Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium Survives Tornado (VIDEO)

First Posted: 04/28/11 09:05 AM ET Updated: 06/28/11 06:12 AM ET

Clay Hasenfuss of Tuscaloosa, Ala took a shocking video on Tuesday of a massive tornado just barely missing Bryant-Denny Stadium by 250 yards. Severe storms continued to rip through the South on Wednesday, wiping out several homes and businesses in the process. The death toll in Alabama reportedly reached 128 and 32 in Mississippi. Somehow, Alabama's football stadium survived the storms.

And God so loved the world he saved the Alabama football stadium.

Football must go on in Alabama regardless.

I want to think that at the last moment, a mighty growl from above from Bear Bryant changed the barometric pressure and detoured the tornado from destroying this hallowed place...The UK Wildcat Nation send prayers and concern-- Stay strong Tide.

At one point in the clip, you can see huge trees being sucked straight up and disappearing into the funnel.

I've lived through several major hurricanes, but a tornado like that just scares me witless.

I grew up smack in the middle of "Toranado Alley" and never saw one, although a small Oklahoma town only about 15 miles away was completely destroyed by one. Whenever a thunderstorm would come up, a group of us kids would form a "tornado watch" -- not as a public service. We just thought it would be cool to see one in action. (Probably not....)

Can you imagine if a Tornado that big struck while a game was going on?
It'd be just one giant mixing bowl.

I remember that the "Palm Sunday" tornado that hit Indiana in 1965, and how it destroyed nearly everything in its path, and had massive casualties--including 30 dead in our county alone. As a cop I worked about five tornadoes, and was off duty for several more. We had some close calls on our force, but never actually lost a cop--or a person under our care.

Too bad that a lot of politicians and voters from that area will be getting rid of the federal government and it's disaster relief and Nat'l guard and all that socialist crap.
Looks like they may need it.
Hope there was no one in the path of that thing in this clip.

The severity of these storms may well have something to do with climate change....

Two statements back to back which smack of ignorance.

Would have been crazy if the tornado hit the stadium and destroyed it. Recently I found another video that shows more damage and commentary of the damage done in Tuscaloosa.

Tornados are scarier than hurricanes because they come like a theif in the night. Almost no warning.

Who the heck cares if the stadium almost got hit. Nobody lives in the stadium and it was empty.
01:27 AM on 04/29/2011
That stadium is a religious institution to an Alabama football fan. It was also newly expanded last year to hold around 102k people making it one of the largest and finest sporting venues in the country. I've been there many times, it is a special place, and I would have cared quite a bit. I'm having a son soon and I can't wait to take him to his first Alabama football game.

I disagree, though I suppose it might come down to a 50:50 proposition if polled. A hurricane's force is so many times (thousands, if not millions) that of a tornado that you can't hide from it. It's not something that misses one side of the street for the other. You can outrun a tornado in a moving vehicle if it's behind you and you've got a clear path. Get caught in the middle of a hurricane and you're outrunning nothing. While the 175-250mph winds of a typical twister are impressive, 145mph spread out over 40 miles is insane.

It's rather misleading to say the stadium "survived" the tornado. The tornado didn't touch the stadium. If it had, that place would be rubble.

And the stadium is not a living being. So, having never had "life" (outside of the emotional attachments of players and fans) this stadium is not capable of "surviving." It is merely torn down by the tornado, or missed by the tornado.

Incorrect. One of the definitions of the word includes anything that "remains functional or stable." For example, the program survived budget cuts. The word is not exclusively used for living things.
