Glenn Beck: Mike Huckabee Is 'Thin-Skinned,' Shouldn't Run In 2012 (VIDEO)

Glenn Beck

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 04/22/11 02:17 PM ET Updated: 06/22/11 06:12 AM ET

Glenn Beck struck back at Mike Huckabee on his Friday show, calling his fellow Fox News host "thin-skinned" and maintaining his charge that the former Arkansas governor was a "progressive." He also said that Huckabee should sit out the 2012 race if he couldn't take his criticism.

The feud between the two began on Tuesday, when Beck used the term to describe Huckabee due to his support of Michelle Obama's anti-obesity initiative. Huckabee responded by attacking Beck on his website and on the radio, saying that Beck is against Obama's programs "either out of ignorance or out of a deliberate attempt to distort them to create yet another 'boogey man' hiding in the closet that he and only he can see." He also said that the term "progressive" is the same as "cancer" and "Nazi" to Beck.

On Friday, Beck weighed in at length. He took offense to both of these charges.

"The only place that I've ever heard that kind of a smear is on George Soros' website, Media Matters," Beck said, adding that he only ever claimed that Nazis used tactics favored by progressives. "Interesting how you would go to Media Matters' talking points when you feel like it would benefit you, Mr. Huckabee. I've never said progressive is the same as Nazi. So, let's not try to twist this into me accusing you of killing millions of Jews."

He then claimed that he was merely pointing out the obvious: that Obama's program is "not conservative...it's not anything that a libertarian would understand." After that, he went on a long monologue about various other "progressive" things Huckabee has done during his career. Beck concluded by turning to Huckabee's chances if he runs for the presidency again.

"If, sir, you are this thin-skinned about your politics, it might be best for you to stay on the sidelines," Beck said. "The last thing we need is someone challenging Barack Obama, not as President of the United States but challenging Barack Obama for his title as the most thin-skinned President in American history."

Beck is not a libertarian. He is a lassez-faire capitalist. The term "libertarian" was co-opted in the 70's. Look it up, Beck. Read a damn book.

Either HP or Beck made a mistake in the following paragraph. I believe he meant to say "that Huckabee's program is not conservative." Instead he substituted Obama for Huckabee.

He then claimed that he was merely pointing out the obvious: that Obama's program is "not conservative...it's not anything that a libertarian would understand." After that, he went on a long monologue about various other "progressive" things Huckabee has done during his career. I respected Glen Beck until a few of his antics caused me to question his sincerity on some issues. He can cry at the drop of a hat--talk about theatrics! Mike Huckabee is the most solid, logical candidate for 2012. He is consistent on his political stand, he is personable, he is not afraid to speak up--in other words, he is the one and only possibility for the GOP next election. I hope people will check him out before dismissing him. Read his books, Do the Right Things and A Simple Government before writing him off. I hope I get a chance to vote for Mike Huckabee.

Although I don't agree with Huckabee's politics I do agree that he is consistent and not afraid to speak up. Of the current GOP political landscape, I'd say only he and Romney are serious candidates and Romney's candidacy is plagued by RomneyCare (despite it being a good program).

Thanks for the reply. It was so nice to read something that isn't attacking someone, but just politely stating an opinion. I would be interested in knowing what part of Huckabee's politics you disagree with. You may have knowledge of some issues that I don't. I just finished reading his "Do the Right Thing" and am in the middle of "A Simple Government" and I find myself more and more convinced he's the right man. I do, however, have an open mind and am willing to listen to all sides of an issue.

He may be consistent in most of his policies, but he is absolutely two-faced in his personality. He goes on a national news network or a liberal talk show and says what they want to hear, then goes on conservative talk radio and says the opposite.

This coming from a guy who said at his march that he held the actual Declaration of Independence in his hands and cried (and lied) when he said it.

It must have been his personal "Declaration of Independence From Reality".

Glenn Beck tells people that conervatives and libertarians should, on principle, oppose a program that teaches healthy eating habits and encourages exercise.

Why does Glenn beck have such a low opinion of conservatives and libertarians?
01:57 AM on 04/28/2011
...or, clearly, healthy eating! ;)

The right is so far off the cliff, that the new definition of progressive is 'childhood nutrition Nazi'. Suddenly the last bastion of freedom has something to do with your kid eating junk food with impunity.

Even fake issues have big money behind them. Somebody... big sugar, snack food manufacturers, soda bottlers or fast food interests are funding opposition to our kids eating healthy.

Agreed.  It's simply sad that people who think they oppose the "Let's Move" initiative on principle don't realize that their opinions have been fed to them by pseudo-conservative commentators repeating whatever talking point they have been paid to make.

He then claimed that he was merely pointing out the obvious: that Obama's program is "not conservative...it's not anything that a libertarian would understand."

This all started when Mr. Huckabee supported FLOTUS' anti-obesity initiative for kids. Is this the "program" that Mr. Beck is having a hard time understanding? Encouraging children [and parents] to eat healthier and be more active is progressive - really??

I would have thought that it was just common sense. Something Mr. Beck lacks apparently.

Encouraging people to eat healthy and get exercise is not something a libertarian would understand, according to Glenn Beck.  Beck really doesn't have much regard for libertarians, does he?

Love to watch snakes devour each other-more proof beck was canned, other-wise huckabee would never attack him!

Huckabee will gain more popularity among moderates everywhere if he starts condemning the similar antics being used by almost all those claiming to be running for Republican presidential nomination candidacy. Their display has been embarrassing. Although I don't always agree with his politics, and with the exception of the single mothers statement controversy, Huckabee seems to be a genuinely decent sort of guy. At least he seems to understand that disagreeing with the President's politics is no excuse to show outright disrespect.

I won't argue the "decent guy" premise, but political ambition can put a real dent in someone's sense of decency.

Why Beck attacked Huckabee: The story behind the story

Glenn, aka, “I voted for progressive John McCain” Beck, is dishonestly and deceitfully duping people. Don’t forget, Glenn Beck is a Mormon. Mike Huckabee is a Christian. There’s that dynamic playing out here. Glenn Beck promotes himself as Christian to appeal to evangelicals and ever since the 2008 Republican primaries when a religious reporter brought up the topic of Mormonism with Huckabee and he asked one question that “thin-skinned” Beck didn’t approve of, Beck has smiled contemptuously at Huckabee for exposing the dirty little secret that he would like to brush under the rug and hope no one notices.
