9 Salads (Calorically) Worse Than A Big Mac

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 05/09/11 09:12 AM ET   Updated: 07/08/11 06:12 AM ET

When eating out, we tend to think we’re “being good” by ordering an entrée salad instead of a big, juicy burger. But many of those salads have an undeserved health halo, packing in more calories and saturated fat than the poster food for an unhealthy dinner: The Big Mac.

Still even with bacon bits, tortilla chips and calorie-laden dressings abounding on the salad column of the menu, it’s not a free pass to give into the temptation of a burger (and a side of fries). Salads, with their increased volume and satisfying crunch, have a higher satiety factor than many other foods, meaning that they tend to fill us up quicker and control appetite throughout the day, says Toby Smithson, R.D., community dietitian and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. “It’s fine to choose a salad, just watch what you’re putting in it,” she says. Her tips include:

1. Start with a base of dark, leafy greens, which are packed with vitamins and antioxidants.
2. Choose a salad heavy on plain vegetables. If you omit one of the higher-calorie ingredients, feel free to ask your waiter or waitress to load on more of the vegetables.
3. Be wary of add-ons like bacon, tortilla chips and even beans, which some restaurants prepare with lard (ask your server before ordering). Calorically speaking, regular nuts are better than candied ones and fresh fruit is better than dried.
4. Choose vinaigrettes over creamy dressings, which tend to have more calories and fat. Better yet, order your dressing on the side and do a fork dip: Dip your fork in the dressing before a bite instead of pouring the whole cup out onto your salad. And, “even though olive oil is the better choice, it doesn’t mean that you should have the whole bottle,” Smithson says. Each teaspoon is 45 calories, so use sparingly.
5. Not all fat is created equal. A bit of fat -- from sources such as avocado or plain nuts -- is healthy. So instead of focusing on the total fat content of a salad, look at saturated fat instead.

For a much-needed reality check, we scoured the nutrition facts of nine of America’s favorite chain restaurants (according to this survey from Nation’s Restaurant News) to find the salads that break at least one of these rules:

Disappointed to see one of your favorites on this list? You don’t have to cut it out completely -- Smithson says the key is portion control. If you research ahead of time and know that your favorite salad packs more than 1500 calories, commit to portioning out half of it at the beginning of the meal to take home for later.

What's annoying is that some of these seem like they would be healthy and then they aren't!

I lost 140 lbs. have kept it off for over 25 years. Now I teach others how to succeed, and train other therapists too. The first step is becoming conscious of everything you put in your mouth, never letting one calorie in without knowing it. Your article will help a lot of people to realize what their problem is, even when they think they've been "good". Good job!

Most fast food is terrible nutritionally. Take a look at Taco Bells Salads!

This has really been an education. After reading the post and the 7 pages of comments, I'm (1) very hungry and (2) reminded of why I don't count calories, etc., anymore. I think striving to eat a healthy diet is great, and I know that very few people can be slim or normal-weighted without considerable effort. But after 40 years of dieting and worrying about every morsel of food I put in my mouth (yes, I'm fat, so you can stop reading now...), I decided to just stop. I eat what I want, when I want, and you know what? I eat less than I used to, I eat more fruit and vegetables because I want to, and I've lost weight without thinking about it, because I'm no longer obsessed with food. Yes, good health is important, but the vibe about food on this thread is joyless, frantic. You know you're still going to die, right? As Redd Foxx once said, "All you health freaks are gonna feel pretty foolish layin' up in the hospital dyin' of nothing." Take a nap. Take a pill. Read a book. Do something to calm down. Stress and tension and anxiety will kill you sooner than anything you eat. And not for nothing, I don't think the people who eat those 9 terrible salads do so because they think they're healthy, they eat them because they like them.

When choosing a fast-food restaurant, I prefer Wendy's.  They offer you the option of ordering a half-order of any of their salads.  I prefer the apple-walnut-chicken salad.  Full salads have too much sodium and fat for me.

I know people who constantly eat unhealthy foods, do nothing, and are thin. I also know people who eat healthy foods, exercise, and struggle with losing a pound. If you're not genetically built to be thin, you are going to struggle with weight no matter what you eat and where you eat it.

The Truth Will Prevail.....

The objective is to eat to be healthy. Eating unhealthy foods is not advisable for anyone, thin or heavy. Just because someone is thin does not automatically mean they are healthy.

Actually, genetics only accounts for approximately 6% of the reason some people are overweight or obese. Your theory has been debuked time and time again. Look it up.

No responsible source puts a number like that on it, because it might mean many things. Perhaps 6% of people are obese by genes alone. Perhaps 6% of excess weight is due to genes...do you see the difference? And on any one individual it might vary from 0% genetic contribution to 100% genetic contribution.

I should also like to refer you to research on the FTO gene, which is thought to cause up to 22% of common obesity in the United States.

This article makes me laugh. Salads were never meant to be healthy, or a meal. That's a modern misconception of what a salad is supposed to be. The truth is, all human beings crave 'greens', even if they don't realize it's what they want. If you don't occasionally eat a wad of lettuce or some raw veggies and are constantly "feeling hungry, but I don't know what to eat", then your body wants you to eat something outside of your normal eating habbits. This works visa versa as well, those who only eat 'healthy' foods can become the same way and need to eat some red meat, french fries or a candy bar (one that's made out of actual sugar, not artificial sweetener and cardboard). The point is, we are descended from foragers and even scavengers, which means our diet is supposed to contain a wide variety of foods. Only over that last 60+ years has food become abundant, and there's no guarantee it will last.

I have never eaten in any fast food restaurants. The food is never that healthy (unless you order something and specify NO DRESSING and NO FAT --but forget it). Eat healthy foods, but do NOT sacrifice taste. In other words, it is not necessary to eat rice cakes!

You used the Big Mac in your comparisons but you failed to mention people have an option if they prefer a healthy choice. Mc Donald's Caesar Salad has 90 calories, 4 grams of fat, more with chicken. It goes to show you, people select hi cal- hi fat foods at other restaurants, then bash Mc Donald's for serving them-as if they didn't have a choice!

I opt for the side salad with southwestern dressing, since the southwest dressing has less sodium than any of the other salad dressings offered at McDonald's.

This was really good to know, not that I ever eat Bic Mac. I just don't like burgers, but I am a salad lover, and I am totally taking notes!
