Mel Gibson Stars In 'The Beaver,' But Will Anyone See It? (VIDEO)

Mel Gibson Beaver

From 1996 to 2001, Robert Downey Jr., one of today's most bankable movie stars, was entrenched in an endless cycle of self-destructive drug use and arrests. He was fired from "Ally McBeal" and denied a role in a Woody Allen film. Many wondered if he'd ever bounce back.

At one point, he famously told an L.A. judge, “I have a loaded gun in my mouth and my finger's on the trigger" He continued, "and I like the taste of the gunmetal."

But friends stuck with Downey and helped him back on his feet, ushering him towards his eventual comeback. Among those friends was Mel Gibson, star of the upcoming film, "The Beaver." Gibson and Downey had stayed close after appearing together in the 1990 film, “Air America," and in 2001, after Downey was released from prison, Gibson made plans to direct Downey in a Los Angeles stage production of "Hamlet." When that production fell through, Gibson stepped in yet again, paying for Downey's hefty insurance bond so he could star in his 2003 film, “The Singing Detective.”

Today, the tables have turned. Downey is the "Iron Man" and Gibson is on the hunt for his own comeback. The question is: Can he do it?

A few years after helming the controversial "The Passion of the Christ,” Gibson was slapped with a DUI in 2006 in Malibu -- but not before he launched into an aggravated, anti-Semitic tirade against the arresting officer. Gibson apologized and was put on probation, agreeing to attend self-help classes and meet with Jewish leaders to help find "an appropriate path for healing."

A few years later, however, more hell broke loose. Tapes of Gibson hurling racist slurs at his then girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, reached every last corner of the web. A photo of a battered Grigorieva was submitted to Los Angeles sheriff’s department after she claimed he physically assaulted her. Another tape featured Gibson telling Grigorieva that she “deserved” to be hit as their daughter cried in the background.

Gibson was dropped by his agents; his long-gestating film projects were stalled; and executives wondered if he could ever bounce back. In a recent, candid interview with Deadline, Gibson said that he’s trying to rebuild his family, working with Grigorieva in court to arrange settlements and custody issues with their daughter. “Marriage is marriage,” he said. “Everybody has problems.”

Indeed. But it's hard to deny that Gibson’s problems are excessively destructive, even by celebrity standards. Can moviegoers forgive Gibson’s rap sheet of anti-Semitic and racist rants, domestic abuse and general bigotry? Will they plop down 12 or more bucks to support his quirky indie dramedy about redemption?

Jodie Foster, director and co-star of “The Beaver,” which opens on May 6th in limited release, is wondering the same thing. “Can you put aside the private things that you know about him because they've been exploited on the Internet?” she asked in an interview with NBC. “Can you put that aside when you're watching an artist? I don't know. That's a good question. It's celebrity and all this is different now than it used to be.”

The darkly comedic film follows Gibson’s character -- a depressed CEO who dons a beaver hand puppet so he can better communicate with his wife (played by Foster) and two sons. The film’s trailer depicts a haggard-looking Gibson embracing his new life with the puppet, complete with triumphant, orchestral music and familial embraces. Long delayed due to studio fears, the film was finally set to open in early April, and was then delayed yet again.

“This is one of those projects that was doomed the minute Gibson's ranting tapes were released to the public,” Will Leitch wrote in Yahoo! Movies. He continued, "It's a celebrity culture we live in, one that won't be able to separate Gibson the bad person from Gibson the actor, or even the character with the puppet on his hand."

But that claim may not hold true. The public has managed to separate the bad person from the quality performer countless times (even very, super recently).

Curious, The Huffington Post ventured over to Union Square in Manhattan to ask people whether the knowledge they have about Gibson’s unsettling personal history is enough to keep them away from his new film.

Some of the varying responses are below:

I wouldn't condone Mel Gibson's behaviour for a moment. His drunken racist rants are not unique to drunks....I'm puzzled about his relationship with this Oksana Grigorieva as her behaviour is equally suspect in that whole episode. However, I do like his work. I think he is a good actor...maybe not great..but certainly very good. I appreciate the art. How he deals with his personal life is just that....his personal life. If I thought for a moment that he is truly a racist I wouldn't support him.

My own personal take on "The Beaver" is that the movie will be remembered for something
entirely unrelated to the plot or any themes it deals with.
"The Beaver" will be associated with a prophecy fulfilled and rock lyric interpretation.
Specifically, the theme song of the "The Beaver" will come to be the Rolling Stones'
"Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing in the Shadow".....Why?
Because an obscure background actor makes his film debut standing in the shadow of a
graduation scene....
go ahead and scoff now...I don't blame you
But "The Beaver" will finally be put in its proper perspective.

Does anyone care about a drunk anti semite except the studio who bankrolled The Beaver?

Mel Gibson is an abuser.

Abusers seldom stop being abusive.

Why would I want to put money in his pocket by seeing his stupid movie?

As for Jodie Foster, she lost my respect by supporting and promoting Mel.

If you are being abused by your partner, or know someone who is, call:

I agree with you completely! Well said. I would never pay one red cent for anything crazy Mel is associated with you. It's like sending money for Domestic Abusers R Us. Plus it would turn my stomach. I have to wonder about Jodie...what is she thinking? The woman is supposed to be a genius.

Not going to see this movie. I now turn the channel when any Mel Gibson flick comes on. Do not in any way wish to support this horror of a man and this poor example of humanity.

People love to see someone get it together and make a comeback ala' Downey. But Gibson is different -- he did and said despicable things. He's no longer "likable." He also never had the greatest comedic sense. The boyish good looks have waned. And that new movie looks unbelievable stupid.

The publics memory is short. But my guess is that he's through.

In all seriousness, I can't think of a comeback by a racist, anti-semitic misogynist, but I'd be interested in an example.

He's got quite a list though: alcoholic, anti-semetic, racist, sexist wife-beater? Why would anyone just look the other way after that?

The guy is positively toxic and he gets rewarded with more money because he's an "artist"????
I don't get it, I just don't get it.

Of course people will go see the film. The reviews are excellent and it's a stellar cast. He's an actor. All this hate and adoration that gets spread around actors is nonsensical. You don't know these people or anything about what kind of people they are. Those who think President Obama was born in Kenya and was sent by alien powers to turn America into a marxist state are the kind of people who think Angelina Jolie is a great mother and Mel Gibson is the son of the devil himself.

The only reviews so far are from people that the studio has let see early screenings. Those people almost always give good reviews. From the preview this movie looks just laughable to me. One of the most unintentionally funny movies I've seen come out in a long time.

One need not think Gibson "the son of the devil himself" - you are attempting to ridicule people who've made a educated choice after the man has been damned out of his own mouth. One need only look at his behaviour and read his statements and say, "there's a person I have no wish to enrich" and go see another movie. It's as simple as that. We don't know what kind of a mother Jolie is, but we know what kind of a person Gibson is, because he has told us, in his own words, over and over and over again.

Downey had a DRUG ADDICTION, which can be overcome.

Mel is a bigot and a violent misogynist. His father, Hutton, drummed Antisemitism into his head from a young age. He has SEVERE character flaws that can't be fixed.

People will see it...out of sheer curiosity...maybe not in theatre but on DVD for sure...I like Mel as an actor...if there were microphones and cameras permanently attached to celebs all the time, many would appear as unsavory as this guy...believe me...

he is a good actor, but he knew fame would come with a price, he chose the road, he has made millions i dont feel pity for him outside of a senseless creature like a rabid dog. and i would have more pity for the dog.

Yeah, probably.

I used to work on film crews and did two Gibson films. He struck me as a very nice person both times, and I've felt bad for him with his recent troubles. He obviously has some problems he needs to work through, but perhaps that's his own personal business?

As far as his acting/performing is concerned, I have to imagine he's still excellent, and this film's premise seems clever and dare I say, original? Seems of more interest to me than FF5, no doubt.

(S)Mel needs a puppet to hide his despicable self. He lost me at "Passion OTC". Before that he was just a haircut at best.
