Eric Cantor's Office Denies Report That GOP Is Dropping Medicare Reform

Eric Cantor Medicare Reform

First Posted: 05/05/11 12:18 AM ET Updated: 07/04/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s (R-Va.) office sharply disputed on Wednesday night a report that GOP leaders are abandoning an attempt to dramatically overhaul Medicare as a part of budget negotiations.

On the eve of bipartisan, bicameral debt and deficit reduction talks with the White House, the Washington Post reported that Republican leadership is ready to give up on House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) plan to gradually turn Medicare into a voucher program.

Not true, said Cantor’s chief spokesman, Brad Dayspring. “Eric made very clear that our position is the Ryan budget which -- as you know -- assumes a debt limit increase and includes Medicare, Medicaid and $715 billion in mandatory savings," Dayspring said. "Whether the Democrats will agree to the proposals we've outlined is yet to be seen, but that is our starting point so we don't continue to kick the can down the road and make real cuts and real reforms this year."

Asked whether that meant Republicans were sticking with Ryan’s version of Medicare reform once talks began at the Blair House with Vice President Joseph Biden on Thursday, Dayspring replied: "The starting point is the Ryan budget, period."

The Post seemed to get the memo, as well. Shortly after the story went up, the title was corrected from “Medicare dropped from GOP budget proposal” to “Republican leaders seeking compromise in deficit talks.” A note was appended to the piece explaining that, “The headline on an earlier alert incorrectly described the GOP position in deficit talks.”

Parts of the story remained, however, including one potentially critical element: that in seeking to lower the deficit, Republican leadership would look first to low-hanging fruit:

That search should start, Cantor said, with a list of GOP proposals that would save $715 billion over the next decade by ending payments to wealthy farmers, limiting lawsuits against doctors, and expanding government auctions of broadcast spectrum to telecommunications companies, among other items.

Democrats said they were encouraged by the move, which could smooth the way to a compromise allowing Congress to raise the legal limit on government borrowing and avoid a national default.

“There’s common ground there,” said Rep. Chris Van Hollen (Md.), the senior Democrat on the House Budget Committee, who is representing House Democrats in the Biden talks.

For Cantor’s critics, the forceful denial of the original Post story may be a plus. In the brief time before the story was corrected, Democratic activists and health care reform proponents had already begun churning out statements demanding that Republicans still be held accountable for voting in favor of Ryan’s budget even if its most controversial provision was dropped.

“Obviously Cantor is scared out of his mind by angry seniors at their town halls, but, there are no backsies in Congress. They already voted to end Medicare,” Eddie Vale, a spokesman for the new pro-reform outlets Know Your Care and Protect Your Care, emailed before the Post toned down its headline.

Such complaints would have lost much of their bite had the provision indeed been abandoned. Now, however, protests over Ryan’s Medicare changes appear likely to continue at full throttle, at least in the early stages of the next round of deficit reduction talks.

Cons also want to create "medical savings accounts" - essentially self insurance that has all of the same limitation of the defined contribution saving model they want instead of Social Security and Defined Benefit pensions.

Social security and Medicare are both INSURANCE programs.  Not savings programs.

Both offer risk pooling, time horizon diversification and economies of scale that  Read More...

Eric Cartmann, if the starting point is Ryan's budget, then we'll never get a deal! The starting point should be middle ground between what your caucus wants and what the other major caucus wants. The starting point should really be about what America wants and needs - like raising taxes, closing tax loopholes, and beefing up tax enforcement! Compromise and bipartisanship are the only way for things to work and I'm sure you know that Eric, having been around the block a few times. But if you take the attitude that Ryan and others have, after all of the criticism they have taken, that only you know what's good for the country, then you might want to start dusting off that resume, because no matter how much cash you can get from Randolph and Mortimer Koch, your constituents aren't going to want you to represent them any longer, even if you came aboard after 9/11! Afterall, the GOP received it's majority because you promised you could deliver the jobs from your buddies on Wall Street. Well Wall Street is having a record profitable year, but where are the jobs? Where are you buddies that fill up your campaign coffers to actually help the economy by getting Americans back to work and buying groceries, and clothes are cars?

I await the day that all of the white people, who vote Republican, will open their eyes and their hearts to the Common Sense that calls out to them. We are all in this thing together. The tide does not only rise for the wealthy and connected. It has to go up for EVERYBODY, or we will surely FAIL. The Ugliness that is Eric Cantor, John Boener,Scott Walker, etal, needs to be confronted and defeated. We have the Leader, Barrack Obama. We need the PEOPLE to stand up to this Paradigm of Greed and Dishonesty to restore the greatness of our country...

Whatever the re-thug plan is.. don't believe ANYTHING Cantor says. He has his eyes on being House Majority leader or Prez. The guy LIES, but he is republican so that isn't saying anything. and he gets re-elected in this super redneck district I live in with not much effort. My 1 lousy vote against him doesn't amount to much... also his office doesn't respond to emails.. I guess his interns see my emails and just hit delete. the guy is in for his own ego alone, doesn't care about people one bit, nada, zero.

I just can't believe how obtuse Ryan and Cantor are. It's just beyond belief, and the rest of the republicans just follow along behind them. Hopefully, the next election will cure that.

For a person who is Jewish Cantor has a great deal in common with the Nazis. Put the State before the people and place a low value on human life.

Technically, he is right I guess, as they said themselves they are dropping it "for now" and will resurrect it in 2012. . .so they are mincing words like Clinton. . .their problem, of course, is they are not going to be around for the most part in 2012 or thereafter. . .as they will be asked about it forever from now on. They will squirm every time, or just plain lie, like they lied to voters in the states in 2010 causing extreme buyers remorse in 3 months.

The Republicans tried to ruin medicare to give more tax cuts to the rich with the Ryan plan
that the Republicans passed in house , but will get stopped in senate. Most people ,
most Democrats & moderates & even over half the republicans , knew it was a bad plan &
complained a lot. Most people need medicare when they retire & this plan would have made
it way too expensive & most would have had to give it up. This big mistake should hurt the
selfish Republicans in politics for awhile. Bush tried to privatize social security , which would
have hurt it a lot , but failed to get it done.

60-65% of the federal budget goes toward entitlements. And that number grows larger. That is an insane amount of money, nearly twice that of all other spending combined, which includes the defense budget. The solution given is to simply get more money, by squeezing it out of the rich, as if they had less right to their money than you do yours. And if they do not gove up more of their money, then they are just being selfish. Theft has become a moral imperative; so long as that person makes more money than you. But you hide behind the idea that wealth is evil, to convince yourself that it s justified. These so called entitlements are not sustainable. The money will run out one day; leaving the bill for someone else to pay without any money to pay it. Sounds a bit selfish.

That's the way Republicans think . They try to help the rich , like the oil companies ,
that are making record profits at our expense & give them tax cuts , while trying to
rob medicare & welfare from people that really need it. We need to vote out the
selfish Republicans that only care about the rich & special interests, like oil.
