Amtrak, 15 States Get $2 Billion That Florida Lost

Highspeed Rail Funds

By JOAN LOWY   05/ 9/11 08:41 AM ET   AP

WASHINGTON -- Amtrak and rail projects in 15 states are being awarded the $2 billion that Florida lost after the governor canceled plans for high-speed train service, the Department of Transportation said Monday.

The largest share of the money – nearly $800 million – will be used to upgrade train speeds from 135 mph to 160 mph on critical segments of the heavily traveled Northeast corridor, the department said in a statement..

Another $404 million will go to expand high-speed rail service in the Midwest, including newly constructed segments of 110-mph track between Detroit and Chicago that are expected to save passengers 30 minutes in travel time.

Nearly $340 million will go toward state-of-the-art locomotives and rail cars for California and the Midwest. California will also get another $300 million toward trains that will travel up to 220 mph between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

"These projects will put thousands of Americans to work, save hundreds of thousands of hours for American travelers every year, and boost U.S. manufacturing by investing hundreds of millions of dollars in next-generation, American-made locomotives and rail cars," Vice President Joseph Biden said in a statement.

President Barack Obama has sought to make creation a national network of high-speed trains a signature project of his administration. He has said he wants to make fast trains accessible to 80 percent of Americans within 25 years.

The money – initially $2.4 billion – had been awarded to Florida for high-speed trains between Tampa and Orlando. After Gov. Rick Scott canceled the project, the Transportation Department invited other states to bid for the funds. It received 90 applications seeking a total of $10 billion.

Scott said he was concerned that the state government would be locked into years of operating subsidies. However, a report by the state's transportation department forecast the rail line would be profitable. The project initially had been approved by Scott's predecessor, Republican-turned-Independent Charlie Crist.

Two other Republican governors elected in November have canceled high-speed train projects in their states. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker turned down $810 million to build a Madison-to-Milwaukee high-speed line. Ohio Gov. John Kasich rejected $400 million for a project to connect Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus with slower-moving trains. Both the Ohio and Wisconsin projects had been approved by the governors' Democratic predecessors.

Republican members of Congress have also opposed funds for high-speed trains, rescinding $400 million of the money previously awarded Florida as well as other unspent money designated for trains in budget deliberations with the administration.

Don't feel too badly, Georgia now has a Governor that was published as being the most corrupt representative in Washington DC. He left congress to end the investigation and return to Georgia to run for gubna.....AND WON. He failed to disclose a $2M bankruptcy and was said to be insolvent before election day. He like so many other crooks do not know right from wrong. Watch for his plan to reduce the prison population. His son that is a judge in Hall county is already involved with a "non-profit" group that "treats" people charged with drug violations. That particular group is listed as a For-Profit corporation with the Georgia Secretary of State website. Stay tuned because it will hit the fan some day.

I dont get it.

Those who seem most concerned about US security seem little inclined to address its main weakness. Oil dependency.

I take it you saw A Crude Awakening. I saw it last night for the first time. It is a jaw-dropping and factually stunning documentary. Seems like it got the "deep 6" publicity wise like, Inside Job which never got the promotion or attention it should have and was very well hidden as it was released in late October and early November. Inside Job was definitely something that would have not put the masses in a holiday spending mood.
Per A Crude Awakening, I now know why Jimmy Carter was punished and savaged by the Bushs and the press. He was telling the grown-ups exactly what needed to be done.
HE TOLD THE TRUTH.

I saw Robert Kennedy Jr the other night on Tavis Smiley's show. He is amazing. He is as succinct as Bernie Sanders and has as great a passion for what is right and what is wrong as his father. He talked about solar power and the plants we have engaged in making the necessary parts for these plants. He said there is a huge power plant that is being constructed in the Mojave Desert that will have as much output of energy as any coal burning plant.
He also talked about The Last Mountain, a new documentary that is as revealing as INSIDE JOB or A CRUDE AWAKENING were about the banking industry or oil companies.

Judging from the debate - US passenger rail is doomed.

The reason u get lousy bang 4 u buck in defense, is that uneconomic locations for installations can be a source of votes.

HSR = interstate travel =federal thing

HSR = most benefit to most people for least money - not job creation for this state or that

OZ is ~ similar in area 2 lower 48 & we have 7 states & are over governed. The US is like germany b4 bismark.. 48 principalities. Do they charge tolls on the rivers? :)

I know u treasure u constitution, but it badly needs adjusting.

Same here in OZ

My hobby horse is that the portfolio sadly lacking, is a dept of conduits.

All utilities have to have a path to the user - power/gas/cable//water/sewer/rail/road....

How often have u seen the water guys dig up the road & repair it inly to have the gas guys along 2 do the same weeks later?

How easy would coast 2 coast rail have been if a dept had said -we better get some surveyors in there first so we dont sell off land we want back later?

In Europe I hear, they have removable pavements/footpaths. Underneath is a trench u can lay most things in.

Urgently needed dept 200 yrs ago, let alone now.

America is a mess. Why is this a state thing? Dooes Rhode island get its share of funding cos A HSR line cuts accross one of its corners?

Doe CA get $ mainly cos its route is within one state line & there fore simpler.

Also, americas past rampant capitalism comes back to haunt. In the N/E - sections of track have to be bought back from private hands & then revamped..

Countries who rightly treated a national rail network as a natural monopoly & best kept in state hands, have a huge advantage.

Even those which didnt (Europe/japan) had the wisdom to see the light & nationalise the strategic ones when they went broke, rather than subsidise them.

You have the best govt money can buy.

NASA is your Mentor and success bar Amtrak. What they did in 9 years with technology that did not exist is what you should accomplish. The unthinkable. As a government run Corp. you can show people that government is not the problem. This is your chance to shine. Don't start handing out sweetheart deals.
