COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Likely Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman addressed his connection to President Obama directly on Saturday, in an attempt to head off what will be one of his top two political challenges in the 2012 GOP presidential primary.

Speaking to a commencement ceremony crowd of several thousand at the University of South Carolina, Huntsman cast his decision to serve as U.S. ambassador to China for Obama as a patriotic one, grounded in an attitude of national service.

“Give back. As much as you’re able. Work to keep America great,” Huntsman said. “Serve her, if asked," he added, noting, "I was -- by a president of a different political party.”

“But in the end, while we might not all be of one party, we are all part of one nation, a nation that needs your generational gift of energy and confidence,” he said.

In his first turn on the big state of a potential presidential run, Huntsman highlighted key details of his bio, noting that he and his wife Mary Kaye have seven children, one adopted girl from China and one adopted girl from India.

He also sought to appeal to the youth vote.

Huntsman, who served as governor of Utah for one term and was reelected before taking his ambassadorial post, admitted he had made mistakes, though was not specific about which mistakes he was referring to. To make his point, he quoted musician Ben Folds, from the song "The Luckiest":

"I don't get many things right the first time. In fact, I am told that a lot. Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls brought me here. And I know that I am the luckiest," Huntsman said.

It was one of several such cultural references intended to position Huntsman as a more worldly-wise, sophisticated and even somewhat hip version of the modern conservative.

Huntsman told the students that his “initial passion in life was to be a rock and roll musician” and told the students: “never forget to rock and roll.” And he closed his remarks by speaking three words in Mandarin: “Go, fight, win.” The students finished off the chant they yell at the kickoff of every football game with: “Kick ass!”

Taylor Cain, a USC student and former student body vice president, wrote on her Twitter feed, "I just got to yell 'kick ass' at my commencement. Here's to senior year! Here's to you, Jon Huntsman!"

Huntsman was also very tough in criticizing the state of personal freedoms and civil liberties in China. He described his meeting with a dissident up against “a government with the most formidably security apparatus in the world determined to keep her silent.”

“I know there are many in China who think their time has come, that America's best days are over. And, there are probably some in this country who have lost confidence and think that China is the next best thing,” he said. “But these people aren't seeing things from my earlier vantage point of 10,000 miles away. The way I saw it from overseas, America's passion remains as strong today as ever.”

“We live in the greatest most freedom-loving place on earth,” he said.

Huntsman’s address marked one week to the day after he officially left his ambassadorship. He met with Wall Street donors in New York earlier this week, and he met Friday with South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R). In an interview Friday night Haley said that Huntsman “looks like he’s going to be an impressive candidate if he gets in.”

Huntsman is traveling with a full staff in the Palmetto state, including veteran GOP consultants Jon Weaver, Fred Davis and Lanny Wiles, as well as senior aides Matt David and Tim Miller. He was accompanied to meetings on Friday by longtime South Carolina consultant Richard Quinn.

In addition to the Obama connection, Huntsman will face questions about whether he is conservative enough, given his positions on social issues such as same-sex marriage. Huntsman said in 2009 that he supported civil unions for same-sex couples. He will seek to counter this with a focus on his conservative fiscal record.

thank god some of you were not aroundwhen john kennedy was running and his religious beliefs were brought into question.not all mormons believe in more than 1 wife.thats the slippery slope with same sex marriage.if you must acknowledge same sex marriage its just a matter of time that people with multiple wives will want the same recognition.and then what will be next after that?

Number of marriage partners is a choice, being LBGT is not. For those without a choice marriage is fine.

That being said, I personally see no problems with polyamory or polygamy.

Read Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. He predicted a Morman or Morman influenced run for the White House and more by 2020 or so. They're really scary. Sorry no tolerence here for Morman running my country or any country for that matter.

Same sex Marriage and Multiple wives have nothing to do with each other. If they want to protect "Traditional" marriage....Then stay married. However I'm against The Mormon thingy too.

I don't understand this country. People refuse to vote for a Mormon yet put a Muslim Kenyan into the White House ??!!!
10:33 PM on 05/08/2011
Knew someone would write something stupid like that. Yes, a Muslim over a Morman any day.

and that is exactly how Romney's, Huntsman's, etc.
people will try to sell them.....

or simply referring back to Obama's
somewhat wacky preacher in Chicago....

I was a strong supporter of him, disappointed
by no better attack on corrupt Wall St. than
a Rep would have done, and other mistakes...
but still better than any GOP....

Only a legendary hero can take the throne away from the dark magician who speaks pearly white words. Unfortunately Republican contenders are old, dusty, boring, and far from having the qualities needed for a good president. But somewhere in this land is a young man who is true of heart and strong of mind. He will come forward as king Arthur once did and restore the nation to its former greatness.

I hope this Huntsman would have the decency to resign his job before running against his boss. Hes had time to make all the deals with China to insure they keep the American jobs. Now if it is the case he would not make a good president. You want to see jobs gone to China.....huntsman is your man. Wanta see jobs STAY in China....Huntsman your man

He resigned his post a few weeks ago, which you would have known if you had read the article.

Speaking of which, did you only bother to notice that he was the Ambassador to China and jump to these conclusions yourself, or do you actually have any references for your claims?
05:31 PM on 05/08/2011
What a confidence builder- "I don't get many things right the first time." One can only imagine what he might get wrong as President. But rest assured, he won't get it wrong again. Like, maybe after the first nuclear war, he will have figured it out?

Huntsman is the RINO lite version of Romney, with the endorsement of Obama. The sun will be a cold ember before this happens.
05:06 PM on 05/08/2011
The term RINO has been used so many times to describe Republicans who other Republicans disagree with that its lost the original pejorative meaning.
05:52 PM on 05/08/2011
No it hasn't, RINO is still a perjorative. And it applies to Huntsman.

yes, the god on another planet is pretty weird, and
some of their other idea's, like spending so
much time on their ancestor's, although
that has indirectly helped family research...

There have been ad's on Cincinnati TV selling
the idea that Mormans are just normal Christians,
when that seems far fetched if you study it.
They are looking to get people ready to
vote for Romney or Huntsman.

Republicans have shown their results with their control of government for 6 out of 9 years under Dubya Bush. And THIS was the results:

Closing The Book On The Bush Legacy
So the summary page on the economic experience of average Americans under the past two presidents would look like this:

Under Clinton, the median income increased 14 per cent. Under Bush it declined 4.2 per cent.

Under Clinton the total number of Americans in poverty declined 16.9 per cent; under Bush it increased 26.1 per cent.

Under Clinton the number of children in poverty declined 24.2 per cent; under Bush it increased by 21.4 per cent.

Under Clinton, the number of Americans without health insurance, remained essentially even (down six-tenths of one per cent); under Bush it increased by 20.6 per cent.

Adding Ronald Reagan's record to the comparison fills in the picture from another angle.

They know this information is out there, so their plan to win in 2012? THIS

While Huntsman looks presidential, and his family is known for philantrophy, I can't understand why he is any more electable than my next door neighbor. He was governor of Utah, one of our most conservative and repressive state governments. I can't think much of someone who works for an administration, and then seeks to unseat it. Pick a side. If you want to go after someone, don't up your bona fides by working for the same person you want to take down. Little too much back-stabbing for my taste.

Some may question his leaving to be Ambassador so early into his term of governor (5 months?) and then leaving his position of Ambassador to China (an important position) early on to run for President. It may appear that he is more interested in advancing himself, than the country.

07:10 PM on 05/08/2011
That was his 2nd term. It is not often someone so qualified to be an ambassador to such an important country as China gets asked to fill that position for his country. It is important to put one's country over politics. It used to happen all the time and we were a better country for it. BTW I'm not a republican or a Mormon.

Jon Huntsman and lil' Bob McDonnell find themselves in a twist. They are not ready for prime time to seek the presidency as major GOP candidates, and they will be drowned out in 2016 by all things Marco Rubio. Poor Jeb Bush may want to run (it is his entitlement), but the country won't fall for that again.
