Terry Lamar Jones Faces Sex Charges After North Carolina Central University Student Writes Essay

By MEG KINNARD   04/27/11 06:05 PM ET   AP

Terry Jones

-- A former high school band teacher in North Carolina was arrested on sex charges after a young woman wrote in an essay in her college newspaper that he got her pregnant – and took her to get an abortion – when she was his student.

The essay, "I had an affair with my high school teacher," used some fake names but identified the Winston-Salem school, and the principal there tipped off authorities. It was originally written for a composition class at North Carolina Central University and appeared in the campus paper this month as part of an annual special section.

The piece, which describes a relationship that started when the student was 17 and her teacher 24, begins with a chilling description of the abortion.

"The sound of the vacuum still rings in my ears almost three years later," she wrote. "He had taken me to Greensboro because he was scared of someone from school or anyone catching us together at the abortion clinic – didn't want anyone `getting the wrong idea.'"

The teacher, Terry Lamar Jones, now 28, turned himself in on Monday and was charged with 64 felony counts of sex with a student, each one punishable by 15 months in prison. He was jailed on $500,000 bail.

Jones' attorney, David Freedman, said: "People are quick to judge in matters when people are charged, especially when a teacher is accused of having a relationship with a student."

The woman, now a college junior, used her real name in the essay, and it was published along with a photo, but The Associated Press is not identifying her because police consider her a victim of a sex crime.

Repeated attempts to reach her were unsuccessful. She changed the name of her former teacher, as well as that of another student she said had a sexual relationship with him, and all but one reference to her alma mater, Parkland High.

Investigators refused to give details about their investigation, saying only that they spoke with the student last week.

Jones left the Winston-Salem school system in November 2008. Freedman and district officials would not give details about his departure, saying only that he had no demotions or suspensions and submitted a letter of resignation. He had been a band teacher since last year at a middle school in Durham, a position he resigned the day after he turned himself in.

The age of consent in North Carolina is 16, but Jones was charged under a law that specifically makes it a crime for a teacher to have sex with a student at the same school. It is a misdemeanor if the teacher is less than four years older than the student, and a felony if the teacher is four or more years older.

There was no indication in the essay that the woman wanted to see her former teacher arrested or otherwise punished.

The essay, published April 13, created a sensation on campus, with students clamoring for copies of the paper. A day after it came out, more than half of the 4,000 copies were stolen from receptacles around campus, the paper's faculty adviser said. It is not known who took them.

"A lot of people want to read it, but they can't get ahold of it for themselves," said Ashley Griffin, editor of The Echo. "It's really a pretty big deal over here."

The relationship began in October 2007, the student wrote, when Jones invited her to his home to review band videos on the Internet. She said the two kissed that night, but she left in a big hurry to make curfew.

"It was as if he wanted me as bad as I had him that entire year," the student wrote. "I drove home wide-eyed and full of energy. Who in their right mind would ever believe that I had almost had sex with our band director?"

She said things quickly turned sexual, and the two spent nearly every night together. She said the relationship faltered when she learned that Jones had also been involved with her best friend, but she stayed with him anyway until she graduated in 2008.

"I think I needed the attention," the student wrote. "Today I don't speak to either of them. They are still together."

The student wrote that she still feels guilt about the relationship.

"I am still scarred by the experience. I lost my only friends and abused and embarrassed myself by sleeping with a teacher and having an abortion," she said. "A lot of girls can talk the talk, but we all have to be aware of that guilty walk that comes along with the territory."

To much of this is happening .. I remember a case where the teacher , he's white and was sleeping with a student , she is white .. he met up with her one night and the student told him she was going to tell everyone about their relationship .. He left her for dead , but by the grace of something , she lived .. he's now in prison for the rest of his life .. and then the cases where the female teacher is sleeping with a male students .. one we know of has had two children with her student boyfriend .. and she also has spent time in prison .. Parents really need to stay very involved in their kids school and what they are doing after school .. some of these teachers have no business being teachers .

Personally, I think the man should lose his job for his unethical behavior. Teachers should never a) have students at their houses, b) use their position as a means to have sex. That said, I'm not entirely convinced he should be thrown in jail (even though there's a law that specifically says he should). She was over the age of consent and she willingly participated. Not really a reason to put him in the slammer.

I agree, I don't understand how you can say a 16 year old can give consent but make it crime when they do so.

Why is age 16 ok to consent? It should be 18. Who wants their 16 year old having relations with any no matter what age the adult is ? Stay in school, worry about grades and other fun 16 year old stuff like a first job, prom and driving. This guy needs to be locked away without bail. It wasn't his place to make her get an abortion. If I was her mother I would be ready to pounce him down!

Most people I went to school with were "active" by the time (often before) they were 16. Criminalizing normal behavior won't stop teens from having sex.

Yes active with their own peers of own age. Not with adults. It should still be a crime for a minor under 18 to have sex with an adult.

Classic non-denial denial.
David may be a Freedman, but his client won't be anytime soon.

Jones is a creep, but I don't see the point in tossing him in prison.
This girl knew what she was doing.
BTW, it says "they spent every night together" - WTF were her parents in this?
Anybody believe that the administration didn't know about this?
I don't.  He resigned because they figured out what he was up to and it was all hushed up to "avoid a scandal"
The principal at the Winston Salem high school ought to be fired as well.

Give the man his day in court. He could be guilty...Maybe not.

In any event, sleeping with one of your high school students would be wrong on sooo many levels.

He was 24, she was 17. It really isn't that sick.
09:49 AM on 04/29/2011
Yes it is that sick. Anyone who has ever studied developmental psychology will tell you that she was too young to be involved in a relationship of that magnitude with someone his age and in his position. As a 17 year old she is still egocentric and immatture, that's scientific fact. He is a man, he is not egocentric (or not suppose to be) and therefore should act with his matture mind instead of his you know what. There are many books on the subject and I suggest that you read one.

I just read where psychology made the list of top 20 worthless degrees and you have just offered up some good evidence as to why that is!

wow, the world is changing, so its ok to cornhole hole some dude and marry him, but profs and adult students can't have sex in most states, and in NC its a felony if heterosexuals more than four years older than a 16 yr. old have sex with said 16 yr old, but one year less its only a misdemeanor, of course its almost always guys who get arrested a girls a free pass, so who cares? and of course the same crowd that pushes for these laws, feminists, far left and far right wingers, all know what's best for us, and the same crowd that says get the gov't out of our bedrooms has a whole list of exceptions.

whatever happened to liberty?
11:50 PM on 04/28/2011
I agree that consensual sex between two adults should enjoy the "so who cares?" attitude that you suggest.

However in this case, one person was a legal adult in a position of power while the other was a minor subject to the older one's discretionary power. Most secondary schools operate under the idea of in loco parentis, in which the school through its rules and policies act in place of the parents while the child is at school. If the charges prove to be true, this teacher was not acting as a parent but as a predator.
12:50 AM on 04/29/2011
ok you are on point, as to how we should view this specific event, but this story tell us little other than 'the victim" is an attention seeking drama queen. I suspect the amount of time he faces is not at all proportionate. too many details missing. otoh, the idea that adult students and profs cant bang after class is just such an example of overreach. and the lefty crowd is much to blame for this as is the right. feminists mostly. my ancient ex-cia pol-sci prof drove the feminists profs crazy with his open relationship with a 20 year old student, they would walk holding hands or his arm around her and the feminists were out to get him fired. this guy had nads though and just egged them on. it was funny if not a precursor to feminist inspired laws. the left say men can marry despite widespread and long term prohibitions which are basically universal and then goes against a long tradition going back at least to socrates of profs banging the students and then reverses it all. and like the sheep we are just accept these intrusions.

So you're advocating for student-teacher sex?
Thanks in advance for the clarification.
09:22 PM on 04/28/2011
but if she had gotten pregnant at 15 by another student no problem right. Legally able to consent at 16 but this man is facing years of jail time because she had her orgasms with a 24 year old instead of a 20 year old. Stupid. fire him. bar him from teaching but get the violent offenders and incestuous fathers behind the bars.

We don't have the money in our state to even pay our teachers, so I don't see a point in jailing this dude. He seems like somebody who shouldn't be teaching females.
08:37 PM on 04/28/2011
what a dweeb
08:24 PM on 04/28/2011
Wow! There's a lot of twists and turns in this story!
In my opinion, I don't think it's morally wrong for a 17 year old to sleep with a 24 year old, even if it is a student-teacher relationship. Just because something is against the law doesn't mean it's 100% wrong. I think the girl should have kept that secret to herself. That teacher would have kept his job and not go to jail.
Btw, I'm a bit confused about the "64 felony counts". Does that mean he fornicated with her 64 times or did he have sexual relations with 64 students?
08:36 PM on 04/28/2011
I believe each separate sex act constitutes the felony charge...not 100% certain but I am fairly sure that is what I have heard before.

Since he had relations with more that one student, he was clearly preying on them. He should be held accountable for his actions.

I agree. He should definitely be fired from the school, however, I don't think sending him to jail for life seems right...
