Rachel Roy has quickly become one of Michelle Obama's go-to designers, so when we spotted her on the Met Gala red carpet, we wanted to know exactly what it's like to clothe the first lady in her creations.

Roy told HuffPost Style, "I've dressed her 20 times now and so that is such an honor for me, because it means that someone who is so heavily scrutinized feels comfortable and beautiful and strong in my clothing. But I also think that she's making a definite choice when she's picking young, American designers. And I really, thoroughly appreciate that support from her."

Roy explained that FLOTUS first picked her garments off the rack, "which, again, I appreciate, because I think that was very intentional to choose something as the first lady of the United States that my customers could go out and buy. I think it's good for the economy, it's good for me and, you know, as she needed more custom pieces, I got to know her better and know her needs."

The designer attended last weekend's White House Correspondents' Dinner, so we also drilled her on that. She remarked, "It was so much fun. It was hilarious and I was glad to be able to be there. The funniest thing was probably [the] Lion King [video]."

And what about the president's poker face while jokes were flying about Osama bin Laden? "You know what, that man balances like no one else I've ever seen, when it comes to how to balance professional and personal. And you must be such an evolved soul to be able to be that balanced, so I have so much respect for him."

Next up for Roy is a collaboration for Macy's with New York Knicks power forward Amar'e Stoudemire, who escorted Roy to Monday night's event. He told us, "It's been great. We started six months ago, [and the clothes] come out here in September. It's a line that women can wear to sporting events, you know, court-side apparel...very sexy, very sleek."

Stoudemire said he wasn't "nervous at all" about dabbling in the fashion field, but he did look pretty terrified to talk to little ol' us. Roy chimed in, "It's actually a piece of cake for him. Like if I had to enter the basketball world, I would be much more nervous, but he has such a strong point of view when it comes to his vision that it makes it quite easy for me. And when I pick artists to work with -- he's my fourth artist that I've worked with -- I want to work with someone who has a very strong point of view, because I want to offer my costumers something different than what I normally do, so working with someone who knows precisely what they want is actually much easier for me."

Take a look at a handful of photos of Michelle wearing Rachel Roy.

I love this statement by Rachel: And what about the president's poker face while jokes were flying about Osama bin Laden? "You know what, that man balances like no one else I've ever seen, when it comes to how to balance professional and personal. And you must be such an evolved soul to be able to be that balanced, so I have so much respect for him."

The great thing about Michelle Obama's clothes is that she looks like she chose them and she's having a great time wearing them. How many famous women look like that? I can't think of any others that look like they are having as much fun as Mrs. Obama. Many women look gorgeous, but they look like racks for the designers they wear - painstakingly put together. They look like their feet hurt and someone else put their outfits together.

Michelle puts her own stamp on what she wears, and freely mixes up designers.

I don't always like what she choses, but I always love her spirit of adventure and individualism. Michelle is an inspiration for women from all economic backgrounds, and a marketing expert for American designers.

Mrs. Obama looks stunning. So, leave her alone all you nay-sayers.

The FLOTUS absolutely needs to stick with Roy. Wearing Roy's pieces, she looks just stunning. Other times, she has selected awkward pieces that were unflattering. I love it when M.O. looks like a gorgeous and intelligent First Lady.

I wish I had arms, hourglass figure and skin like that. Sadly, I'm a wrinkled fudgesicle.

That's because you don't have a personal trainer appointed by the US government that WE pay for, just saying.

Every First Lady's clothes are heavily scrutinized! Mrs. Reagan was vilified for her use of expensive clothes. Mrs. Kennedy was attacked for using foreign designers. Laura Bush was criticized for dressing too much like a schoolmarm. Mrs. Obama has been similarly criticized for her choices. The fact that she is a younger First Lady who enjoys fun clothes seems to get in the craw of a lot of people and I have no idea why but I suspect her race has a bearing in some quarters. These women do a lot of good in this country and they are along solely because their husband's were elected to office. They are mothers and wives who have a very hard road to hoe trying to juggle all of their duties. They do not need or deserve the criticism they get merely for their fashion choices. I, for one, am delighted our current First Lady dares to take chances with her mode of dress. She's worn designer and she has worn off-the-rack, far less expensive clothes. Good for her!

@BlueZoo:

Fanned and faved. Even though you wrote this comment several weeks ago, it was so intelligent and insightful I just had to fan and fave you. You really do seem like an "independent thinker". Kudos.

Thank you! I guess I am so tired of these deflection issues with regard to our First Ladies. They do so many good things and these are always overlooked or criticized. The MSM would rather concentrate on clothes and it just annoys me no end!

Rachelle's clothes are really nice. I particularly enjoy her use of color, (which works well on The First Lady). What is interesting to me is that the clothes seem wearable for many women, not just the size two crowd. Then of course Mrs.Obama puts them on and they really come alive!

That first dress is a must for me this spring/summer! I love the color, and me and the First Lady are about the same complexion. Thank you Mrs. Obama, for letting darker-skinned women know that its perfectly okay, and in fact quite flattering, for us to wear bright colors.
