Human Breast Milk Cheese Offered At New York Art Gallery

First Posted: 05/03/11 11:26 AM ET Updated: 07/03/11 06:12 AM ET

NEW YORK CITY – A New York gallery on Sunday offered adventurous eaters the opportunity to sample cheese made from human breast milk, getting mixed reviews and some puzzled looks.

The Lady Cheese Shop is a temporary art installation by Miriam Simun, a graduate student at New York University who hopes to use the craft of cheese-making to raise questions about the ethics of modern biotechnologies.

"Cheese is the conversation starter," Simun said. "Some people are loving it, and some people are gagging."

Simun found three nursing women willing to have their milk turned into cheese. She screened the milk for diseases, pasteurized it and learned the basics of cheese-making.

Three varieties were available on Sunday — West Side Funk, Midtown Smoke, described as "creamy and just pure heaven," and Wisconsin Chew, the taste of which apparently reflected the vegetable-filled diet of the woman who provided its milk.

Jocelyn James, of Manhattan, who works with expectant mothers, declared her favorite was Midtown Smoke, which she said was mild. She described Wisconsin Chew as bland.

"It's a lot healthier than cow's milk, which can be very suspicious," she said, although she conceded: "It does have a stigma."

Frances Anderson sampled the cheese while breast-feeding her infant son Luan.

"I'm an adventurous eater," she said. "I know more about the source of this food than going into a supermarket and picking up Cheddar cheese. I don't know what they pumped into that cow."

Passersby seemed perplexed.

"That there's so weird," said Cheryl Coleman, a neighbor walking by. "I love this neighborhood," she added.

Simun said she hoped her cheese will make people think about the various ways human bodies are used as "factories," producing blood, hair, sperm, eggs and organs that can all be harvested to be used by others.

And while the transfusion of human blood is a common practice, uses of human milk raise eyebrows.

Last year, a New York chef served diners at his restaurant cheese made from his wife's milk, and earlier this year an ice cream parlor in London began buying women's breast milk and turning it into frozen treats.

"You're putting it in your mouth," said Simun of human milk and the taboos around it. "There's something really visceral about that."

Do you drink cows milk? I don't see how it would be grosser or more disgusting than that. One comes from a cow and one from a human. It seems that cow would be more disgusting to me. You are only really saying that because it is outside of what you have come to think is normal.

I suppose you refuse blood transfusions too? No french kissing? Sex has got to be out of the question.

Not even remotely the same. French kissing, blood transfusions and sex are not degrading.

This is treating people as if they are the equivalent of animals. As a woman I am insulted to see these "women" acting as if they are no better than dairy cows.

Just because these "women" have volunteered to be treated like dairy cows makes it no less degrading.

No Einstein...I'm saying I'm not the least bit interested in cheese made from human breast milk. Until I read this story it had never occurred to me. Now I'll have nightmares. Thanks HP.

Needless to say, cows’ milk is for calves, and humans have been consuming it for centuries, so how inappropriate can humans’ milk be, for humans?

By that "logic" then beef should be fed only to other cows; meanwhile us humans should be engaging in cannibalism. I mean, we should only be consuming our own, right?

That makes no sense. Milk is produced by the body to be ingested as food by the baby animal. The logic applies to milk only. You can't apply it to something that makes no sense and then claim that it is wrong. Humans discovered that they could drink and process cows milk. They also discovered that it tastes good and that most humans love it. The rest is history.

I guess I just find it kind of insulting that women are being put at the same level as dairy cows.
02:41 PM on 05/04/2011
In some countries cows are considered sacred. In the US we have reduced their sacredness to a commodity, whereby some may think that is an insult. If a woman is getting paid for the milk, I think that is a great way for a mom to generate income if that is what she wants to do. Trust me, no woman is being reduced to a factory farmed animal here.

I'm sure that these 3 women, and those who choose to 'sell their milk' are well-compensated.

I don't care how they feel about it. Apparently money is more important that class or dignity. What I care about, is how it characterizes ALL of us women by association.

It's one thing to provide sustenance to a child who can't feed itself; it's another to do something like this.

We live in a world where women are actually treated as if they are no better than cattle, in many parts of the middle east.

It's ironic that people will be offended by the idea that a woman belongs "in the kitchen" or at home "barefoot and pregnant", but yet these women are letting themselves be "milked" like common farm animals, to the satisfaction of strangers, for money.

These "women" are glorified dairy cows. It's disgusting and degrading to women in general.

Sorry, having a modicum of class, and not feeling I'm the equivalent of a farm animal to be "milked" for the entertainment of strangers does not equal being on a pedestal.
10:26 PM on 05/03/2011
Just give me the milk. From the tap.
10:19 PM on 05/03/2011
Humans are the only mammals which consume milk from other species and after their own infancy. Cultural attitudes towards breast milk range, but the anti-breast milk attitude of the US is an extreme. Historically, many groups have given breast milk to the sick and elderly.

We're also the only animals that plant seeds in particular places and harvest the crops later.

I hope it doesn't come out as cheese...

It involved three lactating women, not a whole herd of women. It's astonishing what people will comment on and/or write about. It's an insignificant amount of cheese that will neither expand nor reduce human suffering, and if any of us come right down to it, there are far more urgent issues on today's plate du jour. I, for one, would like a genetic study showing the infallibility and innate danger of many women drivers. No one's done a complete psychological study as to how many more moving accidents women cause, in proportion to men.

hahahahah. I gota say, my girlfriend drives like an insane person. Fast and not paying attention. I hate to say it, but she really needs to get in a small fender bender so she can realize how dangerous cars are. She will not listen to me whatsoever about driving safer.

What a waste of breast milk that could sustain a human child!

Makes you wonder how much the cheese maker had to pay to get the milk.... ^__^

This is just another outrageous "artsy" event stagged to drawn attention to the artists and the gallery.

(*Yawn*)

"NoMoFearNoMoHate" Let the world know when you enslaved enough women to make your idea commercially viable...

(btw: I gave birth three times and nursed all of my children until they were naturally weaned. I would gladly have donated milk for another infant. However, this exhibit is another step downward in cultural terms.)
