Facebook Deals Tips: 11 Things You Need To Know

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 04/26/11 05:41 PM ET   Updated: 06/26/11 06:12 AM ET

The daily and social deals space is getting hotter everyday -- Google launched Offers just last week -- and Facebook showed up early this morning with a serious offering that could shift the tech world's intense focus away from industry darling Groupon.

Facebook Deals is noticeably different from competitors like Gilt, Groupon and LivingSocial, so click on to see what sets it apart, how to find deals, adjust your notifications, and why the News Feed is so important.

What do you think of Facebook Deals? Have you purchased one yet? Let us know in the comments!

You Can't Find It Everywhere

While many are claiming Facebook Deals is a game changer at launch, remember: it's only launching as a test program today in Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco. It's got a long way to go before having the reach of Groupon's 500 markets.

12. Facebook is over rated. Please quit giving it attention. Just like AOL, MySpace, Orkut etc....it will be old news *looks at calendar*....1 year.

I have tried the so called deals on facebook. Most of them only lead to lots of spam delivered to your mailbox. I am sure there are some legitimate deals on Facebook, however I have not encountered one. They start out boasting of free gifts which are used to garner your participation requiring you name, address and or email. Incredibly you must make a purchase ( magazines, shoes, insurance etc) of some sort to receive this gift which never arrives. Yet, your mailbox is loaded with spam from third parties and the invasion of privacy has only just begun.

I H8 Facebook. I have for a while now. Been there, was abused by that. Over it. Facebook is a nonentity, too bad so many of my friends manage their whole social lives via it though... maybe its time to find friends who don't do facebook?

Well said. I haven't talked to some of my good friends for some time because they usually just talk amongst each other on Facebook. Then when we all finally meet up they just talk about wall postings or things that happened on facebook. It's getting ridiculous. Take me back to the 70s please!

Account Setting>Notifications>Deals (towards the bottom of the page). Just uncheck everything.

But realize that they will turn it back on...probably in a few weeks time. I've posted some screen shots on my page showing where Facebook opted me back IN to receive email notifications of various services, statuses, etc. after I repeatedly unchecked the email notifications box.

It's the worst business practice of FB in my opinion. I don't mind ads. I don't even mind if they say, 'for this free service, you must get our email' just don't be sneaky, break into my settings, and change them to receive spam.

You almost can't afford to not be a member. Every site almost requires you to logon FB. I am most concerned with how they gather info and know exactly what your interests are.
