Chinese Artist Huang Guofu Paints Using Only His Mouth & Feet (VIDEO)

First Posted: 05/07/11 01:59 AM ET Updated: 07/06/11 06:12 AM ET

Huang Guofu didn’t let the childhood accident that left him armless at the age of four interfere with his love for painting. Instead, he taught himself to paint with his feet at the age of 12. He recalls staying up all night at times just to practice. After his father fell ill, Guong, 18 at the time, quit school and decided to pursue painting as a profession in order to help pay for treatments. He started selling his art on the streets where some purchased his work purely out of sympathy.

Guong soon started traveling to different cities to sell his artwork; after hearing that his paintings lacked elegance because of his technique, he taught himself to use the brush with his teeth. Using his mouth allowed him to paint with more detail.

His effort and dedication have not gone unnoticed. As his skills have progressed, so has his recognition. Huang Guofu was recently named vice-curator of the newly opened Chonqing Talents Museum. Now, dealers and art lovers around the world seek out his paintings.

A wonderful story. I grew up in a small midwestern town where a quadriplegic man made greeting card art with a brush in his mouth-very accomplished sketches and quite popular. It's good to be reminded that one needn't be defined by one's limitations, for there are nearly always methods for surmounting them.

With Respect, can any one say eye-mandible co-ordination.

Some comments below have a tinge of bitterness or cynicism, but while many overcome adversities and everyone has something in their life that seems to them as important as people who are radically challenged, it good to celebrate to human will to achieve.

And we must acknowledge it is a community affair when it is at it's best. Rarely does anyone achieve their full potential - with or with out extra challenges - on their own.

We can be dirty rotten scoundrels, but we also thrive in the determination that comes from the human spirit.

And this is news ?

There are thousands of disabled out there that draw, type, eat and use computers, etc with their mouths and feet.

You're missing the point, KAT. This man paints as a master. His work is incredibly detailed, highly mature, and extremely accomplished. Did you even look or listen to the video about him before your generalized comment?

Faved because you see his perserverance. I applaud his faith in God more than his art.

Amazing that so many employers in America write off People with Disabilities every single day. The talents and skills, as well as the variety of abilities and dedication so many of us have, should find employers reaching for us instead.

To overcome this disability with a creative instinct and develop his ability to make good art with parts of our body we normally take for granted is quite a feat (no pun intended).
