Hemp For Your Health: 7 Uses

The Huffington Post   Catherine Pearson   First Posted: 05/06/11 09:25 AM ET   Updated: 07/06/11 06:12 AM ET

Hemp has been generating a lot of buzz recently, and it's not because of marijuana. Hemp food products, which contain no THC, are hailed by many in the mainstream as being good for your health.

Case in point: On a recent episode of "The Doctor Oz Show," the medical celeb (and HuffPost contributor) touted the health benefits of hemp milk, which is made by crushing the seeds of the cannabis plant and mixing them with water. Oz himself singled out hemp as his favorite milk alternative, while Samantha Heller, R.D., spoke about some of its reported benefits. "Hemp milk is a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids, which have been found to be good for both the heart and brain," she said.

In addition to Omega 3, which studies have shown can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, hemp is said to be high in Omega 6 fatty acids, and also contains all of the essential amino acids. Amino acids help form protein in the body and are key to tissue repair as well as overall growth.

Curious about incorporating it into your diet? This week marks the second-annual Hemp History Week, put on by hemp advocates to promote hemp farming and manufacturing in the U.S. Here are some of the categories on the market.

Sesame milk sounds good. I just put some seeds to soak. I'm thinking of trying a combo sesame/hemp drink too...

Hash oil is easily made at home with cheap ingredients (minus the cost of purchasing/growing the buds). It ends up being over 95% THC.

I also like Nutiva the best for shelled organic seed. If one wants to get the most out of the omega-3 in hempseed, coconut oil should be consumed as well. Plant-derived omega-3 has a low conversion efficiency when converting into DHA, an essential component to brain health and one of the main percieved benefits of omega-3 consumption. Coconut oil can double the conversion efficiency of plant-derived omega-3 into DHA. Coconut oil has other benefits such as increased ability to absorb vitamins and it being composed of over 60% MCFAs.

Coconut oil and hempseed together are a superfood of epic proportions. I add them both to almond or cashew butter for a very hearty snack.

Hempseed is a yummy nutty flavor, good enough to eat spoonfuls of raw. Roasted hempseed butter has a very full flavor and I feel brings out the best of hemp's flavor profile. Hempmilk (I prefer hempdrink) can be very earthy if homemade and unsweetened when compared to the sweetened store-bought varieties of almond, rice, or soy 'milk'. Flavors it can be lightly sweetened with best (in my opinion anyway) are raw honey, organic agave, or raw maple syrup. I like it unsweetened and unstrained myself.

Hemp is a great food. Tasty, delicious, and low-environmental impact (if any at all when grown properly). Plus the stalk has an already endless and ever-growing amount

Over the years I've tried numerous brands of hemp seed. The best one so far is the Nutiva brand hulled hemp seed, it is the cleanest and most consistent. You can do a search for Nutiva hemp seed to find a site that sells it.

My cousin in Spain has just learned he has 3 ("garbanzo bean-size" he says) malignant brain tumors. Along with the radiation/chemo treatments he will be going through, he is seriously investigating the use of hemp oil as a treatment. There is some good research indicating the positive effects of hemp oil.

This is just one small link...

Just wanted to point out that what most of the THC/cancer sites refer to as "hemp oil" is a high THC extraction of marijuana, and completely unrelated to "hemp oil" meaning the oil pressed out of hemp seeds.

Thank you zymos. The more I read up on it, the more I realize that high THC is what he's referring to, and I'm sure my cousin is aware of it. Since his biopsy was done, just after Easter, his normally elaborate and verbose emails have shortened to just a few lines. He just can't concentrate or focus right now. Either way, I'm sure he'll be happy to have whatever benefits the hemp oil or THC can bring him. And I will be happy too. ;)

Thanks again for helping me clarify it.
fnf for taking the time to reply. We're all just taking it day by day :D

George Washington was a hemp farmer. In those days rope was often made from hemp fiber. Whether he also grew cannabis is or not, he showed more than passing interest in the medical possibilities of hemp. He and Jefferson traded seeds for planting. Whether they smoked the stuff is the subject of controversy, but strait-laced historians won't go near the subject.

I thought Bill Maher cleared this up....You cannot make milk out of a plant. It comes out of a mammary gland. As cool as hemp milk surely is (which probably isn't very...) it is NOT milk....

sorry to deeply offend... hemp-drink, rice-beverage, liquid -soy lol :) better? I Love hemp seeds but the taste of hemp milk (sorry hemp drink) doesn't do it for my coffee, i prefer homemade sesame seed milk (i mean sesame beverage)...really delish, smooth and creamy... great bioavailable source of calcium - in fact it is what i recommend kids with dairy allergies consume.

super easy to make..... soak cup of raw sesame seeds, add to blender (12 h later) with another cup water,,, blend like crazy... add honey/sweetener if desired... strain.... yum.

thanks for this super easy sesame recipe! I'm going to try it tomorrow!! I've been dying to know alternatives for my coffee. almond milk doesn't do it and all the flavored hemp milks i've found/have access to have calcium phosphate in them.

Eating hemp raw is the best way to retain all the nutrients that are usually lost when foods are cooked.

I've had hemp cereal, and couldn't tell the difference. Tasted a little like flax. Someone else's taste buds may be more advanced than mine, but I liked the cereal.

So can we at last legalize hemp? and marijuana while we are it? There is just no reason to keep them illegal.

I had a bowl of split raw hemp seeds with hemp milk, flaked coconut, blueberries, cocoa and cinnamon for breakfast today. Delish! It kept me going for 5 hours with none of my usual blood sugar crash.
