Karl Lagerfeld On His Hair, Women In Thongs & The Last Time He Cried

Karl Lagerfeld

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 04/25/11 06:24 PM ET Updated: 06/25/11 06:12 AM ET

W Editors' Blog recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Kaiser Karl Lagerfeld to talk about everything from his new endeavors with ice cream to why he still uses a facsimile machine to who he thinks should take over at Dior.

Check out our favorite Qs and As from the discussion below and do please head over to WMagazine.com to read the rest.

Do you ever take vacations? I’m not an employee who goes to the office every morning at the same time. Then, vacations are needed. I’m like a rock singer with one-night stands on the road[....]I don’t do meetings. At Chanel, there are no meetings. At Chanel, we do what we want, whenever we want and it works. And Fendi is the same.

Do you ever think about cutting your hair?
No, because I’m afraid it won’t grow again. And I’m not very gifted for hairdos. This is the quickest thing in the world. It takes less than five seconds.

Do you do it yourself?
No, I have someone who comes to the house and washes it, puts in the dry shampoo, and takes care if it because I have no time. I don’t even have time to go to the dentist. I’m busy but in a pleasant way. I’m the one who wanted to do all of it, so I can’t complain.

Is there one thing that you don’t like a woman to wear?
I’m not mad for thongs.

When was the last time you cried?
I’m trying to think of the last time I had onions.

Actually the last time he cried is when his hair servant accidentally got shampoo in his eye - the rich are different.

What did you think of Karl Lagerfeld for Magnum? Yikes, eek, or all of the above? http://bit.ly/fx28WZ

He has impeccable style. This is the way black should be worn. Unfortunately during the red carpet you would never see anyone wearing black this way.

His hair style looks fine he just needs less drama in presenting it. If at 78 he still has hair, he should wear it the way he wants and not listen to opinion of those who get their hairstyle ideas by looking at the pictures of "some" pop stars.

IDK what is he referring to underwear or flip flops, but both are very unflattering and should be avoided, especially when you plan on sitting down at a bar stool - nobody cares seeing a "whale tail".

He doesn't have enough time to wash his hair? Is he joking or was that a serious comment? I don't want to call him ridiculous if I'm reading out of context, but, this guy is ridiculous. He barely looks real, more like a Madame Teussaus's wax statue.

I'm sure your opinion will have him in tears.
He does joke in many interviews, I suspect. A more playful sort than he looks.

How can a guy who is an icon in the fashion world be cool with wearing the same outfit all the time?? I don't follow him, but when I see him, he's got on the black with the dark shades...

If you look at most designers they have a uniform. They have a look that is their signature and is uniquely theirs- from Coco Chanel to Yves Saint Laurent.

Just because he makes products for people without an own personal taste or style or opinion about fashion (people who need others to tell them what to like or to wear every season), doesn't mean he has to be one of them.

Question:
when he says 'thongs', does he mean the footwear or the panties???

Karl Lagerfeld is 78, and still living life his way. Good for him. It takes some audacity to ignore public opinion and dress like a rock star when you grew up before anyone heard of the Beetles. Keep going, Karl.

And what does that have to do with fashion dear? I agree she's not that great of an actress but she has great style. Which is what Mr. Lagerfeld care about.

He uses dry shampoo? Is his hair ever washed with water? Looks like it would dissolve with water.
