Taco Bell's Cheesy Double Decker Taco Reviewed

Earlier this year, Taco Bell introduced the Quad Steak Burrito, which was an obvious strategic move to prove to everyone that they did in fact use real beef -- at least in steak form -- amidst the class-action suit which claimed that their seasoned ground beef filling only contained 35% meat. Then Lent came around and Taco Bell introduced the Pacific Shrimp Taco to capitalize on the dogmatic Christian law of meat-abstaining Fridays. But now that Easter has marked the end of Lent, and that meat lawsuit has been withdrawn, the folks at Taco Bell are going back to basics with a "new" menu item which contains their classic, ironclad seasoned beef: the Cheesy Double Decker Taco. Here's how it rates:

The Claims: The Cheesy Double Decker Taco is a soft flour tortilla, filled with beans and nacho cheese sauce, wrapped around crunchy taco shell filled with seasoned beef, cheddar cheese, and shredded lettuce. (350 calories)

The Price: 89 cents. (Prices may vary at participating locations.)

The Verdict: C-. At a glance, this "new" Cheesy Double Decker Taco seems like a déjà vu; didn't they already offer a taco within a taco before? Saturday Night Live has already done a parody commercial about tacos wrapped around other tacos, and then some. Looking at Taco Bell's menu, there is in fact already a "Double Decker Taco," which is "a warm, soft flour tortilla spread with hearty beans and wrapped around a crunchy, corn taco shell filled with seasoned ground beef, crisp shredded lettuce, and real cheddar cheese." When I asked the manager at my local Taco Bell what the difference between the two is, he simply said, "the Cheesy Double Decker Taco has nacho cheese."

If you do a little reading and a little math, you'll come up with the same conclusion: the Cheesy Double Decker Taco is merely the regular Double Decker Taco with an added 30-calorie smear of melted cheese spread in between the corn shell and the flour tortilla. With that said, there's not much to say in terms reviewing a new menu item; it's the same old Taco Bell ingredients, and you'll either love it or hate it, or have some sort of opinion in between depending on your budget, position in food politics, and/or state of inebriation.

Personally I find the food at Taco Bell really bland, which is probably intentional since they have a mainstream customer base with a generally milder palate -- but at least they offer hot sauces in varied degrees of heat. (However, Fire sauce, the hottest of their offerings is still tame for my tastes.) This taco-within-a-taco concept is no exception to this blandness, but it is a mouthful, with all those ingredients packed in each bite. It is quite filling for a taco, however, the extra smear of nacho cheese in this new incarnation of the Double Decker really adds nothing to the Taco Bell eating experience; the refried beans overpowers its taste and texture anyway. Plus there's already shredded cheese on both Double Decker Taco offerings, so it's not like there wasn't cheese to begin with. There's no point arguing this fact though, especially in a lawsuit, since it will probably be withdrawn or counter-sued anyway; the folks at Taco Bell know their customers will go for the novelty of something "new," even if it's really just the same old thing.

It's the same thing Taco Bell always does....try different combinations for the same 5 ingredients. You either like it or hate it. I personally love some TB, so I'm cool with it. The fact that this guy really tried to break down a double decker taco is hilarious.

Taco Bell is disgusting. A decade or two ago it was edible. But like most other fast food chains these days, it really is chemicalized gross "food."

What do you expect from Taco Bell? I go there when I am in the mood and I get what I expect. Taco Bell is O.K. when you consider what you get for the price. I agree that their hot sauce is too tame, so I take it home and use real hot sauce. Taco Bell is to Mexican food what McDonald's is to hamburgers, KFC is to chicken, and Pizza Hut is to Pizza (maybe not the last one, Pizza Hut is just plain terrible), If you want the quality Mexican food, burgers, Chicken, or Pizza, then you don't go to fast food places, its just that simple.

Animal abuse !!!!!

Seriously. Animal abuse. You hated it, it made your tummy upset, yet you fed it to your dog?

Have fun scrubbing the poop-stains out of your carpet. If it made YOU ill, damn, it might do the same to your pet.

You're worse for feeding that to your dog.

I would not trust Taco bell due to fake food fillers. Your fillers maybe foot, guts, head, and so on.

Someone really has to start going after these companies and their fraudulent ads. TB's ad shows a taco that about half filled with meat(?), yet the picture of one unwrapped shows about half that--at best. As far as I'm concerned, it's false advertising and these fast food joints have been getting away with it for ages. You will NEVER, EVER, order and get anything that even remotely resembles what is advertised.

I've found a Taco Bell in my town that always stuffs their items to the max with beans and meat. I love that Taco Bell.

wow... sounds like the reviewer is a real brain giant to figure this out... wtf did he think it was?

I always love these "nothing is hot enough for me" guys. OK, Erik, we get it. You're a real macho guy for whom napalm would be too tame.

What a waste of time this article was.
08:39 AM on 05/04/2011
The "nothing is hot enough for me" talks a big story in a restaurant, however, seeing as about 99% of diners barely tolerate any heat at all, and think Tabasco is used by the drop instead of by the Tablespoon full, after 22 years in the food industry I can tell you you'll never find the searing hot food these people seem to think makes them so macho--well maybe in a Thai place. I like hot. Really hot. But I sure as hell don't go to Taco Bell expecting to find it.
