Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) tells the Boston Globe that he is being sent to Afghanistan.
The Republican senator offered few details about his plans to the Bay State-based outlet. A member of the Massachusetts National Guard, Brown declined to indicate whether his impending departure is the result of a formal deployment. He signaled that he would issue a statement later on with more information regarding the matter.
"I’m going to be going over at some point to do some missions," said Brown to the Globe in a phone interview.
The news comes one day after President Barack Obama announced that Osama bin Laden has been killed.

Osama Bin Laden is dead, President Obama announced Sunday night, in a televised address to the nation. His death was the result of a U.S. operation launched today in Abbottabad, Pakistan, against a compound where bin Laden was believed to be hiding, according to U.S. intelligence. After a firefight, a small team of American forces killed bin Laden and took possession of his body, the president said.
...“Justice has been done,” he said, in comments that marked a formal end of the manhunt for the most visible and emotionally-charged symbol of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The president said U.S. intelligence operatives received a tip in August on bin Laden’s whereabouts, which ultimately led to Sunday’s attack. Obama said he determined last week that the U.S. had enough reliable information to take action; by Sunday morning, he had authorized “a small team of Americans” to conduct an operation targeting bin Laden.
On Monday, Brown released a statement on the monumental news.
“This is a great day for America and our allies across the free world," he said. "Osama Bin Laden has finally gotten the justice he deserved. I commend President Obama, former President Bush and the highly capable men and women in our military and intelligence community whose tireless work over the last decade made this day possible. It is also a time to reflect on the victims of 9/11 and their families, as well as those who have died across the world fighting terrorism. Let this be a lesson that there is no sanctuary in the world for America's enemies.”
UPDATE: Sen. Scott Brown issued the following statement on his annual National Guard duty on Monday:
“As a Lieutenant Colonel in the Massachusetts Army National Guard, I have service obligations that I fulfill each year. Following in the tradition of other lawmakers who have completed their military service requirements overseas, this year I have requested to conduct my annual training in Afghanistan. Doing so will help me to better understand our ongoing mission in that country, and provide me first-hand experience for my duties on the Senate Armed Services, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs committees.”
