Jon Stewart Rips Provision That Would Require Zadroga Beneficiaries To Be Checked Against Terrorist Watchlist

Stewart Zadroga

In 2010, "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart committed himself fully to advocating for the passage of the Zadroga Bill, a measure that would "provide $7 billion in benefits for those who first responded on 9/11 and are now experiencing subsequent health problems such as cancer and respiratory disease," that had somehow stalled in Congress. He dedicated the entirety of his final show of the year to the topic. The White House all but admitted that their bully pulpit wasn't as influential as Stewart's. And when the bill finally made it into law, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) -- a firm champion of the bill herself -- came to the Daily Show to personally thank Stewart for his efforts.

All seemed fine. But let's flash forward to last week, and check in with our own Michael McAuliff:

A provision in the new 9/11 health bill may be adding insult to injury for people who fell sick after their service in the aftermath of the 2001 Al Qaeda attacks, The Huffington Post has learned.

The tens of thousands of cops, firefighters, construction workers and others who survived the worst terrorist assault in U.S. history and risked their lives in its wake will soon be informed that their names must be run through the FBI’s terrorism watch list, according to a letter obtained by HuffPost.

As you might imagine, this wasn't the sort of thing that Stewart would let slide. And on Tuesday night's "Daily Show" -- in an angry, searing, hilarious outburst -- he pulled out the long knives and sunk them deep, excoriating the lawmakers for delivering "one final kick in the nuts" to first responders, and going so far as to elucidate, via "chalkboard," the essential 'Glenn Beckening' of their thought process.

Along the way, Stewart pointed out some -- shall we say -- idiotic inconsistencies:

STEWART: You want 9/11 responders to know that before they get their chemo money, for the cancer they got sifting through World Trade Center rubble, in the hopes of identifying those we lost in the attack, you have just one last, tiny loose end to tie up: we just have to make sure you're not a terrorist. Actually, you know who else has to go through that type of check to get their money? Nobody. Not for Medicare, not for Medicaid, not for Social Security, not farm subsidies, not oil subsidies, not FEMA disaster money. Though if your name is Katrina, they have to verify that you're not a hurricane.

"You want billions in bailout money?" Stewart added. "You get that without getting cross-checked against the terrorist watchlist. The only thing they want to know in that case is: did you start the financial meltdown in the first place. Because if you did, here's your f***ing money."

Exactly.

"Did you cause the financial meltdown in the first place? If you did, HERE'S YOUR F**KING MONEY!"

That is true on so many levels. God that guy makes me crack up

Great work Jon. Invaluable I say. How ridiculous our lawmakers have become like the lady saying that minorities do not work hard, WTF. Can you believe it?

Science is the belief in ignorance of "experts"

It's completely racist to even discuss this subject. Islam has only 100% peaceful intent towards USA. Our friends in the Muslim Brotherhood have already worked out how they can be "closer" to their friends in America.

Understanding the Role of the Muslim Brotherhood in North America

The process of settlement is a "Civilization-Jihadist Process" and all the word means. The
Ikhwan [Arabic for brothers] must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad to eliminate and destroy the Western civilization from within, and sabotage its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers, so that it is eliminated, and God's religion is made victorious over all other religions.
Without this level of understanding, we are not up to the challenge and have not yet prepared ourselves for Jihad. It is a Muslim's destiny to perform Jihad and work wherever he is and wherever he lands until the final hour comes, and there is no escape from that destiny except for those who choose to slack. But, would the slackers and the Mujahedeen be equal.

Excellent, Jon! I've started taping your show because there is more of your commentary than what is usually shown on these clips. But I'm grateful for the clips in case I miss taping a show or just want to re-watch it.
Thank you for STILL standing up for our 9/11 responders!

Actually, Stewart is wrong on this one. Completely.
The rider in the bill is meant to put a control on the thousands and thousands of "general public" who will also makes claims for compensation. These masses will far outweigh the first responders who actually did the work of cleanup and rescue.
The reason first responders were not excluded from the "cross check to the terror watch list" is because political correctness once again has shoved itself to the fore...you cannot profile the public and not the first responders lest the bill seems "rac'ist". You should have heard the debates behind closed doors about this...but you never will. Who has time?

Jon needs to consult with me next time before he oversteps his comedic license. :-)

I think you missed one point here and please feel free to educate me where I am wrong. Such riders do no exist for other claims: "Not for Medicare, not for Medicaid, not for Social Security, not farm subsidies, not oil subsidies, not FEMA disaster money."

It seems like proving that you are a first responder would be a simple matter of providing the right identification.

I expect this sort of foolishness from republicans in Florida. The State that still can't outlaw beastiality. It's when Democrats go along with them that I get annoyed. I mean Is stupidity really contagious? Do we need to filter the air between the two groups?

now I have this picture of someone terribly horny trying to bed a gator.
Heck...no wonder it's still legal. My guess is they take short term bets when it occurs.
Which comes first (oops...)
The guy or the gator's dinner?

Man, I haven't seen Jon this angry in a while. Hopefully him raising the awareness of this will get those who approved this provisions feet held to the coals; hopefully my fellow Floridans will vote Stearns out of office in 2012.

Once again, Jon Stewart proves that he and Stephen Colbert are two of the very few real journalists practicing their craft in this country!

Thank you, Jon for showing us that real journalism isn't dead (yet!) in the USA!

When Jon Stewart was first starting out, he had the good fortune to interview George Carlin, who said to him on national TV, "Keep going, you're going to show us something."

Is there anything at all George was wrong about?
