CNN's Gary Tuchman On Birthers: 'Not One Iota Of Evidence' (VIDEO)

Gary Tuchman

CNN's Gary Tuchman says that the reason he likes his job is that his only mission is to get the facts. If that's the case, the latest assignment for the "Anderson Cooper 360" correspondent must have been a breeze: to debunk the myth, once and for all, that Barack Obama was not born in the United States.

CNN sent Tuchman to Hawaii, and the first part of his investigation aired on Monday's "AC 360." (The second will air on Tuesday night.) While there, he spoke to several former and current government officials, including the state's current governor, Neil Abercrombie. One of Hawaii's former top health officials--a Republican named Chiyome Fukino--told Tuchman that she has personally seen Obama's original birth certificate. What's more, Tuchman found that the certificate of live birth that Obama released many years ago is beyond sufficient to determine his Hawaiian heritage: it's actually the only acceptable form of birth certificate in the state anymore.

"We have not seen one iota of credible evidence that he was born outside of the United States," Tuchman told The Huffington Post in an interview Tuesday. He said that the "speculation" and "innuendo" of birthers such as Donald Trump was completely baseless. He also said that his investigation turned up things that "even Barack Obama" might not have known. For instance, a woman who gave birth thirteen hours after Obama's mother told CNN that she thinks she saw Obama in the hospital's nursery.

The case, it would seem, is closed. But then, it's been closed pretty much ever since the issue was raised years ago. Why reopen this door? Tuchman said that, in the current political climate, and with polls showing that a substantial number of people still say they doubt that Obama was born in the U.S., the time seemed right to produce "the final story for open minded people."

Of course, the point of many conspiracy theories is that evidence doesn't do much to convince people who believe them. Indeed, on the same night that Tuchman's investigation ran, Donald Trump was stating, yet again, that he has serious concerns about Obama's citizenship. (Trump introduced a new theory to Anderson Cooper: that the birth certificate is missing.)

Tuchman said that he "can't quite figure out" why Trump has become such a zealous birther. "If it's not [political] opportunism I don't know what it is," he said, adding that someone who trafficked so "casually" in such ideas "sounds like someone who isn't serious about leading this nation."

He said that the government officials in Hawaii--in particular Fukino--shared his frustration about the persistence and durability of the birther myth. "They're serious people, and the evidence shows that this is an unserious argument," he said.

If Tuchman's investigation fully eschews the notion of "balance" to the story of Obama's citizenship, there is still a question of whether it is right to give the story any attention at all. Mightn't it be better not to give the birthers, as wrong as they are, any oxygen?

Tuchman said that people who are both pro and anti-birther have asked him, "why are you doing this story?" But he stressed that his job was only to find out what was factually accurate. "If it's relevant to our viewers, our job is to report it," he said. "This is a big issue, whether you like it or not."

The second part of Tuchman's investigation airs on Tuesday's "Anderson Cooper 360" at 10 PM ET. Watch the first part below.

It is becoming quite obvious that an overwhelming majority see through this sideshow of a "man"with an ego and a mouth bigger than the USA. It really tickles me pink that my fellow Americans are quite intelligent! Keep up the good work guys...weed out the nutcases. Oh, and I am talking about "THE DUMPER"

Let's face it, if people can't believe what is staring them boldly in the face ( the FACTS about the BC), then they must be of very low intelligence, mentally ill, sheep, or just plain racist. Not attacking any one person, just people as a whole. It is like saying the sky is green when it is clearly blue. Regardless of what political affiliation one adhere's to.

Why should the border states have to put up with illegals, anyway? Northern states aren't facing the crime, disease, overcrowded schools, overcrowded jails, and hospital bankruptcies that border states face, and yet keep voting to allow illegals to run rampant in those states. The Federal government owes border states billions for dealing with illegals since after the 1986 amnesty and they haven't paid up yet.

In light of all of these Non-Trump stories that have popped up online today, I would be willing to believe that the "Obama camp" cooked up all of this crap as a means to discredit Trumps' sudden rise within the ranks of current Political Heroes. Obama knows his re-election is in trouble.

Some friends of mine on disto lists have still been sending around 'birther' information, declaring that Obama's birth certificate is a fake, backed with various declarations which actually sound quite convincing. One even sent a link to a YouTube presentation on the subject. I hope that someone who was born in the same hospital as Obama, and roughly around the same time, steps forward and presents a copy of their birth certificate to put any scattered grumblings to rest once and for all. It upsets me that Obama didn't set the matter to rest immediately, before it turned into a national issue. We certainly do not need any credibility problems at this time.

Gearhead, each one of your 9 points is silly and untrue. You only wish they were true, . Obama is doing a good job of pulling us out from under the failed policies and debt piling of Reagan, Bush1, & especially Bush2.

The big problem I have with this whole situation is the time elapsed between when the questions about Obama's birth certificate first arose and when he finally produced one. I had to get a certified copy of my birth certificate as a required for a new security measure when I worked for a NASA contractor. It cost me $45, and it took about ten working days to reach the house. Obama NEVER should have let the issue get so out of hand, when the question could have so easily been answered. I first thought it was just "sour grapes" on the part of the Republicans when I first started hearing questions about Obama's birth certificate, but since he didn't produce one, things started looking very suspicious to me. In fact, the whole "birther" movement was based on peoples' suspicions about that very subject. Obama and his followers had no right to mock "birthers" while not providing necessary information to quell the peoples' suspicions. I am also disgusted that Obama's birth certificate was not produced when high-ranking military personnel started demanding that it be produced, and ended up being court-martialed as a result. Citizens have a right and a responsibility to ensure that our elected officials follow our laws and our Constitution; and elected officials have a responsibility to ensure that the questions of the people are answered.

You seem o be laboring under a mistaken impression that President Obama only recently released his birth certificate.

The document he gained special dispensation to get access to recently is *not* the gold standard fully legally valid document. That was the COLB that he released 3 years ago.

Any reponsibility for things getting 'out of hand' lies with the Republican leadership who winked at birther over the following 3 years, even AFTER their own party colleagues vouched for the COLB and his birth in Hawaii.

As to the former officer:

Lakin went to prison because he disobeyed legitimate orders, and for *no* other reason.

Did you know he following:

Lakin took his pre-deployment leave knowing he wasn't going to deploy?

He was counselled time & time again his orders were legitimate by a MoH winner (his Brigade Commander)?

The Medic chosen at short notice to replace him out of rotation ws not able to take pre-deployment leave, & missed his wife's bronze star award ceremony?

One of Lakin's kids was born in Hawaii, and he couldn't get a 'long form' for her?

The replacement medic testified he was ill prepared, and facing mass casualties in AG a few days after arriving, said the short notice adversly affected his ability to tend the injured?

Lakin admitted under oath in excruciating detail that he knew his orders were legal at the time he disobeyed them, but disobeyed them anyway?

It's sad and strange at the same time that people who are not citizens seem to understand our constitution better than a lot of posters. Pregnant women cross the United States/Mexican border quite often to deliver the child in San Yisidero, California and other United States border towns to make sure their child will be a natual born United States citizens. Just this month (April, 2011) a ring of Chinese pregnant women were doing the same thing in Southern California. Children born in a foreign country have a right to U S Citizenship if at least one parent is a United States citizen and must be registered at the Embassy. Being on or off base has no bearing. Children born of non-U S Citizen parents are also U S citizens if they are born on embassy grounds. Children born in Guam, American Somoa, Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico are U S Citizens, but not Natual born citizens. The last embassy I was posted to was in Bangkok, Thailand on Wireless road. I lived a block away at 93/4 Soi Laung Suuang. About 5 or 7 times a year a non-U S child would born on the embassy compound.

Actually, the fourteenth amendment does not provide for the "birth tourism" mess - it was meant to give full citizenship to slaves and their children. It was a stupid Supreme Court decision which stated that people who were born on our soil, even if children of illegal aliens, could end up being citizens. I think it's time for the Supreme Court to reverse that decision; it just invites people to come here illegally. Then, if they get deported, they cry how the US is "breaking apart families" - which is not the truth, they can always take their kids back with them when they go, as they never should have been here illegally in the first place.

I posted a very sensible, truthful comment here, some 2 1/2 hours ago, very clean and clear, with good vocabulary, and it has not been posted, while various unfounded comments do get posted, some containing foul and crazy language, etc., senseless, and with no particular direction or purpose. Praise God He's on His throne, controlling the direction of our Beloved Nation, and not certain people. (2 Chronicles 7:14).

The Republicans obviously believe in the old addage if you tell a big lie enough times (and loudly enough) people will believe it. Actually, not real people, just the wing nuts. If they didn't have the lies, they wouldn't have anything to say; just no substance there at all!

From what I understand, Obama was the only candidate running in 2008 that had not provided a birth certificate prior to campaigning. Even after Hillary Clinton requested the birth certificate-----he stalled and later refused to provide the document. Adding to the suspician, Obama spent 1.6 million dollars in legal fees to seal the documents. Why ??? The birth certificate has become such an issue mainly because of all the mystery and suspician for not providing the required document prior to campaigning. He was the only one that was not forthcoming which sparked concern and even more suspicians. If Obama had of provided a birth certificate when he should have---this would not be an issue. But then the "racist card" was pulled on several occasions which became a distraction and then they backed off with the birth certificate request. Finally, Obama produced the birth certificate and eveyone is happy. Obama brought this on himself. Now, let's move on.

Your understanding is flawed. No one is allowed to run for president without proof of eligibility. The short form birth certificate was all the proof anyone has ever needed to prove citizenship if born in the U.S., the Fox talking heads have just lead weak-minded people to believe otherwise. If you apply for your birth certificate the short form is what you will receive, unless you specify you want the long form, and it would be solid proof of U.S. citizenship.

I think the problem is, why are they questioning whether he was born in the US? He received a passport stating he is a U.S. citizen, he's voted in the U.S. stating he is a U.S. citizen and we all know you can only become a President if you are a natural born citizen of the U.S. He received the same birth certificate that other states received, even myself when I lost mine. So what's the big deal, because his dad was African from Kenya and his mom was white? I'm 60 years old and I haven't heard of anyone becoming President here in the U.S. that was questioned about their birth certificate, afterall the majority of whites here parents or grandparents aren't from the U.S. I myself have Russian immigrants as inlaws. It just shows how the rules change for some folks!

Dumpy is not going to run for Pres., he actually does not want Obama to be re-elected because he might have to pay taxes on his inherited moola. Greedy Greedy. If he is so great and rich why does he not give away some his fortune to help the needy. Novel idea. Duh. Guess he never thought of that. You can't take it with you.
