St. Louis Tornado Causes Damage, Injuries At Lambert Airport

St Louis Tornado

By JIM SALTER and JIM SUHR   04/23/11 12:52 AM ET   AP

ST. LOUIS -- An apparent tornado tore through a section of St. Louis' Lambert Field on Friday, lifting the roof off a concourse, injuring several people and forcing the airport's closure.

Planes were diverted to other locations as emergency crews probed the debris for more wounded. Mayor Francis Slay said Lambert would be shut down "indefinitely."

The storm lifted the roof off Concourse C and sent plate glass flying everywhere. Four people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after glass shattered as the storm hit, airport spokesman Jeff Lea said. An unspecified number of others were treated at the scene for cuts blamed on flying glass.

"We have all hands on deck here," Slay said, noting that responders have included a cadre of workers from the city and county. "This is something we're putting a lot of attention to."

Passengers from at least two planes were stranded briefly on the Lambert tarmac because of debris but were later taken away by buses. An Air National Guard facility at the airport was reportedly damaged.

The airport's main terminal sustained the most damage. Airport director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge said roughly half of that structure's windows were blown out, sending glass and rain into that building. Elsewhere on the property, trees were toppled and power lines downed, further limiting access to the airport even hours after the storm left its destruction.

"We're fortunate we didn't have larger (numbers) of injuries," she said.

Pieces of twisted metal lay outside the terminal, the remains of a fierce line of storms that struck central and eastern Missouri. Unconfirmed tornadoes were reported in several counties in the St. Louis area, and thousands lost power.

In the suburbs of Maryland Heights and New Melle, storms caused damage to several dozen homes. There were no immediate reports of major injuries. Some playground equipment in New Melle was left in a twisted heap by the storm that also tore up roofs and ripped off siding.

Damage, possibly from a tornado, was also reported at several towns near the airport – Bridgeton, St. Ann, Ferguson and Florissant. Interstate 270 in that area was closed. Trees and power lines were down. A tractor-trailer was sitting on its end.

St. Charles County Sheriff's Lt. Craig McGuire said there were early reports of at least 20 homes damaged in the county.

"It was pretty wicked," he said.

In downtown St. Louis, Busch Stadium officials hurriedly moved Cardinals fans to a safe area as tornado sirens blared. The game with the Cincinnati Reds was delayed for hours but later resumed.

The utility company Ameren Missouri reported more than 47,000 power outages, with another 7,000 reported in Illinois.

At Lambert, installation and roofing tile was strewn about the inside and outside of one terminal. Large, plate-glass windows were blown out, at times left lying on the exterior walkways. A shuttle was teetering precariously from the top level of a parking garage.

Dianna Merrill, 43, a mail carrier from St. Louis, was at Lambert airport waiting to fly to New York with a friend for vacation. She said her flight had been delayed by weather and she was looking out a window hoping her plane would pull up. But the window suddenly exploded.

"Glass was blowing everywhere. The ceiling was falling. The glass was hitting us in the face. Hail and rain were coming in. The wind was blowing debris all over the place," she said. "It was like being in a horror movie. Grown men were crying. It was horrible."

Merrill said she felt lucky to be alive and that airport workers quickly moved people to stairwells and bathrooms to get them out of harm's way.

St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch, who was at the airport when the storm was closing in, said he saw gawkers watching the weather outside as the tornado sirens blared. Moments later, they hastily scrambled inside the building and sought shelter in a restroom.

"About the time we came into the building, the doors blew off," he said. "Literally 10 seconds later, it was over. It's amazing to me more people weren't hurt."

In Maryland Heights, a police dispatcher said a tornado hit the area, damaging homes and power lines. The dispatcher, who refused to give her name, said several officers were out dealing with reports of gas leaks and downed trees that were blocking roadways.

The department said it was unclear if there were any injuries.

The city's community center was being opened as a shelter Friday night for residents affected by the storm.

"It looks like we probably had a couple touchdowns around Maryland Heights," said Mary Vaughan, director of parks and recreation for the city. "We got some damage. I don't even know all of it."

A few residents were already at the center, and she expected more to come in later in the evening.

"We have electricity, and everything's fine," Vaughn said. "We have heat and air. We'll be here as long as we need to be."

Good thing the GOP says that climate change is a hoax. With these tornados, fires in texas, droughts elsewhere and ALL independent scientist having proof of it, i was starting to actually believe the facts.

Thank goodness that people like Pawlenty and James Inhofe have used their economics degrees to refute all of those scientists with PHDs .

Thank goodness that we have someone like Inhofe with the wisdom to speak about topics that have dire consequences to everyone on the planet and subjects he knows nothing about.

I just feel better believing in something as opposed to being bothered with all of those "Fact" things.

This "God" of which some of you speak seems to be a very poor communicator. With all his supposed powers, you'd think he'd just TELL people directly what he's so ticked off about. Instead, he causes earthquakes, tornadoes, floors, fires, and other natural disasters and expects his poor, stupid humans to figure out why he's angry. He reminds me of an ex who would just storm around the house in a sullen rage instead of talking to me. It's no way to resolve anything, and it's been going on for thousands of years. What a passive-aggressive grudge-holder.

When I see a problem that has even a 1 percent probability of occurring and is “irreversible” and potentially “catastrophic,” I buy insurance. That is what taking climate change seriously is all about.

If we prepare for climate change by building a clean-power economy, but climate change turns out to be a hoax, what would be the result? Well, during a transition period, we would have higher energy prices. But gradually we would be driving battery-powered electric cars and powering more and more of our homes and factories with wind, solar, nuclear and second-generation biofuels. We would be much less dependent on oil dictators who have drawn a bull’s-eye on our backs; our trade deficit would improve; the dollar would strengthen; and the air we breathe would be cleaner. In short, as a country, we would be stronger, more innovative and more energy independent.

There couldn't be a better time for all Missourian's to gather for a pilgrimage in the Garden of Eden south of Saint Louis in Jackson County to pray with Mitt Romney, his family and other Mormons, for better weather.

FYI: Members of the LDS church believe that the Garden of Eden was located in what is now Missouri, Jackson County.

Wilford Woodruff quoting Brigham Young (1879):
[spelling as original diary] Again Presdet [sic] Young said Joseph the Prophet told me that the garden of Eden was in Jackson Co Missouri, & when Adam was driven out of the garden of Eden He went about 40 miles to the Place which we Named Adam Ondi Ahman, & there built an Altar of Stone & offered Sacrifize [sic]. That Altar remains to this day. I saw it as Adam left it as did many others, & through all the revolutions of the world that Altar had not been disturbed

In my lifetime I have seen lazy cyclonic storms (40 years ago) change to lines of viciuos rampaging lines of storm fronts now. A sun that burns my skin when it used to be a benign warmth. You can't tell me the climate hasn't changed no matter who or what is to blame. The question is what we are going to do about it? Or just let chance rule?

Thanks to Ronald Reagan air traffice controllers are not regulated. Why are you or anyone surprised they sleep on the job?

Listen, having two controllers in a tower is not "EFFICIENT". Those union guys wanted to have 2 people in the tower at all times so they could pad the payrolls and run companies out of business.

I mean, shouldn't an air traffic controller be able to sit at a work station and stare at a graining computer screen, where each dot on the screen represents several hundred lives, for 8 hours without having to go to the bathroom, get distracted, fall asleep or get sick.

The crux of the problem is that half of the population is perfectly willing to write these events off as "acts of an awesome God". They aren't interested in facing the cause of the catastrophe, but they are fantastic making themselves feel good by helping those who are affected.

Oh please. Hollywood gave us weather disaster films with very realistic effects and now we think that whenever something happens in real life it's the beginning of The Day After Tomorrow or something like that. It's the mid-west. We have tornadoes. They sometimes hit cities and major structures.

Taking the bait! And The LIES are swallowed, hook, line and sinker ;-(

Someone had written: "When I talk about people buying or being sold 'absolute junk' I'm not only talking about the material but also about the ideological. We are 'sold' on consumerism, the wars (Iraq, Afghan), elections (the presidency), all manner of things. Unfortunately, so few people see that just because these ideas are on sale, that they don't actually have to buy them!"

Sadly, the multitudes have bought The LIES ;-(

The multitudes have taken the bait which is "ease of life", so-called, and The LIES were swallowed(believed),

hook(money),
line(politics/religion/education),
and sinker(science/technology/progress) ;-(

This place they call the u.s. of a. is the "bait"master and they catch their "fish" in every nation of this world ;-( Yet in england, france, germany, japan, etc, in all nations of this wicked world there are those who have become disciples of the "bait"master and they also have found other "waters" in which to catch their "fish" ;-(

And so it is that today there are multitudes in every nation under the sun that have taken the bait(ease of life),and swallowed(believed in) the hook(money),the line(politics/religion/education)and the sinker(science/technology/progress) ;-(

Tempted, hooked, reeled in,and held captive as they but serve "time" in the prison that is this wicked world ;-(

They could not withstand the media blitz(krieg) and their "imag"ination got the best of them ;-(

Since the five hurricanes hit Florida in 2004, I have prophesied every increase in the magnitude of weather and other phenomena, from one level to the next. I sent them to Rick Sanchez (former anchor CNN Atlanta), and Jimmy Carter. God has shown me how the media can post racist vitriol, a pastor that burns Korans, and unending violence. However, it can't hear His servant saying: He is tired of racism and violence. This is why He is saying that America does not know Him. He is also saying that He has blessed America with a lot; To whom much is given, much is expected. Yet, it seeks to take Him out of everything. As such, He is saying that there shall be a great cry! You have not seen anything yet.

Everyon knows that you are missing a huge point.

Debate on the science of climate change is to be welcomed. However, some (but not all) climate-change contrarians lace their arguments with sarcasm, innuendo and snide remarks, and question the honesty and integrity of any climate scientist who argues that global warming is detrimental to human welfare.

I was reading some info on Tucson AZ teabaggers and found a reference to Tea Party in Missouri. Looking at their website and reading posts from members and wanna be members, it struck me in this way:

Accoding to Gov Nixon, inspite of overwhelming damage and destruction, there were NO deaths and only 5 known injuries. He attributed that "miracle" (his words) to their tornado early warning system, which is state of the art. It provided 35 minutes for folks to take precautions.

Wonder what the baggers think about that "government spending".

Then, the Gov. said FEMA would coming in with others from DC to "assess damage" and figure out how much MO will need to repair the damage.

Wonder what the MO baggers think about that "government spending"..

This is the 2nd time the big bad FEDERAL GOVERNMENT has been called upon to assist the state. Last was in January after several counties were crushed by storms.

Wonder what the MO........weill, you know the rest.

Any Missouri baggers reading this?

If so, care to comment?

I lived in some apartments across the street from Lambert. I used to jump on the Metrolink to go from there to the Loop.
