Dozens of tornadoes tore through the South yesterday, killing more than 250 and leaving trails of destruction in six states.

Alabama's state emergency management agency said it had confirmed 162 deaths, while there were 33 in Mississippi, 33 in Tennessee, 13 in Georgia, eight in Virginia and one in Kentucky.

President Barack Obama said he would visit Alabama Friday to view damage and meet with the governor and families devastated by the storms. Obama has already expressed condolences by phone to Gov. Robert Bentley and approved his request for emergency federal assistance.

Officials reported that 36 people had been killed in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the home of The University of Alabama. The town's mayor, Walt Maddox, told al.com that the storm left over 600 injured and about 44,000 homes without power. He called the damage "massive," saying that the tornado destroyed an area 3-4 miles long, and in some places up to a half-mile wide.
