Late Returns: Jon Huntsman Presses Ahead

Huntsman

First Posted: 05/03/11 07:21 PM ET Updated: 07/03/11 06:12 AM ET

Former Utah Governor and U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman has only recently completed his overseas obligations, but as reports from last week suggested, he's pushing ahead on making a possible White House run in 2012.

Per Politico:

Moving swiftly since his return to Washington from Beijing Friday, Huntsman filed paperwork with the Federal Election Committee to begin “H PAC.” In the event he runs, the organization will be the last placeholder before he announces a full-blown campaign.

“This is a paperwork step,” said spokesman Tim Miller. “He’s doing the organizational things required by campaign finance law. When he wants to make an announcement he will make an announcement.”

H PAC is an organization distinct from "Horizon PAC," which launched a few months ago with a website containing some poetry about the future of politics. Huntsman is likely to hold off making his intentions crystal clear until June. In the meantime, he'll stump in South Carolina and New Hampshire while avoiding Iowa and its headlong rush into what looks to be a festival for social conservatives.

In related news, Huntsman's first post-Beijing statement was to praise President Barack Obama for the successful mission in killing Osama bin Laden. Praising Obama is apparently something Huntsman's opponents plan to use against him in the campaign. Already, someone has set up shop at JonHuntsman.com with nothing but a letter Huntsman sent to Obama, in which he refers to him as a "remarkable leader."

It's a particularly sad state of affairs that it would be considered a knock against Huntsman for merely liking or choosing to serve the nation alongside his political opponents, but that's where the base is, I guess. I have a lot of respect for the way Huntsman advisor John Weaver is choosing to deal with this issue (even if typical Beltway pose is to refer to it as "spin").

As a progressive, I like Huntsman. He seems to be genuine, a conservative of the old times, which means a real gentleman, someone with a heart and an intellect, but who happens to strongly and sincerely believe in conservative ideas.

That would be the perfect opponent for Obama in 2012, because in that case the campaign would essentially be about ideology, and imo that would be a VERY good  Read More...

THE MORMON IN RESERVE

For when folks cant stand Slippery Mitty, Huntsman will look better.

I trust NO mormon until the "prophets" get a revelation to come into the 21st Century and stop trying to run the morals of everyone else
--- AND they need to atone for Prop 8 before I would trust any mormon not to do their bidding.
That church operates on conformity and lack of disagreement.

Huntsman campaign is DoA.
he has all the smae problems as Romney.
He's an adult, he's made good policy, he's 'hugged' Demoncrats
he's moderate and he's Mormon.

The Tea Party's going to eat him alive.

I'm calling it here... now... today...

Obama vs Huntsman 2012....

it's something about this guy... I can't put my finger on it ... but I can't deny it...

he is the only "sane" hope for the GOP... and the only guy who puts fear in my 2nd term hopes for Obama.

That was exactly my reaction. If he is cagey enough to weave his way past the fringe that will hold his religion against him your prediction will be spot on. He is the only person on that side that worries me. Good post. Thanks.

Same hear - hard to see how he could win the nomination but if he does he'd be Obama's toughest opponent - I think he'd play well with Independents and even disenchanted Dems who aren't too far left - he's the one Obama does not want to run against - geez, Jimmy Carter even came out and said he's a Huntsman Jr fan, so he has appeal to people across the board (unless you're tea party or extreme right of course- they hate him)

It's not just a fringe who is dubious about mormons.

And being concerned that he would follow the "prophets" is NOT
"holding his religion against him"

A mormon just got dumped from leading our contingent in the 2012 Olympics because he used his position as an athlete to speak publicly on Prop 8
(not to mention that he is one of those "not Gay" mormons)

Huntsman is delusional if he thinks he can beat Pres. Obama in 2012.......He's a Mormon.

Huntsman is delusional if he thinks he can become the Republican nominee. He's Morman, which to Republicans is like saying he's Muslim. They don't consider Morman of being Christian.

This guy reminds me of the person who quit their job because they had a job interview with a company that would pay them more than their previous employer....and then didn't get the job.

Expect the unemployment rolls to swell by 1.

HURRAY FOR HUNTSMAN---AN OLD DEMOCRAT MYSELF ATA 74--ALWAYS VOTE--
I HAVE admired Huntsman for years, and devoutly hoped he would return from the posh
environs of an "Asiatic" ambassador. Now he is home--ready to tell Catholics like myself
that religion is not an issue as JFK proved---a Morman with brains and leadership is welcome
any day. JUST ONE THING NEED BE CLEAR: WHERE is he on Health Care. We must have
health care in this country for our protection against no coverage--=and for the 34 million without--I do not care how or what it gets called, it must be---and Romney must be able to teach a fellow Morman how to get the task done. James McCormick, mere citizen

If Huntsman ran in 2016 as a Democrat, he would have a shot at becoming President. In the Republican party, he will never get through the primary.

In the Republican party he is too far left. If he was a Democrat, he would be far right conservative. Remember, Obama who is a centrist, the Republicans consider far left.
