Illinois Wins High-Speed Rail Cash That Florida Turned Down, For Chicago-To-St. Louis Line

High Speed Rail

Republican intransigence over government spending has paid dividends yet again in Illinois, as the state has been awarded a sizable chunk of federal dollars rejected elsewhere.

Earlier this year, Florida's Republican governor Rick Scott turned down more than $2 billion in federal dollars approved for a high-speed line between Tampa and Orlando. Scott was concerned about low ridership and potential cost overruns spilling over to state taxpayers, despite the fact that his state suffers from 12 percent unemployment and the money would have brought thousands of new jobs. State legislators of both parties begged the Department of Transportation to continue funding the project, but without the governor's approval, its fate was sealed.

That left other states salivating at the prospect of a slice of that federal cash. Rhode Island's U.S. Senators quickly fired off a letter to Ray LaHood, the transportation secretary, asking for some of it to come to their state.

And Illinois, which received over $1 billion in stimulus dollars for a Chicago-to-St. Louis line, put in a bid for some of the federal money as well.

On Wednesday afternoon, the state's U.S. senators were informed that it would win $186 million of the Florida dollars for that project, specifically for improvements on the segment between Dwight and Joliet, Illinois, Crain's Chicago Business reports.

"We are committed to quickly turning federal investment in rail into jobs and economic development across the state," Illinois Democratic Governor Pat Quinn said in a statement. "This latest award is another example of our ongoing efforts to lead the nation in development of high-speed rail." Senators Durbin (D) and Kirk (R) also praised the federal grants.

This isn't the first time a newly-elected Republican governor has turned away federal cash for trains, and it helped Illinois in the past as well. Wisconsin's Governor Scott Walker campaigned on a promise of rejecting funds for high-speed rail, and Ohio's John Kasich joined him in that effort as well. No matter: Illinois gladly claimed $42 million of those funds for more high-speed developments.

The $186 million from Florida may just be the beginning. Only $400 million of the $2 billion that state was awarded has been reallocated thus far, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports, and Illinois has other grant applications pending with the DOT, including another $263 million for new rail cars.

California is among the other states also in the hunt for dollars, as it prepares to develop a massive Sacramento-San Diego high-speed corridor that will cost tens if not hundreds of billions.

The Economist Magazine just had an excellent article on infrastructure called "Life In The Slow Lane".

A highlight:  The EU spends nearly twice the GDP on infrastructure as America, and China nearly four times as much.   And since infrastructure has one of the  Read More...

Oh this is delicious! Let's get the study done and start laying track from O'Hare to Downtown to Champaign and on to Springfield and St. Louis. I wanna do Oktoberfest in beautiful St. Louis and then still be back for the evening news here in lovely Chicagoland by the Lake!

A high speed Amtrak line between Union Station and O'Hare should also be added and funded. People from western and central Illinois who want to go to O'Hare could then take the Amtrak trains to Union Station and transfer to the O'Hare exress.

Yep, just like in Shanghai!

City Center Shanghai to Airport: 30.5 km, 7 minutes and 20 seconds.
The Loop to O'Hare: 29.6 km (currently 45 min to an hour - yes!)

If the people in Wisconsin recall Governor Walker next year, the high speed (110 MPH) line between Chicago and Milwaukee can also be funded. This line could be connected with the Chicago-St.Louis line by modifying Union Station to permit through train service so that there could be high speed rail from Milwaukee through Chicago to St. Louis.

Oh, I agree, by showing the infrastructure, I was being snarky, but it's true, ain't it? On Wisconsin... plop!

Com'on kids, let's get the ball rolling for Walker's recall, so that the express trains can run!

Illinois is indeed fortunate to have a Democratic administration with vision instead of the right-wing extrremist Republican governments Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan got stuck with. All those administrations want to do is to redistribute income and wealth upward from working people and the poor to the haves and have mores.

Florida voters have no one to blame but themselves and everyone in Illinois should be grateful. Insanity. I do not know how people voted for an agenda that is so destructive to their home state. All because the politicians were very good at scaring people. That's what you get when you are nothing but sheep.

It takes a thief (Florida's governor) to divert money from Florida to Illinois.

Let the people of their states deal with these governors. If the people of the state wants to sit around and do nothing, they deserve these creeps. If you stand for something, recall these idiots. You got the power. It's in your hands people.

It turns out having Republicans in leadership positions can provide help to some people...people not living under their jurisdictions.

But I got no problem with people who so clearly think slowly moving slowly, so keep giving us your rail money!

Cool.

This must be what the Eisenhower years were like, when states were getting all that highway money.

There is no way a genuinely moderate Republican like Ike could get the nomination to run for Presisent from the current right wing extremist Republican party.

That's a lot of money so 5 people can use it every week.

This is the kind of totally ignorant statement one gets from right wing trolls. There are a lot of peple already using the line between Chicago and St. Louis even before it has been converted to 110 MPH. Once it is high speed the ridership will increase dramatically.
04:57 PM on 05/07/2011
Once it costs more, the ridership will INCREASE?

Okay...

I'm sure what's keeping people away from it now is that extra 15 minutes it will shave off.

If you don't want to be manhandled by TSA ride the high speed train.

HA! They'll be cavity searching you at the bus stop in a few years, at this rate.

Of course, 98% of Americans keep saying they don't mind - so why not!
