Osama Bin Laden Dead: Obama, National Security Team Watched Raid In Real Time

Barack Obama

WASHINGTON -- From halfway around the world, President Barack Obama and his national security team monitored the strike on Osama bin Laden's compound in real time, watching and listening to the firefight that killed the terrorist leader.

Gathered in the White House Situation Room, members of the group held their breath and barely spoke as they waited to see whether a carefully crafted yet extremely risky plan would succeed, said White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan. Obama had been playing golf but returned to the White House for the suspenseful watch Sunday.

Brennan said he would not reveal details "about what types of visuals we had or what type of feeds that were there but it was – it gave us the ability to actually track it on an ongoing basis." Typically, members of the Navy SEAL team that conducted the operation wear helmet cameras that transmit sound and video to their operation centers and that data can be fed live to the White House and Pentagon.

As the SEALs lowered themselves from helicopters into bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, the president and his advisers could only wait.

"It was probably one of the most anxiety-filled periods of time, I think, in the lives of the people who were assembled here yesterday," Brennan told reporters. "The minutes passed like days, and the president was very concerned about the security of our personnel."

There hadn't been unanimity among members of Obama's team about going forward with the plan. The president had plenty of evidence to suggest bin Laden would be found in the compound – as indeed he was – but there was no ironclad certainty he was there.

Then there was the danger. Anything could happen. And indeed, something did. One of the helicopters carrying the SEALs stalled upon arrival in the compound and had to be abandoned. It was a heart-stopping moment.

"Seeing that helicopter in a place and in the condition that it wasn't supposed to be, I think that was one of – at least for me and I know for the other people in the room – was the concern we had that now we're having to go to the contingency plan," said Brennan.

The contingency plan of switching to a different chopper worked. In the end, so did the whole operation, and bin Laden was shot dead. But not before the president's nerves got a serious workout.

"When we finally were informed that those individuals who were able to go in that compound and found an individual that they believed was bin Laden, there was a tremendous sigh of relief," said Brennan. "And the president was relieved once we had our people and those remains off target."

If you cannot defeat an enemy in battle make an assassination list of their leaders.
Thats been U.S. policy thru many Presidents.
We are getting so good at it. Ghadfi is next then the mideast leaders we've been dealing with for
years but don't want truths out of the greed that has lost us our humanity, credibility, etc, etc,
The world did not end with a rapture, but our Empire has and like Nations before us we are now
going downhill fairly rapidly.

Fine, the guy is "hiding" in our friendly Pakistan military village for 6 years, and nobody has a clue? Fishy.. He just must have become a disposable liability for all I can say. Therefore, easy to target, and sadly, even easier to take a political credit for getting him. I do not have a problem to know they disposed of his body in the ocean so swiftly, if it wasn't for they claimed that it was per muslim tradition.. which we learned from the Mullas it was not the case.. all so weird.. was he not easy to capture and go to a trial? Nope, he must have known too much, anybody remembers 70ties?

How reliable can Obama be as a witness? He witnessed the attack on Osama bin Laden as it was executed, and now the White House cannot release a consistent story of how the man died. Osama's daughter states her father died on the first floor, and the White House says he was killed in cold blood on the third floor. So many things the White House retracted on since Sunday, even after witnessing the whole incident live.

How about Al Queda confirming the death of Bin Laden. There were other Pakistani witnesses to the raid.

I'd like to know why the HuffPost did not print my comment yesterday. To me it did'nt seem too far out of line, not nearly as much as some of the other comments I saw, and I want an explaination. The Huffington Post as far as I see prints and chooses which ones they like and which ones they don't like according to there left wing interest. I really wish AOL did not buy HuffPost and I'm about ready to cancel my AOL account. This is America, I'm a native American living in California and we have the right to free speech. Plus I do not like Arianna Huffington, to me she's just another Elitist Snob. There's alot more Sex, Violence, Profanity and down right Filfth and Trash in the film industry & on TV but you don't see them censored as much as they should be. I would like someone to respond to me and let me know what it was that was so harsh that it was not printed. Otherwise I will call my Lawyer.

OK, my guess is that he's still dead. We spend two billion a week on these wars. Let's bring our troops home and spend two billion a week here.

Gas prices going up so we can pay to rebuild the middle east and build nice hotels and resorts for oil company executives.

He's dead. Let's get out of spending two billion dollars a week and bring our troops home. We could spend that here.

how weird. if bush was sitting there watching someone getting wacked by bullet through the eye, some woould be screaming bloody cold hearted murdering war monger.

but as it is obama, hey good job, and how was the golf?
12:43 AM on 05/05/2011
exactly, playing golf takes some concentration on it's own.. how can someone golf and not worry about the seals he "supposedly" sent on this risky, as they admit, mission? fine, the bad guy who must have become a "disposable liability" after all, is dead, as he deserves, but I hope all described effort was not just a stolen and well timed event for gaining a political momentum, we still want our jobs back, Mr. Pres.

I'm betting that when the movie comes out, Denzel Washington will play President Obama. I wonder who the Director will be? It'll be a blockuster!
06:46 PM on 05/04/2011
Dig up Gary Coleman, he could play the lead. Just paint a goofy smile on him and do nothing. That's our Pres.
06:52 PM on 05/04/2011
Jaleel White could play the anointed one.

The man murdered thousands of innocent people. Now he is dead and you try to nit pick your way into discrediting the man who gave the order. Again and again Obama has proven his critics wrong and they still try their hardest. Face it. You're wrong and he's the best President since Kennedy. Period. Bush? "The most important thing is for us to find Osama Bin Laden.. It's our number one priority and we will not rest until we find him." George Bush, Sept 13th, 2001. George Bush, March 13th, 2002 "I don't know when he is. I have no idea and I really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority." Now, would you like to see photos of him doing business with the Bin Ladens?

Agency officials said that tracking Mr. bin Laden and his deputies remained a high priority, and that the decision to disband the unit was not a sign that the effort had slackened. Instead, the officials said, it reflects a belief that the agency can better deal with high-level threats by focusing on regional trends rather than on specific organizations or individuals.
"The efforts to find Osama bin Laden are as strong as ever," said Jennifer Millerwise Dyck, a C.I.A. spokeswoman. "This is an agile agency, and the decision was made to ensure greater reach and focus."
An intelligence official who was granted anonymity to discuss classified information said the closing of the bin Laden unit reflected a greater grasp of the organization. "Our understanding of Al Qaeda has greatly evolved from where it was in the late 1990's," the official said, but added, "There are still people who wake up every day with the job of trying to find bin Laden."

We need to demand our $15 Billion dollars back from Pakistan, or have them give us $20 Billion dollars in Oil, plus the $9 billion dollars that was stolen from us, it disappeared some how. We have been deceived without a doubt. Pakistan is the most dangerous Country in the world right now. Nuclear weapons and divided by three leadership groups, with just one Official Leadership that is recognized. Who had the knowledge of Bin Laden's compound, all 3 groups new, to think otherwise, it is absolutely insane. We need to keep our relations with Pakistan open of course; but no more Money/aid!!!. If we were to become enemy's with Pakistan, it would shift the pecking order of all the powers in the Middle East. We need Asif Ali Zardari, his life is on the line, he has no choice; but to play ball on all sides of the fence, that we are sure of. We absolutely must, stop financing them, that would be insane at this point to continue. If Asif Ali Zardari had his way, he would want to lead Pakistan alone and be rid of the thugs, the other two groups who would kill him in a heart beat, without his cooperation and our MONEY. Bin Laden's compound, was most likely built with US dollars. For all we know, we may have paid for the 911 attacks on our own Country.

Clinton and Bush both tried and failed to get Bin Laden. In fact, In 2007, Bush stated, I do not know where Bin Laden is. I do not even think about it. (paraphrase. In 2009, Obama wanted to finish what was started and did.

Oh good for the current President, that got the man, and killed our economy.
04:50 PM on 05/03/2011
Not quite sure what you are trying to say and really don't get the connection to "killing our economy." Exactly what is that analytical connection??

The economy crashed under Bush. Republican spin doesn't wash.
