Pennsylvania Fracking Spill Investigated By State Officials, EPA

04/26/11 01:13 AM ET   AP

CANTON, Pa. -- Workers replaced a damaged portion of a natural gas well Monday night that had spilled thousands of gallons of chemical-laced water into fields and a stream last week, the well's owner said, and officials said early tests show the spill had little effect on the environment but an investigation is continuing.

Also Monday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that it has directed the well owner, Chesapeake Energy Corp., to give information by Tuesday about the discharge, including details on the fluids used in the drilling process, as well as the effects on water, land and air, and any soil sampling data collected in the area before and after the spill.

Such requests are a common fact-finding tool, an EPA spokesman told the Patriot-News of Harrisburg, but this is apparently the first time the agency has made them for the Marcellus Shale, the newspaper reported.

By May 9, federal officials said, they also want to know about the history of drilling at the site, any permits or standards that may have been violated, and whether the well generated any radiological compounds.

"We want a complete accounting of operations at the site to determine our next steps in this incident and to help prevent future releases of this kind," EPA Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin said in a statement.

State officials are leading the investigation into what caused Tuesday's equipment failure and the resulting two-day spill.

Chesapeake, which was drilling the Marcellus Shale well in Leroy Township, said in a statement that specialists replaced the damaged wellhead, thus bringing the well under control.

Brian Grove, senior director of corporate development for Chesapeake, told the Patriot-News that a full investigation would be done "to determine the root cause of the failure, evaluate best management practices and make any and all necessary corrections before returning to normal operations."

Results of tests on water samples taken by the state environmental protection department are expected this week, but an agency spokesman said last week that field checks found no cause for concern.

The Marcellus Shale formation lies primarily beneath Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia and Ohio, with Pennsylvania as the center of activity. More than 2,000 wells were drilled in the state in the past three years and many thousands more are planned.

Drilling a Marcellus Shale well involves pumping millions of gallons of water and sand laced with chemicals down the well bore at high pressure to break up the dense shale rock more than a mile beneath the surface and release the gas trapped inside. The process is known as hydraulic fracturing. Some of that chemical-laced water returns to the surface as a briny stew carrying sulfates, chlorides, metals and naturally occurring radioactivity that the wastewater picks up deep underground.

DEP spokesman Dan Spadoni said last week that the agency had taken water samples from Towanda Creek and a tributary to screen for chlorides, sulfates, arsenic, barium, iron, magnesium and strontium. The DEP also took samples from seven nearby private wells and from the Susquehanna River where Towanda Creek empties into it, about 16 miles from the wells, he said.

Checking it out is a joke. Why didn't we have safety laws in effect to prevent such a spill. Our State EPA is just as much at fault. Drilling should be shut down until safety issues are addressed.

Keep doing what you're doing, what is the worst that could possibly happen? Polluted aquifers, destroyed AG land, dying forests from chemical seep, increased cancers and birth defects all around, burning water, poison air, shortened life spans for residents and their progeny that make it through birth, nature dying, innocent animals dying by multitudes....

Give the nation a congress that is not conflicted between their love for money above all else and stand on a decent Principle to protect The People that he is sent to office to represent!

This is as insidious a practice as it gets. The movie GASLAND brought it to our attention and we have Josh Fox, the filmaker to thank for this. We can also un-thank Cheney and his Halliburton for passing the law so that EPA could not regulate, NOR did they have to disclose what chemicals were being used.

Not only do the chemicals pollute the water table and drinking water it eventually ruins the land so it may not ever be farmable. There is also some suspicion that undermining the solid ground, MAY be responsible for earthquakes in the areas.

Someone mentioned that gas is cleaner than other fossil fuel, yes when we burn it, but the extraction of all fossil fuels is dangerous to all of us and even the people that work in these fields.

The solution is not even regulation, (although at this stage it is a must), the solution is to STOP FRACKING and to DEMAND with everything we've got to DEVELOP RENEWABLE energy.
The fossil companies have spent billions of dollars propagandizing that we can't do without them, they've even sent your sons and daughters to go to foreign lands and get killed and maimed to protect their filthy profits.

There is an effort right now by some of environmental orgs like democracyforamerica.org & others (go there and sign the petition), to get Congress to demand that the EPA regulate and make the offenders tell us what chemical they are using.

Let's be honest - we need natural gas. Not only is it considerably cleaner than any of the other fossil fuels, but it's also readily available domestically. In fact, 97 percent of the natural gas used in the United States is produced in North America. As such, it represents a fuel source that we have the ability to control and refrain from exporting wealth to oil producing countries, given its ability to act as a fuel for autos. Recent studies have shown that there is enough domestic natural gas to supply the nation's needs for the next 110 years, thanks to shale formations being economical as a result of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. With this being said, necessity is not an excuse for producing from shale formations irresponsibly. In light significant heat, many gas drillers have disclosed the contents their fracking mixes. While this can quench some concerns, further efforts are necessary to develop clean fracking mixes and determine methods for storing wastewater from drill sites. Rather than sit back and wait to possibly become the on-shore BP, gas drillers can gain much public confidence by stepping up and working with the government to develop proper safeguards that ensure natural gas is developed in as environmentally friendly manner as possible.

Hey, are you a commercial for the fracking industry?

Sounds like something written by an ad man...
09:58 AM on 04/30/2011
Not at all. You should probably read my whole comment...notably where I urge gas drillers to do more than just disclose their fracking mixes and work with the government to develop regulations that will alter both the substance of the fracking fluids and the process.

When will the government crack down on oil companies like this one? Everyone in the industry jokes that it's an Enron in the making (look at its balance sheet). Just like everyone knew that BP was a train wreck waiting to happen. Texas City Refinery (twice), Alaska Pipeline Leak, Thunder Horse almost sinking. Deepwater Horizon was inevitable.

Now these jokers? Please pull this Chesapeake train over before they crash into a town and kill a bunch of people! Except there will be no reparations, just bankruptcy.

Sounds like more than weak arguments going on there to me. I don't want to drink radioactive elements or flaming water. And now there was that spill getting into the water.

"The process is known as hydraulic fracturing. Some of that chemical-laced water returns to the surface as a briny stew carrying sulfates, chlorides, metals and naturally occurring radioactivity that the wastewater picks up deep underground."

Why dont you explain how this happens and how it can enter the groundwater. Why dont you also explain how this could happen and not have either the hydrocarbons or the naturally occuring saltwater contaminate the fresh ground water.

Both the hydrocarbons and the saltwater are vastly more toxic to the groundwater and are in quantities massively greater the than the fracturing fluids.

We know your complaints about the dangers of hydraulic fracturing are weak especially since you are complaining about the least toxic item in the process and by item which is miniscule in quantity compared to the salrwater and the hydrocarbons.

We should stop all this drilling. I don't need cheaper heat next winter. I don't need cheaper gas. I don't care how much it costs I just want these evil drillers to stop ruining the land and I'm willing to have my bills triple in the next five years.

If enough environmentalist stop using natural gas and electricity there would be no demand for natural gas obtained from fracking. Fracking is more expensive than just drilling a hole!

So stop the consumption and stop being hypocrites!

In England they do it with 3 chemicals, are up front about what goes in the ground and stays there, no noise pollution, and seemingly are doing it a lot safer and cleaner. WHY oh WHY do we have to do everything so difficult, secret and down right polluting here? We seem to care more about lobbying congress to shield us so we can pollute away, rather than take the necessary steps to do a good clean job that leaves as little side effect as possible. SIGH!

I'm tired of my head spinning! We don't need all these chemicals in everything. I want an earth that not only lives but flourishes. I don't want our water to be polluted beyond natures ability to keep up with polluters. Please everyone watch Gasland. Then do your own research. Don't just believe the propaganda from the gas and oil companies.

Richard J. Allan, a scrap recycler, has been chosen by Corbett to be sec.of the Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources. Is it prudent to appoint a polluter to be in charge of 117 state parks? Will Allan manage the 2.1 million acres of state forest land for the overall good of the commonwealth, or for the profits of the 'no-tax paid' natural gas industry? He's looking for additional ways to drill on state owned lands. This doesn't bode well with nature enthusiasts, hunters, and fishermen.

Who needs public oversight? Let them do whatever they want. The free market will take care of it. People won't buy gas from companies that commit crimes, isn't that the theory? It will all just work out for everyone's best interests.

Yes, I'm being sarcastic. Pretty sad that I even need to point that out, but our declining education system has left the vast majority of our population entirely incapable of critical thought, so...
