Mitch Daniels To Sign Bill Defunding Planned Parenthood Into Law

Mitch Daniels Planned Parenthood Bill

By DEANNA MARTIN   04/29/11 05:28 PM ET   AP

INDIANAPOLIS -- Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels plans to sign a bill that will restrict abortions and make Indiana the first state to cut off all government funding for Planned Parenthood.

The move is likely to beef up his credentials among social conservatives as he considers a 2012 presidential run.

Daniels said Friday that he's supported the abortion restrictions from the outset and the provision added to defund Planned Parenthood didn't change his mind. Daniels says women's health, family planning and other services will remain available.

The move puts at risk $4 million a year in federal family planning grants likely to be cut off because of the bill. The legislation also would ban would abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy unless there's a substantial threat to the woman's life or health.

That will get him in with the Republican Presidental Committee but how much of the womens vote will it get him.

The Republicans are alienating women with their 'Father Knows Best' brand of Paternalism.
I am sick of these old white men and their protege telling women what is best for them as if they actually know.

Taking the rights away from others so you can dominate them is wrong and if the statistics are true then women make up as much as 50% of the eligible voting population so the Republicans had better beware because if the women of America unite they will vote to take back their right to choose the life they want to live and they will not need their 'Great White Fathers' permission to do so.

It seems that the so called conservatives suggest that we need more freedoms in business, reduced regulations for polluters, financial regulators’, and pay less taxes to what they conclude is a socialist welfare breeding government. But let us remove from the freedoms as many personnel chooses that we can. Lets put in place penalties for the young, the poor and those who have not contributed to their conservative standard of perception. Obviously those who need services like Planned parenthood are with out good jobs and perceived as lazy.

I am impressed that you as a male (I am assuming that because your name is Jerome) is sensitive to the health rights and freedom of choice issues of women. Thank you for caring and sharing. You have been fanned and fav'd.

Thank you once again for your concern for everyones rights and especially for defending the rights of women.

Ah, Mitch is not only cutting contraception services for the poor, he is also capping Medicaid for Nursing Homes. This means that anyone who needs to go into a Nursing Home and has no money, will not be able to. He has already eliminated the Health Care for the Indigent program, that pays for a specific emergency surgery for those who are poor. This is "Death Panels By Default". He is a Sleeper that will eliminate Medicare and Social Security for all Americans and privatize everything he can get his hands on (like privatizing roads and selling them off to foreign companies).

Very astute of you to notice and comment so others in the HP Community can be aware of his stance on these important matters, especially since he is being considered for a possible run for POTUS. We do not need someone talking out of both side of his mouth while endangering and/or reducing the quality of peoples lives. You have been fav'd.

I don't get it. Ol' Mitch is so concerned about the unborn, yet he and his ilk seem just fine with putting children who have actually been born at risk in his State? What a hypocrite! I watched him on FOX this morning, and he's being very coy, and I believe he will run.

Whenever a Republican governor signs a bill that expands the power of State Government and takes away our rights - they always 'grimmace' for the camera.

It's the same 'cookie cutter' expression on all their faces...

with all these cuts that will affect the poor, why dont they just kill us out right instead of so slowly.

Pure, unadulterated stupidity!
Daniels better be moving that money over to welfare and medicaid, because the number of pregnancies are going to skyrocket among the poor, single and young!! Add to that the increase in STD's and incidents cervical cancer, Indiana will spend a hundred times more than they cut from Planned Parenthood!
Of course the right-wing supporters could care less about pre natal care or children AFTER they're born....
Whats next? No more funding for textbooks?

Daniels just screwed his chance with Moderates and Progressives, who do NOT support the banning of poor women's healthcare...LOL.

The problem in Indiana is not Daniels. The problem with Indiana are the voters that put Daniels into office .

As a woman, I'm thinking of changing my name to "Bob" or "Steve". Looks as though that's the only way I'll have any chance of "liberty" and "freedom"!

So much for women's lib.

This generation of young women doesn't seem to be as concerned as my generation was about women's rights. They'll lose those rights if they don't stop taking them for granted.

Another rich old white dude that hasn't seen any action in decades trying to moralize limiting access to family planning.
BTW, Planned Parenthood is not only used by the reviled poor (read darker hued) women, most middle class, white, college women make use of their services, too.

Great idea Mitch Daniels!

Come talk to me in about twenty years after there's been a spike in population among minorities and the poor. With no social programs, no healthcare, no women's care, no public education, (shall I go on?), no safety-net for the poor of any kind - I love to come find you and hear your thoughts on how this utopia is working out!
