Howard Dean's Democracy For America Group Launches First Afghanistan Withdrawal Campaign

First Posted: 05/09/11 11:24 AM ET Updated: 07/09/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- The grassroots progressive group Democracy for America (DFA) is launching its first Afghanistan withdrawal campaign on Monday. The move comes just a few weeks after its founder, former Gov. Howard Dean (D-Vt.), announced that he was changing his position and backing the pullout of troops.

Last month, Dean -- who was an outspoken critic of the Iraq War but has defended military action in Afghanistan -- said he has had a change of heart and now believes the war in Afghanistan is not "winnable."

"The Vietnam War showed us we shouldn't prop up corrupt governments, and that's what we've got in Afghanistan," Dean told The Daily Beast.

It was unlikely that the group Dean founded would publicly take a position with which he disagreed. But DFA Communications Director Levana Layendecker told The Huffington Post that the primary impetus for the campaign was actually the death of Osama bin Laden and the group's members calling for a campaign on Afghanistan.

"We've been hearing from people a lot [about opposing the Afghanistan War] in the past year, but then it came to a critical mass after Osama bin Laden being killed," said Layendecker.

The group is backing the Senate's Safe and Responsible Redeployment of United States Combat Forces from Afghanistan Act, which would put Congress' backing behind the withdrawal of American troops beginning on July 1. The bill would also require President Barack Obama to submit a plan to Congress by July 31 for the phased redeployment of U.S. combat forces, including a completion day.

"The president has already committed to some of the things in the bill, but we want to make sure that we're actually making a plan to withdraw because it's time to end the war," said Layendecker.

In an email to DFA members, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), one of the bill's co-sponsors, calls on progressive activists to each sign on as a "citizen co-sponsor" of the measure.

"We are not suggesting our government spell out every stage of U.S. troop redeployment -- specific decisions should be up to commanders on the ground and avoid giving the enemy a potential propaganda tool," writes Gillibrand. "Nor should we change the protection for our troops and flexibility for our mission that has been agreed upon in previous agreements. However, it is critical we provide for a date certain for withdrawal of our combat forces, in order to give certainty to the American people; to ensure maximum flexibility in responding to other contingencies; and to publicly endorse the Afghan Government's assumption of lead responsibility as planned."

A new military study finds that U.S. troops fighting in Afghanistan are experiencing some of the highest psychological stress and lowest morale in five years.

The States will just invade someplace else deemed the big red dog or the big bad wolf. American government needs a reality check in their own back yard.

If Pakistan were encouraged to replace the US in Afghanistan, it would be great for us. We would finally be getting something for our money, from Pakistan.
Also, it would most likely put Pakistan and Taliban at odds. After all, giving Pakistan keys to the kingdom would make Pakistan's mutual endosymbiotic relationship with the Taliban an anachronism. Same for Al Qaeda.
Add that to the fact that such a transition would drive Karzai and what few allies he has left, stark raving mad.
There is a good side to this. Pakistan is a democracy. It seems that they have as much credibility in the field of nation building as we do. We could use foriegn aid to Pakistan to lever some degree of oversight in the process.

It seems only natural to me that the US should invite Pakistan to replace us, in a proxy sort of way, in Afghanistan. If for no other reason than to put some bees in the behinds of the current rulers of Afghanistan.

Whether highlighting the disparity of promises and policy between candidate Obama and President Obama, or calling upon the President to seize the opportunity to become an agent of change by demonstrating leadership on civil rights, or ending the Bush era tax cuts that have cost the U.S. twice the monies spent in both Iraq and Afghanistan; The Deal has advocated for a return to what Gov. Howard Dean referred to as the "Democratic wing of the Democratic Party."

Let us get out and stay out. We are destroying this country. We should not be the policeman of the world and when we do we end up being imperialists. Do we really still need to be in Germany, etc. No, we do not.

maybe we should be patient for a little while. we just got UBL's little black book. maybe while we're in the neighborhood we need to drain the swamp. but we better do it now before the cucarachas find new hiding places.

the klling of bin laden gives us a legitimate (but temporary) window to withdraw in "victory" by saying we got what we came for. If we remain, then it appears to our adversaries that our new goal must be to defeat the insurgents amd build a central government in A-stan. Neither of which is possible. Obama, don't snatch defeat from victory's jaw.

I heard from a close friend of Dean's, he is contemplating another run at the Presidency on the Progressive ticket.
