Exactly 41 years ago today, the inaugural Earth Day was celebrated with 20 million participants in the United States. Today, April 22, 2011, Earth Day is bigger than ever, with estimates of more than one billion people expected to participate worldwide.

There are a number of opportunities for you to get involved. Earth Day activities range from a picnic to attending an event or sending a text message donation. (And there are plenty more ideas below.)

By choosing to live a green lifestyle, you will not only be improving the environment, but also your health and the well-being of generations to come.

What are you doing this Earth Day? Add your activity to the slideshow below, or tweet it to us using the hashtag #EarthDayFun.

I took a break from the modern dependencies that I haven't been able to kick. Then I counted the number of electrical appliances, gadgets, and the media that has been purchased to run them all. That led me to muse on the man-made products in my home, lining my shelves, and the variety of plastics and metals we rely on everyday.

I came to the conclusion that I needed more than a day off so I took the whole weekend.

"I listened to Rush remember that the Earth Day founder killed his wife and turned her into compost."

Interesting comment, yet it has no merit, and has nothing to do with the real participants of earth day. The ones who have true merit, ethics and are honest with themselves, and the world. Such flippant comments are meant to merely dig into anothers belief of better possibilites, and cause a rift in the cause as well. I suggest to anyone with believes as this poster does, to ask themselves "What are you doing for the world?" or "What are you doing for wildlife?" or people, or the ecosystem. If you have no answer, make a choice. Because its later than you think.

I was at my workplace where I kept everything clean, separated the trash and recyclables, as my sister did at home for the trash pickup. And we're both vegans who donate. We are not perfect, but we do what we can.

On Earth Day I saw a Smart Car (while driving my Stupid Truck) and laughed so hard I almost ran off the road!

Earth Day was also Good Friday.

I meditated in my garden, pruning roses.

forget token gestures

here's something big each of us can do

become aware of the gigantic scale of farm animal slaughter
http://www.poodwaddle.com/clocks/food/

And the unforgiveably inhumane way they are raised until killed

and act....

A couple of right wingers insisted that the earth was flat, so we went cow-tipping to see if they dropped off the side of the earth.

No harm was done to the cows.

That's so touchingly eco-friendly! What a personal sacrifice on Ira Einhorn's part, killing his wife! It's for the good of Mother Gaia. His wife will no longer contribute to overpopulation, AGW, and the always-expanding list of various and sundry man-made eco-crises.

I rode my electric bike to the B&Q, got some seeds and stuff, made a nice omelet with local duck eggs, did a little garden work, watched Pawn Stars and some other things.

Just your average beautiful spring day here on planet earth.
