement and leaves countless crimes unsolved: the code of silence, the "no-snitch rule" that demands that no one -- victims or witnesses -- talk to law enforcement about who's responsible for a crime.

But as Vince Hernandez lay on South Damen Avenue just below 47th Street in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood, bleeding to death from a gunshot wound to the head, he looked up at two cops he knew and told them who killed him.

“Hey Gus, Bob, it was one of my own f---ing boys," Hernandez said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "It was Donte."

Not long after, officers had arrested Donte Streety, allegedly a fellow member of the 2-6 street gang, for murdering Hernandez.

Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Daniel Piwowarczyk says it's unclear why Streety killed him Sunday, but that the two men were meeting in Hernandez's car when the shots were fired, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Officers continued to gather evidence against Streety, but Hernandez's statement is legally considered a "dying declaration," which means it is admissible at trial.

Streety was charged with first-degree murder, and ordered held without bail Wednesday.
