Long Island Serial Killer Investigation: Dormer To Step Down As Police Commissioner [UPDATE]

Top Cop Stepping Down After Mishandling L.I. Serial Killer Case [UPDATE]

UPDATE: CBS News says Steve Levy adamantly denies the New York Post's story. From CBS:

“This story, it was made up. There’s no truth to it,” said Levy. ”Dormer has done a terrific job. I am not unhappy with the police commissioner in any way.”
“There’s a source, an unnamed source. This could be some guy from the PBA stirring up stuff that he read on a blog and the next thing you know, it’s an article in a major newspaper. What a disgrace this is,” Levy said of the Post’s reporting. “To say that I’m going to be firing my own commissioner without any substantiation whatsoever is horrendous journalism.”

The New York Post has not changed the article nor responded to Levy's comments on their website.

ORIGINAL POST: Richard Dormer will step down as Suffolk County police commissioner for his mishandling of the Long Island serial killer investigation, according to the New York Post.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy is furious with Police Commissioner Richard Dormer for publicly releasing crucial details of the investigation that only the murderer would know, a police source said.

The 'crucial details' in question emerged last week when it was revealed authorities were piecing together a profile of the serial killer after finding the remains of up to 10 bodies along beaches on the Suffolk and Nassau South Shore.

He is most likely a white male in his mid-20s to mid-40s. He is married or has a girlfriend. He is well educated and well spoken. He is financially secure, has a job and owns an expensive car or truck. He may have sought treatment at a hospital for poison ivy infection. As part of his job or interests, he has access to, or a stockpile of, burlap sacks.

Levy released a statement saying Dormer was the best police commissioner in the history of Suffolk County and Levy's spokesman added that Levy had not in fact asked Dormer to step down, according to the Post.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the murders of up to 10 people, many of them prostitutes, presses on. Authorities searched a wildlife sanctuary near Tobay Beach on Friday and Suffolk County police sent divers into the water, both in effort to find more remains.

The FBI has done everything from examining a Brooklyn pimp's computer to flying "both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft equipped with special cameras that will scour more than 15 miles of the Ocean Parkway along a remote barrier island south of Long Island in search of additional victims." The Post reports that some of these photographs from the FBI's search will be made available to local authorities this week.
