Blake Shelton

UPDATE II: Shelton has now formally apologized over Twitter, sending out a series of messages about the incident:

Hey y'all allow me to seriously apologize for the misunderstanding with the whole re-write on the Shania song last night...
It honestly wasn't even meant that way... I now know that their are people out there waiting to jump at everything I say on here or anywhere
But when it comes to gay/lesbian rights or just feelings... I love everybody. So go look for a real villain and leave me out of it!!!
@glaad hey I want my fans and @nbcthevoice fans to know that anti-gay and lesbian violence is unacceptable!!!!! Help me!!!! And DM me...

He sent out a number of other tweets of the same nature; click over to his Twitter to see them all.

UPDATE: Gay-rights advocacy group GLAAD has called on Shelton to apologize for the initial tweet; the organization sent the singer a tweet, saying, "No, @BlakeShelton - violent, anti-gay statements are not what a woman wants. Apologize now. #LGBT #gay #thevoice @NBCTheVoice"
_____

PREVIOUSLY:

For the second time in a month, Blake Shelton has made a comment seemingly derisive of gay men, with his newest remark seeming to advocate homophobia and violence against gays.

The massive country music star, and now judge on NBC's new smash hit singing competition "The Voice," sent out a tweet last night that read:

Re-writing my fav Shania Twain song.. Any man that tries Touching my behind He's gonna be a beaten, bleedin', heaving kind of guy...

Shelton, hearing comments about his perceived homophobia, later tweeted:

"Ba! Ha! Reading all my anti-gay hate tweets.... Ha! Ha! If people only knew even a little about me, my family and friends. Dumb asses..."

Then, he tried to clarify further, tweeting:

“@becchez: Please make it right! I want 2 like u again.” Ha! Ok try this. Its meant to be from a girls point of view.. Thus, "Shania Twain"

Still, it's not the first time Shelton has gotten himself in hot water. Back in April, Shelton made insensitive remarks while presenting at the Country Music Awards in an exchange with co-presenter, Reba McEntire.

Speaking of Taylor Swift, McEntire said, "She writes songs about guys who break up with her, which I don’t understand in the first place. She’s beautiful, she’s talented, she’s sweet. What in the world was Jake Gyllenhaal thinking?”

Shelton's response: “Wait a minute… He was in 'Brokeback Mountain!'”

"Brokeback Mountain," of course, is the film in which Gyllenhaal famously played a gay cowboy alongside Heath Ledger.

I'm not attracted to a lot of men, and I am a hetrosexual woman. I'm not attracted to real white skinned men with white hair..I'm not attracted to black men.. I'm not attracted to red heads. It just doesnt click with those appearances for me. What is wrong with expressing yourself as to what you like and you do not. It probably irks him/Blake to think of a man coming on to him... I would be irked by a woman coming on to me sexually as well. What's the big deal anyway? Why make such a big deal out of sex? Do your thing and move on.

Am I the only one who noticed that he tweets this comment BEFORE an episode airs where he kicks the Gay Mormon off his "The Voice" team (but AFTER it's been filmed)? http://bit.ly/iHLNWq

A hollow apology is worse than no apology at all. As for his role on The Voice how about that look on Blakes face when he saw who he picked when he turned his chair around and saw Tyler Robinson. You could see in his face that he wasn't happy. Did anybody watch the first battle rounds on The Voice? Tyler Robinson was pitted against Patrick Thomas. Funny how both Adam and Christina said that they would have picked Tyler but it was Blakes choice and he really did not seem to struggle with his decision to get rid of the gay man and keep the pretty boy. I like the concept of the show but don't know if I want to keep watching if I feel animosity every time I see Blake's face on the screen.

I knew there was something that made me uncomfortable about Blake Shelton... he looks a little bit like Tom Brady?

So, just to clarify: his points were:

1) He is not homophobic

and

2) He would beat someone to death if they touched his butt

Am I missing anything?

Yeah, and it must have been taped before the tweets because if it was after his manager would have made him pick the other guy just to "prove" he wasn't homophobic.

Saying things that put people down is never ok. Hate needs to stop.

The whole thing has gotten out of proportion, even if he meant it that way, I have gotten groped before. It's not cool when a guy grabs your behind & I am gay. It's a violation of your body. I have punched guys for doing that. It does not make me homophobic, but if Blake does it and he is straight then he is a homophobe. Makes no sense at all, someone touching you or groping you because they think they can is unacceptable & it happens to women all the time. He didn't even mean it that way. But that is irrelevant apparently, he meant it from the POV of Shania Twain or a woman. He has done tweet rewrites of songs before. I am OK with Blake Shelton, I think he is hilarious, never been a country fan and because of GLAAD, I downloaded 3 of his songs. You would think that GLAAD whose "D" stands for Defamation...they would know what real defamation is. They seem like bullies to me...like I said...and I am gay.
05:56 AM on 05/11/2011
You are not gay and you are an id1..0t.

This has nothing to do with anyone touching anyone. The only touching that occurred was in Blake's imagination. Blake apparently thinks and talks about gay sex alot.. He spontaneously made a statement about what he would in an imaginary situation as a way of attacking gays.

His "woman's POV" statement is hilarious. Does that mean he was in dr@g when he made the statement?

I've never heard of this guy before now, but if he's in show business, may his career come to an amazingly instant bust.

He's a sheepphukr.

Should we REALLY expect some enlighten words to come out of the mouths of ANYONE from Ada, Oklahoma?? I think not

My BIL is from Oklahoma; he's one of the most intelligent, liberals I know. My grandmother was from the south--Steprock, Arkansas--and she was a liberal as well. I live in Southern California--in the midst of extreme conservatives, who are not only anti-gay, but racists as well. Can't judge people by their hometowns.

I agree with you 100%.

I ran into some of the ugliest homophobes in San Francisco and some of the most accepting people in bubbaville Maryland. Go figure.

I'll bet I'm madder-as-hell a liberal than you. I expect I'm more liberal than Ted Kennedy was. And I'm from Louisiana and now Oklahoma.
Sure enough, there are some Okies who would fail a junior high civics class and yet proclaim to know just what 'this here guvmint needs'; but there ARE educated, clear-headed liberals in the south.
Blake Shelton? I suspect I'd put him in the group noted formerly in the above paragraph.

Seriously, he's clearly just making a quote and people took it WAY out of proportion, I'm all about equality for you no matter who you like but this witch hunt after anyone who says anything that even maybe slightly MIGHT be considered anti gay is too much. Their are people, not Shelton, who are against gay marriage, they are wrong, no reason for people to attack them while perceiving to be the ones attacked.

So, you can attack someone who's against gay marriage, but you can't attack someone who is for gay marriage? I support gay marriage, but that's quite hypocritical. If youre fighting for equal rights, that gives rights to those that oppose you

Do these G&L groups do anything beside whine day in and day out?

Get a life and quit your infernal whining!

We wish we could get a life, but the republican/so called Christian society treats us like second class citizens. Until everyone is treated equally and can live their lives without fear of being beaten like Matthew Sheppard in Wyoming, then I'll get a life.
